I would describe this place as expensive for what you get. I found it difficult to sleep due to the lack of black out blinds. Nuga House describes itself as a nature oasis but I found it too cramped for that. The breakfast is average. I noticed they’re providing overpriced yoga lessons. But the thing that made me reduce my stay from 7 nights to 1 night was the unfriendliness of the owner - Avi. I booked my room last minute, and felt he was short on the phone. When I arrived he pretty much ignored me. The next morning when I wanted to enquire about surf lessons (this place does sell itself as surf specialist) the manager sent me to speak to Avi — I had to approach him and his mates and it was just uncomfortable and unfriendly. The place just had this vibe of cliquiness despite selling itself as a zen den and I felt like an outsider. When I said to the owner that I want to check out, instead of showing empathy that I didn’t enjoy my stay he grunted at me ‘this is not how to behave, after I gave you the room for such a price’. The price btw, was the price of a regular for a deluxe, which I had asked for as I was single occupancy - still $50. The bed was uncomfortable and there was nothing deluxe about it. I also took a room that would be empty anyway since I took it at 8pm. I explained to him the reason I am leaving is because I didn’t find him to be a nice host - and he turned around to me and said ‘you’re not a very nice guest’. He then proceeded to ridicule me when I was checking out. I don’t think Avi understands the basic principles of hospitality and I am confused as to why this place has so many good reviews. If you are looking for a nature oasis and good service — I recommend staying at the similarly priced UYANA - which is absolutely outstanding. Now these guys understand hospitality.

Response from Avi Sasson, Owner at The Nuga House

Hi Pippa thanks for your review, we’ll take this into consideration, but before we let this review go we have some comments we would like to add incase anyone were to read your review and think it’s reflective of how we operate. First off, when you initially inquired about the room you asked us for a discount because you have a ‘travel blog’ and would be willing to share the Nuga House on it, which we would have been more than happy to discuss, but when we asked to see the blog you said you haven’t even started it yet. Secondly, if you felt your breakfast was not up to standard, this is something you should communicate with us on the spot so we can offer you something else or find out what was wrong with your food. You also mention our yoga classes being overpriced, this is completely untrue as we offer extremely competitive prices for our drop in classes, on top of that you didn’t attend a single class to know whether it is worth the whole 7$ that it is. After back and forth communication we agreed to give you the room at 50$ for the night, just because that room was not booked for the night doesn’t mean we drop our price for you or anyone. We have price standards that we hold regardless of who occupies the room. Our regular check in time is around 2pm, our staff waited up for you till 11pm to make sure you arrive and were shown to your room, so if they weren’t their warmest after working the day and waiting up for you then we apologise for this. In regards to the surf lesson, when you asked the manager she was busy in the restaurant and directed you to Avi who said he could organise it all for you, but you insisted to get the instructors number and go to meet him yourself instead. We have many good reviews because it is reflective of the services we offer, that is generally how reviews work. We apologise for the experience you had with us and we hope you found the accommodation you were looking for.

The room and facilities were great (also great shower and water pressure!), the pool and the resort were super clean and the staff was nice and helpful. The restaurant is AMAZING! Location is great, walking distance from the rock at Kabalana and quick tuk tuk ride to any surf location until Wiligama. Will definitely come back again and again to this paradise

Loved our stay at the Nuga House. The owners and the staff are so friendly and the service is on point. The rooms are super spacious, clean and lovely with its own little terrace area and the property is super super safe with the most amazing, ever on alert and friendliest ridgebacks - Sunny and Laila. the location is ideal for those who would like to surf and chill by the beach which is less than a 5 minute walk from the property, but also for those who would enjoy a quiet place to relax and unwind when the day ends. The restaurant has reasonably priced, amazing selection of food on the menu and the best Shakshuka I have had- so yum!! We will definitely be going back to this property whenever we are back to Ahangama!

Our stay at The Nuga House was nothing but fantastic! We booked the suite and a double room. They were comfortable, clean and gorgeous. Everything at Nuga House is tastefully decorated. The food was delicious, reasonable and plenty to choose from. They served an excellent cup of coffee. We loved the fact that everyone was cheerful, helpful and very accommodating. The place it self is dog friendly which is always a plus point. The neighbourhood is quiet, but very close to the beach. A special thank you to Neus and Avi who constantly made the place even more special with welcoming us like old friends , with wonderful conversations and their heart warming hospitality. A Yoga shala is available with an instructor (which I could not experience but will for sure since we will be returning), and a beautiful pool is available to cool down after a day of surfing or just after staying by the beach all day. Thank you, and we will surely be back ! Lots of love

Absolutely loved our stay at Nuga House! The property itself may be small but the owners have done an amazing job of giving you every amenity you need. The extremely friendly, helpful staff including Neus and NAME makes sure you have everything you need and prepare some of the best food we’ve had along the south coast. Loved the fact the yoga Shala is built around the Nuga tree, it was amazing to do early morning meditation there before the community woke up. It was a really special place to go for quiet time when downstairs was a bit busy due to popularity. The pool is a perfect place to cool down if you want to chill by your room or stick around the property, it’s a quite social place so we mostly did this :) If you’re looking for surfing or to eat out the location is ideal as it’s not far off the maim Galle/ Ocean Road where you can find local places as well western food, Cafe Ceylon was open when we went out. The one thing we admired the most was the dedication the owners and management had to being sustainable; there was free water refills and no single use plastic on site (straws, bottles or bags). We will definitely be telling our Colombo friends about this place and hope to come back soon! Tip: if you’re in Sri Lanka right now it’s an amazing time to do some staycations, places like this are not only a fraction of the price but have availability which we were told is usually unheard of this time of year, specially for weekdays. Extra bonus if the owner is there, very good sense of humour and you can tell really cares about his guests and staff.
