The Byoona Amagara Island Retreat is a one-of-a-kind traveler's paradise located on an island peninsula at the heart of the lake. We cater to independent travelers and backpackers looking to get well off the beaten track. We have a gorgeous location overlooking a protected island cove, perfect for swimming, canoeing, hiking or just about anything else you can think of. We also have creative and comfortable lodgings, famously fresh and delicious food, sweeping views of the lake's islands and hills, and a variety of fun and interesting tours and activities... Not to mention some of the most affordable prices in all of East Africa! We also have Internet service available, as well as an amazing library and cinema with hundreds of great books and films. What Byoona Amagara does NOT have is noise, dust, overland trucks, mosquitoes (very few anyway!), or prices that insult your intelligence (or empty your wallet). Come stay in one of our beautiful geodomes and experience Lake Bunyonyi at its very best! Byoona Amagara is a staff-owned, not-for-profit establishment dedicating 100% of proceeds to support education and sustainable community development at Lake Bunyonyi.

shared an eco dome with friends, most incredible night. Spectacular skies. Super quiet place to chill out. We organized a boat trip and had an incredible day exploring the lake and local restaurant/bar. z

We stayed here for four nights in January, 2021. It's a lot colder here than we thought, so bring your warm clothes! The service is excellent. Clinton went out of his way to make sure we had everything we needed (even organising some antibiotics from the mainland for our son who had tonsillitis). We stayed in a geodome which was certainly a novelty having no door! The food was great (particularly the crayfish). Just order in advance for each meal (for example we would order lunch at dinner time). We arrived in wet weather when it was raining, and although the staff were incredible to organise a boat with a roof and help us with our luggage, the wooden steps to our room were very slippery (with moss) and I did slip down on my first night - be very careful! We loved how environmentally friendly the place was - you can refill your water bottles with filtered water (no plastic water bottles are sold), compost toilets and outside showers. Just ask the staff to help you with warm water for the showers (it took us three days to do that and lesson learnt indeed)! Directions were a little confusing from Kibale, but just follow the signs to Lake Bunyonyi and go past Bird's Nest resort.

The arrival to this hotel is truly magical: after unloading your luggage onto the boat and parking the car in the secure car park, you are treated to a ride across the mirror-like lake. We slept in the geodomes and an extra blanket was sufficient for warmth. The views from our geodome from sunrise to sundown were beautiful. The food provided was simple, fresh, perfectly cooked and very tasty: it used food grown locally and they catered very well for my vegetarian and vegan daughters. The swim is invigorating but you will warm up quickly in the warm sunshine. Due to COVID restrictions and the fact that we visited on Christmas eve, there were fewer activities on offer, but we still went for a short (2h) tour of the islands. Throughout our stay, the staff was very helpful, knowledgeable and from the local community. Overall, we LOVED our stay and we would go back again! There was no wifi available at the time and being in the mountains/on a lake, there was limited connectivity to 4G but this did not disturb us.

Amagara really is special. Tranquil atmosphere, delicious food and stunning views over the lake. Staying in one of their thatched geodomes was very cool. The staff were very sweet and welcoming. The manager Jason was immensely helpful when it came to organising a transfer to the Bwindi gorillas and answering various questions. Highly recommend! Beautiful place.

We arrived there late at night and it was raining so the hot water and the lights didn t work. In the morning we discovered a nice view, we could swim in the lake, walk around the resort and have meals. It is about 20 min to reach the island by a small motorboat.
