I have stayed one week at Camp Poe during peak season. Overall the experience was positive. The location is nice (very close to the sea), the guest community was very friendly with good vibes. Activities proposed are numerous and the team is dynamic, available and friendly. The pool, jungle set-up amenities are good. Then why only an average rating? I found that the stay, albeit nice, was quite expensive with the sometimes unpleasant experience of being generously milked for my cash. I slept in a basic tent for which I was charged 80$ per night (it had two beds but I booked the tent just for myself). Considering the pricing levels of very good hotels in the area with air-con, great amenities etc, I found the 80$ borderline outrageous, even though I accepted to pay extra for some privacy. The tent itself was pretty basic, its equipment was used and I could barely sleep for a few nights, thanks to the noise of dogs barking all-night long or loud techno music some nights…not to mention the monkeys/animals crawling over the tent which I however accept as being part of the "jungle experience". On the other hand, I was not part of a surf group lesson but rented the equipment directly at the camp. Each one hour rental was charged about $10 which I also considered crazy expensive as it probably costs a few times less in welligama, with no discounts or "free rides" offered despite that I was renting it every day for an entire week. The food is a buffet which was ok but nothing extraordinary. On the way back to the airport, the driver (a local arranged by the camp) tried to make me pay for the highway toll on top of the transfer price already paid at the camp, which I obviously refused. Even though the place has a cool chilled-out vibe, as a single traveller guy, I left with the not so good taste that there was no mercy to charge me anything top dollar.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review, we take on board all of your points and have responded to those which we feel needs some attention. We loved that you enjoyed your stay but are saddened by the negatives, we strive to be the best in our sector in our own subtle friendly way. "I have stayed one week at Camp Poe during peak season. We are not sure what you mean by “milked for my cash.” There are two ways to stay at Camp Poe, you can join us for accommodation only, which still includes breakfast every day and 5 out of 7 evening meals, or as most do, you can join us for accommodation with a package, this is the preferred stay, where you pre-choose the package most suitable for you, be it surf, or surf and yoga, etc. These packages include all your surf lessons, yoga lessons and some other activities like our weekly drum circle and art workshop, so, your days are full of activities with earned down time. If you join us for a package you also get a 10% discount off accommodation. " I slept in a basic tent for which I was charged 80$ per night (it had two beds but I booked the tent just for myself). Our camp is a 2 minute walk from the main road, however really very quiet, but of course the street dogs, monkeys and bird calls can interrupt a peaceful night, the garden is designed like a mini jungle and with that comes jungle animals and well, the street dogs are just a part of Sri Lankan life out here. Our prices reflect all our amenities, location, and the spirit of Camp Poe, so, of course you could have found cheaper alternative hotel accommodation, but that buys you a room, not an experience. But having said that, our tents are ready for a little maintenance, Sri Lanka’s humidity kills fabric, and so, we annually repair and improve our tents, and the Safari Tents are on the top of the list for a little revamp. Added to this, you did come in peak season without a package. If you came in shoulder or low season and booked a package you would have grabbed a way better deal. We also offer returning guests a 10% discount on accommodation so if you were to come back we hope to set the record straight and offer you a price that you are satisfied with. It’s a shame you didn’t take our surf or advanced surf lessons, as then you could have gone surf guiding with our incredible head surf instructor, that way the price would have included all your board hire, and taken you on a really exciting trip around the best surf breaks the south has to offer. We take pride in our equipment, and it’s true that at $10, per half day board hire is more expensive than just taking one from the beach, however, you get to use top quality equipment with boards that are maintained to top standard. Did you speak to anyone about a week rental deal? I am sorry if you did and you were not offered anything, as we normally take it case by case and probably would have offered you a small discount. "Even though the place has a cool chilled-out vibe, as a single traveller guy, I left with the not so good taste that there was no mercy to charge me anything top dollar." We are genuinely saddened that you feel this way, we try our best to host beautiful open fun, and caring people, and our staff love to host and create the cool chilled out vibes. I guess sometimes people are looking for something else, which we cannot be, so, we wish you well and hope your next trip to Sri Lanka brings you all that you wish for.

Myself my best girlfriend and a few other friends of hers arrived at Camp Poe in 2019. We honestly had the best time. The camp was really clean, other travellers were friendly and open to chatting. The food provided was really delicious. We also found a hotel across the road that did great massages and if you had a few drinks by the bar they let you stay by the pool and watch the waves at the beach from poolside. They also did a great crab curry. Highly recommend Camp Poe, I'll be back.

I absolutely loved my stay at Camp Poe! I came as a solo traveler and had the pleasure of connecting and networking with incredible like minded people at the camp! Being in my mid 30s i was conscious of age at camps but this place was absolutely perfect! I was so afraid of the ocean and surfing and by the end of my trip the amazing instructors made me have a surfing obsession! The food is seriously the best i have had in Sri Lanka. I loved everything about my 2 week stay and i most definitely will be back again!

Our 8 day long stay at Camp Poe was the highlight of our trip to Sri Lanka. We were welcomed extremely warmly by everybody and had a wonderful time in the small camp located in the jungle, just 200m away from the beach. The bungalow we stayed in was great, the food (breakfast and dinner) was absolutely delicious and the international community within the camp was very friendly and made us feel like home. We took surf lessons every morning with Tom and Bruno, both of them were great teachers so that we made quick progress. Saying good bye felt really difficult, so we'll definately come back!

It's quite hard to describe Camp Poe as it is quite a unique place. I did lots of research before choosing it, and I liked the sound of the 'vibe' - and it delivered exactly what it promised. The rooms are all spread out amongst the jungle which keeps them cool, shaded and monkeys scramble over the roof, which makes it feel far more connected to nature than a hotel. (Bungalow rooms were really cool during the day even and the mozzie nets at the window were good quality and unripped). The social area is large and airy and a great place to hang out and chat to people either during the day or over dinner which makes the whole experience super friendly and sociable. The food was great and there was always plenty to eat for breakfast and dinner.. The location is also fantastic, just a few minutes walk from the coast, and Ahangama is a lovely little beach unspoilt by large hotels or commercial centres. I was a beginner surfer and the waves at the beach were perfect. My only slight grumble was that our instructor didn't speak very good English and as a newbie I needed all the help I could get; as a result I adopted some poor paddling technique and injured my shoulder. The video coaching feedback was really helpful though and the afternoon yoga sessions were a great way to unwind. During most days my friend & I took a tuk tuk somewhere to explore, there's lots to visit nearby (tea plantation, turtle hatchery, Galle) and different lunch spots to explore and the sunset SUP was a highlight when all the massive bats flew over. I now need another holiday to recover from such a busy week of activities and I'm desperately missing the live-in curry-cooking chefs!
