This is a run down state hotel of the worst kind. Noisy (night club in the same building), dirty (smelled of smoke), uncomfortable (plastic sheets under the sheets). Service regular. Really, it is a no-go. Having said that if your only options are state hotels, this might be the most value for money.

Hotel Libre has ample historical significance in the Cuban communist revolution of 1959. Revolutionary forces attacked the hotel's upper floors as Batista's forces were holed up there. That's the best part of the hotel, except for the air conditioned rooms. The rooms are small and aged, the beds are small, and the bathrooms are just functional. The roof top resturant... More

the hotel is in the main square! Of course is a 2 star hotel and you cannot have the service of a 5 star. If you are looking for a 5 star hotel, then find something else. Our room was super clean; towels, shower, bed, everything was clean. The room is old but I can understand that funds might not... More

Yep, I tried to be optimistic because it is Cuba after all and your expectations have to be lowered because of this, but it really is as bad as the reviews say. - no water at all! And I mean at all, like you can't even flush the toilet. - rooms are dingy and the cleanliness is questionable. - terrible... More

Santa Clara is the capital city of Villa Clara province. It bears a strategic position, straddling the main roads of Cuba heading in all directions. A historical event made this city famous and it refers to the last and decisive battle led by legendary guerrilla commander Che Guevara to topple dictator Batista in 1958. The latter explains the epithet given... More

A cheap hotel is a cheap hotel, you can´t expect everything out of it. But, missing water in the toilet for 10 hours, and the consequences this means, make me find another place to stay the night in Santa Clara next time.

It is difficult to describe this hotel within the twin constraints imposed by etiquette and ascii text. I will use bullet points in place of the bullets I wanted to put in my head at 2.30am when attempting to sleep here: *) bearded, officious lady at reception with a small lock box filled with change *) bemused, pot bellied security... It's Cuba so you expect bad plumbing and poor service: but not grime, dirt, dangerous electrics (bathroom light switch within the shower...). Our room was small with a view of the hotel itslelf. So small that the wardrobe was in the bathroom... It's in a really central location on Santa Clara's main square, and the one advantage of it is... More

If you are simply looking for a very basic room in the center of town, the former Santa Clara Hilton may be worth considering. I would not stay here for more than a night or two, however if you are prepared to put up with a tiny, barracks style room and limited amenities, the Santa Clara Libre might just fit... More
