Pros The staff are excellent despite the dated overly formal service they are told to provide. The location in Port Appin is superb. Cons The hotel's price point is the same as many 5* hotels in central London. Yet it fails to provide the basic amenities required for that standard. It offers very poor value for money leaving the impression of price gouging. Rooms facilities are lacking. No safe. No individual heat control. No air conditioning. No fridge. No tea or coffee making facilities unless requested. Room was poorly maintained and used very out dated technology. Doors were misaligned. Closets were not backed or had any flooring Housekeeping was appalling. Simple standards not maintained e.g. toilet roll not replaced. Towels no choice or information to choose being fresh or retained (always retained). Bed cover bundled into wardrobe unfolded pushing clothes to one side. Alcoholic drinks extraordinarily expensive. 300%+ mark up on wine. Basic spirits and soft drinks more expensive than central London. Food whilst attempting to be fine dining lacking creativity and presentation skills. The dining room itself contained outdated furniture and unimaginative. Whilst I appreciate that these are unusual Covid restricted times and recognise the hotel was making excellent efforts to overcome those challenges. The basic infrastructure together with food and beverage was simply not commensurate with the cost charged. This hotel is a very long way from the standards it ascribes to itself. It is nothing more than a decent 3* or possibly limited 4* accommodation with an at best mediocre dining room. It has the potential to be so much more. I really hope it improves

What a pleasure to be back at The Airds. Fab stay with all covid measures in place. Robert and team do a great job, Cathy, Connor and Norbert go that extra mile, nothing too much trouble. Food fab, nice to still see breakfast tray and whisky mac still in place. Look forward to next visit hopefully very soon.

Thank you for such a lovely review and we are all so pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us so much. It is certainly very challenging times with all the Covid protocols in place to keep guests and staff safe whilst still ensuring that everyone has a good and relaxing break with us. We are extremely lucky in that we have an excellent group of staff with us whose sole aim is to ensure that all guests have a fantastic time with us! We hope to see you back again very soon and once again many thanks for taking the time to write such a great review. With best wishes, Shaun.

We travelled to the Airds following a recommendation from friends. Unfortunately it fell well short of our expectations. We had booked a superior room with loch view at £520 per night for dinner, bed and breakfast. To describe the room as superior flatters it - it was small and unimpressive and should be described as a standard double. The website specifically promised luxury Frette bedding amongst other things. The reality was a very old John Lewis duvet cover with a king size duvet on a super king bed. The duvet itself was old and polyester with no loft. We raised the matter the following morning and Robert, the General Manager, promised to fix the problem. On our return in the evening the situation appeared to be resolved and a complimentary bottle of champagne provided as an apology. However on going to bed later, we found that another king size quilt in a duvet cover made from simply stitching 2 super king sheets together. On raising the matter the following morning, Robert once again promised to solve the problem and on our return later that day things were finally fixed. We also had a problem with the hot water supply to the room which kept failing intermittently. No one was able to resolve this and we were advised that the room would be taken out of service on our departure so that they could fix the problem - not a lot of compensation from our point of view. On the final night, at 10.30 pm, water came from the hot taps but it was initially lukewarm before turning cold. Housekeeping was not good - the bathroom was not cleaned each day and the floor not vacuumed. The weather was cold and windy during our stay - however the heating to the bedrooms did not come on until 5.30 pm in the evening. The food was generally good but the choice limited - a choice of rabbit, sole or a vegetarian option was offered on one evening. There was a conspicuous lack of local produce such as venison on the menu. The Pier House down the road consistently offers local scallops, langoustine and mussels - none of which appeared on the menu during our stay. On the positive side, the individual members of staff were consistently charming and helpful.

Firstly I am sorry that you did not enjoy your stay with us and that we did not meet expectations. These are certainly challenging times for all in hospitality and I cannot promise that we get it right 100% of the time at the moment. However I can assure you that all the staff are doing their best in these difficult times and naturally they were very upset to read your review. We are bound at the moment by strict Covid protocols and as such are not able o provide the full range of services that we want to provide and were doing pre-covid. There are however a small number of inaccuracies in your review. Firstly all our beds in the superior rooms are 6 foot beds and all have super king size duvets on which are either from John Lewis or the White Company, both of which I think that most people would agree are prestigious companies. I can assure you that we have never stitched 2 super king size sheets together to make a duvet and to be honest I do not actually know how one would do this. Whilst the style of duvet cover may not be to your taste they most certainly are not what you described. In terms of our actual duvets, these are Fogarty which again is a well known make, but we do have anti allergy duvets which are a different make and which may have the appearance 'no loft' as you write. In terms of the hot water again our Assistant Manager, Kelsey, did come up to your room on several occasions in order to check the hot water and each time it seemed to be hot. Our maintenance man did look at it again once you departed and again reported that there did not seem to be any issues with it. There are rare occasions when we have a completely full hotel and everyone is running a bath or shower at exactly the same time that water may temporarily be luke warm, but this has only happened on a very few occasions. The choice menu does change each day so as to give guests a wide range of choice during their stay and we try to be as seasonal as possible. For example we always have venison on the menu during the autumn months as this is when it is at it's best. Again we always have fish on the menu given our fabulous location and also have an amazing seafood tasting menu for those who wish to focus solely on seafood. Thank you for your comments on the staff who as you say are very professional, hard working and try their best to give all guests a relaxing and enjoyable time. I am sorry that you did not enjoy your stay

I always feel slightly apprehensive when I stay in a hotel I’ve wanted to use for a long time in case my expectations aren’t met. Airds exceeded them. A visit to the hotel website gives you confidence that Airds is a quintessential country house hotel. All the boxes are ticked - well appointed rooms (worth splashing out on a suite, especially the 2 with balconies), delicious food with a good wine list, pleasant public areas and nice grounds. But IMO it’s the staff that distinguish a great hotel from a good one. A pandemic really tests their mettle and Airds staff passed with flying colours. My tip - rent one of the hotel’s bikes and take the charming ferry to Lismore across the water. All in all a hotel that lifts the spirits - and we all need that right now.

We’ve just returned from a great stay in this wonderful hotel. The staff were so welcoming and friendly from the moment we arrived. Despite covid restrictions it was just lovely. Canapés and pre dinner drinks were brought to our room and if we wanted to sit outside in the garden, a fire pit was lit. The early morning tea tray left at our door with freshly baked pastries was a great touch. The food is superb. Beautifully presented and tastes delicious. The lounge was perfect for sitting by the fire and reading with a pot of tea. All in all it was just a lovely place to relax and enjoy being looked after.
