We stayed here just one night, and although the rooms were basic, we anticipated that. But the rooms were clean, and certainly fine for our needs. We were a little unsure about the buffet meals, as buffet not our favorite style, but the food was good. There is a nice pool, and well planted grounds with many kinds of trees. The reason we were here was to view wildlife in Uda Walawe and we had a superb vist there. In fact, it started to rain late in the afternoon and we almost gave up… but instead, we stuck it out and watching the elephants drinking pooled rainwater—in the pouring rain—was great! Then, it cleared for a while, and the other vehicles were gone, and we had more amazing elephant viewing with no one else around!
Kalu is a charming and wonderful host and gave us a very warm welcome. We felt completely at home from the start. All the staff were so friendly and helpful. They assisted us with safari and excursion bookings, onward transport etc. Kalu’s Hideaway is ideally situated close to the National park where we saw elephants, deer, an abundance of bird life and even a leopard. After a hot day out it was such a treat to return to the oasis of Kalu’s Hideaway. The gardens are incredibly beautiful, full of organic vegetables and fruit trees and so peaceful leading down to the River Walawe. It was so refreshing to take a dip in the lovely pool, watching gorgeous bee-eater birds flitting by. The food was excellent and the wine well chilled! Overall our stay was incredible value for money and extremely enjoyable. We’d love to go back.…
Amazing hotel stunning location .. staff very aware of service but not in your face … food fabulous and excellent massage … gorgeous pool and comfy sun loungers .. very comfortable beds and strong shower .. Shane we only spent one night would definitely return and stay longer
Really lovely stay! The place is great and staff are very helpful. Place is nice, great pool and sunbathing area and good location very convenient for the national park. Food was good, with a buffet one night and set menu the next, same with breakfast. Thank you!
Plus: nice pool and garden, spacious rooms, friendly staff, good set menu breakfast. However too many minus points to make it worth its price. The WiFi is a killer, too bad to work even for basic things (and only 3 of the 14 rooms were occupied at this time). Purely a matter of budget, in this area other hotels manage to deliver far better WiFi by investing more. Room has aging door locks and wiring; had to call in the tech as what looked like a powercut was only my room, and caused by a somehow flipped fuse. Dinner set menu failed mainly by bad communication: as a veggie I suggested the waiter to ask the cook for a good veggie mail. But himself he pushed for the Rice & Curry option leaving out the meat, and my request forleaving out most of the spices was 'yes yes' but nothing at all done. Hence a failed dinner.…
We had a one night stay while we experienced our game drive in Udawalawe National Park. It is a delightful hotel, set in immaculate grounds. The hotel grows much of its own fruit and vegetables, so they are really fresh! The reception and surrounding area are adorned in cricket memorabilia, in tribute to the owner, and makes interesting viewing. Our room was very clean and tidy, not huge but ideal for a short stay. The food was very good, and all the staff we met were friendly and helpful. Would definitely recommend for a stopover if on a visit to the Park.
We were checked in promptly including a ceremony of lamp lighting and shown to our room, which was a good size with a balcony overlooking the gardens. There were several small shady places in the garden to relax and sit. The bed was comfortable . The pool was good to cool down in after the journey. Our main concern was lack of information-there was none in the room about meals etc or pool times. We asked about breakfast time and were told 7am -went down at 7.10 . There was nothing out or ready. We were shown to a table and we just sat and waited while staff slowly put the buffet in place. About 7.35 we were able to serve ourselves and we just found time to eat before we were picked up at 8. It would be so simple to add this information to a sheet given to people on arrival.
Great location, nice friendly staff, buffet food good (but no disposable gloves to use on the spoons handled by all) They have a cold room, which keeps the salads, ice cream, curd etc nicely chilled. What a good idea. Interior space vast and in good condition. Room had a great view across to the large and inviting pool. However the room does need some TLC. There were damp patches on the walls and some mould by the sink, hence only 4 *
We visited this hotel in January 2020. Covid has changed the feel of this accommodation. Last time we stayed in an outside suite in the gardens which was very spacious. This time in a room with an extra bed in the main building, The 'Deluxe' room has a very uncomfortable single bed. Our daughter 27 spent 2 very uncomfortable nights on it. There are no alternatives. No traditional greeting this time with head massage. Also, no masseur either. We were looking forward to a massage after our four hour journey. Covid blamed. Made a booking at our next hotel in Galle. The food is buffet style this time but okay. The chef who had worked in the UK came out to discuss tonights curries. Promised to include our favourites. .Always good to eat local cuisine as other options often disappointing. Promised Hoppers for breakfast wit eggs. Delicious. Staff friendly. and helpful. The grounds are still beautiful and its proximity to the national park and to the elephant transit camp was our main reason for rebooking. The swimming pool has a background of organic vegetable gardens.…
Great location for Ula Walawa safari! Lovely eco hotel with large grounds. Almost all of the fruit and vegetables are grown on site, making for very fresh food. Lots of wildlife around - we saw 3 Malabar pied hornbills fly over the breakfast area! Make sure to bring deet to use at night, there were a lot of mosquitoes. We met the owner Kalu who was very welcoming! Great pool area and my husband also rented a bike for a cycle around the local area.
