#11 of 18 B&Bs / Inns in San Agustinillo
Zazil is the Mayan word for ‘light’ and all that the idea of light signifies. On the Pacific coast of Oaxaca, Zazil is a unique retreat nestled under the southern arc of the sunlight reaching across the San Agustinillo Bay from east to west all day long. Zazil Retreats is set in a quiet, relaxed hilltop along the sea awash with gentle breezes, fresh sea air against a thick canopy of trees. Rise to birds chirping and rest at night to the soft sounds waves and crickets. Zazil is a place to harmonize your senses with all the effects of the natural surroundings. Lodge in one of nine large, private, separated rooms with breathtaking panoramic terrace views ocean. Resting behind each room is the Mexican Sierra Madre Mountains. Each room is a Mexican tropical ‘palapa’ structure with typical high ceilings made of tropical hardwoods thickly covered with skillfully woven dried palm leaves.

I am a well-traveled 30 year old lawyer from New York. The host/owner of this property, Christa, is one of the most unhinged people I have ever had the misfortune of meeting. I was scheduled to stay at Zazil Retreat for 4 nights, but left due to serious safety concerns in the middle of the first night. I was surprised to learn after arriving to Zazil Retreat that the property has two attack dogs that roam the property loose at night (this information if not disclosed anywhere online). If you arrive to your room after dark (i.e., after dinner) when the attack dogs are roaming freely, you have to send a WhatsApp message to a security guard who tethers the dogs while you walk to your room, then instructs you not to leave your room until 7am when the dogs are no longer loose. (I have spent several weeks in the San Agustinillo area before, and can attest to the fact that it is generally regarded as a very safe place for travelers, which makes this Orwellian security measure especially bizzare). After a first night out of dinner and drinks in San Agustinillo, I sent a message to the security guard that I was returning to the property. While I had arrived to the property alone and had only listed myself on the reservation, I was returning to the property with another man to spend the night. Unknown to me (Christa did not check me in and I did not study the property's list of rules before leaving for dinner), Zazil Retreat has a strict policy that only guests who are registered at the time of booking are allowed to access the property. (To note, while I had only registered myself as a guest, there would have been difference in price if I had originally listed two persons). Shortly after my unregistered guest and I arrived to my room, Christa - who had been tipped off of by her security guard that another man was with me - arrived to unleash a tirade of verbal assaults and threats that were, simply, harrowing. Unable to explain to me why I would have been permitted to list a second guest on my registration form, but not to add a guest during my stay, Christa told me to "shut my f**king mouth". The ensuing verbal assault over the next twenty minutes included Christa calling my guest and me "disgusting", "pigs", stated she hoped we "would die in a pile of sh*t", and threatening to have her attack dogs unleashed upon us. The incident was so deeply unsettling that my guest, who was helpfully a native Mexican and fluent in Spanish, called the police and kept them on the line until I was able to pack my things for us to leave. Fortunately, this did prevent Christa, her security guard, or the attack dogs from harming us. I am at a loss to explain why my guest and I were made to suffer such horrific treatment by a property manager. I have never experience such treatment before in my life. In the days after my experience at Zazil Retreat, I have come to learn that Christa has a reputation about town as being homophobic, racist, and generally intolerant (which I cannot attest to, but I think is relevant to share to warn other LGBT/minority travelers to this area).

This locations gets two out of five stars. The location, rooms and views are great. For this I would give 5 stars. But the hospitality is zero. The “welcome” from the manger was a really bad first impression. She was somehow busy and came to us saying “Si?”...which gave us the impression of “what are you doing here?” She is really in the wrong place as being the manager who should be professional in hospitality. So said to have such a manager in such a nice location. Beside that: it was not possible to pay with credit card; we have not been informed ahead about that. She did not accept money transfer because of commissions and other reasons. The pool water circulation was not working. So to conclude: very nice room, nice view; host/hospitality: zero.

My husband Francis and I came down, for the first time, to the coast of Oaxaca. We were fortunate enough to stay for 4 nights at Zazil. The place, and the people behind it, are thoughtful, mindful and beautiful. The amazing palapa and traditional coastal architecture, the personal and kind service and welcome, and the proximity to the beautiful beach below were just what we needed. As we told Christa on our way out, we are already thinking about when we can come back.

My wife and I love to travel. During our travels we sometimes happen to find an accommodation that is truly outstanding. We found such a place in a recent trip to the Mexican pacific coast south of Puerto Escondido at San Agustinillo, Oaxaca. Zazil Retreat is an ideal place to rest and relax. The large sparkling infinity pool is a perfect place to spend part of the afternoons. They offer yoga each morning and massage several days a week. The accommodations were exceptional. The most beautiful palapa rooms. The room was large and spotless. The breakfast was either continental or full American. The fresh tropical fruit for breakfast is a treat. The owners, Anton and Christa, make you feel like part of a family. They really want each guest to have a memorable experience. We really did have such an experience and look forward to our next visit.

I highly recommend staying at Zazil. Perched on top of a hill overlooking the ocean, the cabanas are comfortable and tastefully designed. The staff is welcoming and the breakfast is fresh and delicious. The beach is a short walk away (albeit down a steep hill), so it’s possible to go for a walk, swim, or run there in the morning before climbing the hill back up for a shower and breakfast. We came here in March 2019, and there was still construction taking place on some parts of the retreat centre, but that did not take away from our experience. The noise was minimal, and we actually couldn’t hear it from the Orion cabana, which is the farthest one away. We loved hanging out on the terrace of our cabana, soaking in the view and tranquility. In the middle of the day it would get quite hot on the beach and in town; but up on the hill the gentle ocean breeze kept Zazil perfectly comfortable. If you’re looking for a place where your stress will melt away, this is it.

My husband and I stayed at Zazil for 5 nights and thoroughly enjoyed this beautiful hotel and its ocean view. The hotel is situated high up on the hill so you get a panoramic view over San Agustinillo and the ocean for miles in either direction. It's also tucked away in nature, so we didn't experience any noise other than the peaceful sounds of the ocean and natural surroundings. The included breakfast was very fresh - lots of fresh fruit, homemade jams, fresh bread, etc.. The hosts and staff were very warm and made us feel right at home. I could have spent all of our days on our room's balcony staring at the sea. It's an incredibly peaceful and beautiful place. I hope to return!

My partner and I stayed here 5 nights. The hospitality was so warm and the property is out of this world. It is quite high up so the views are stunning. We had a private cabana with four poster beds and mosquito nets, a gorgeous, huge shower with tiles and a bathroom. The front of the room was entirely a screen except for the door, leading on to our own lovely balcony overlooking the ocean and jungle. It was very hard to leave! The owners are delightful and about as multilingual as can be imagined. The staff were also extremely nice. One has the option of meals in a dining area on site en plein air overlooking the ocean. We had breakfast there every morning and it was really terrific- fresh fruit, freshly baked bread and the option of eggs etc. We had dinner there a couple of times and also really enjoyed it. The only thing I would mention is it is at the top of a VERY steep hill. It is walkable if you are in o.k. shape but if not, we understand there are free shuttles available to the beach (or inexpensive taxis). Also payment is cash only (in MXN currency), 50% up front shortly after the time of booking by wire transfer -- this seemed a little unusual to me but all went completely smoothly. All in all, we'd recommend staying here without hesitation. Note that they are pretty new - open for roughly the past 2 years (?) which likely accounts for how few reviews we could find. They were in the process of building a studio and swimming pool during our stay.
