A bit disappointed with this hotel after three days of hiking but we were, after all, in the remote mountain region and were grateful we didn’t have to tent it! The room was tiny and we had to move the bed when we wanted to open the door to the balcony. But there was a welcome swimming pool that we took full advantage of and we had a reasonable meal in the restaurant. Breakfast consisted of a roll, a croissant, jam and coffee which was not really adequate for a group about to walk 16kms!

Terrible!!! In my many years of travelling, I have never had an experience with a proprietor as awful as this one. While on a hiking trip with my wife, we had the misfortune of spending one night in this hotel, which did include breakfast. While the room is a typical low-end 2-star rated hotel room (no amenities, barely clean, and very questionable bedding), our experience at breakfast was beyond appalling. As we entered the restaurant, there was no one to greet us, and as such, we simply found a table and sat down. Not more than 5 minutes later, in a very loud and rude manner, the proprietor yelled at us for sitting down at a table that was too large. It was very embarrassing, and we took it upon ourselves to move. But...there is a very nice silver lining to this story. Many of the breakfast guests (Italian and French hikers) came up to us and apologized for this woman's behavior. They could not understand her problem and were upset that she treated us in this manner. If I can provide any advice to travellers to Evisa, book a room down the street at Hotel Aitone. Our friends stayed there - the rooms were well appointed, clean, and provided a great view of the valley. Moreover, the hotel staff was incredibly helpful, even to those who were not guests of the hotel.

THe Hotel Scopa Rossa is situated at the top (east end) of the village of Evisa, on the road down to Porta. You can see the sea but don't be fooled as it's longer on the windy twisting mountainside road than it looks. Evisa is a great wee place to stay as you can access lovely gorge walks either by foot from the village or by a short drive. The hotel is a simple establishment but what it offers is fine. We had one of the rooms at the back, which are actually separate from the main building and may well be better as they don't overlook the road, although I have to say, the village is pretty quiet. We had our own en suite, and a balcony overlooking the yard between us and the main builiding. You park your car in this yard, and it gives access to the small pool owned by the hotel. Our room was small but clean and fit for purpose. Note: if you want to use wi fi you have to be in the main hotel as it doesn't reach these rooms. Breakfast is a very simple bread/croissant and jam affair with a help yourself coffee machine and fruit juice on the table. We didn't use the restaurant but it looked well used of an evening, always a good sign!

The walls are paper thin and you can hear everything even what is going on downstairs not to mention in the next room and bathroom. No heat even though the temperatures were low. The breakfast was ok and the half pension dinner was like the decoration, lacking taste and there was no choice. The personnel could at least try to smile, not a very pleasant stay.

We spent only one night in this hotel on July 11th 2012 but it was one night too much! When we wake up in the morning we discovered bed bugs in bed and on the wall. We shared our experience with other guests and we were not the only ones with such unwanted guests! Moreover, the beds make noise each time you move. We booked half board and the evening meal was also the worst of our whole stay in Corsica. One conclusion: if you stay in Evisa, do not stay in this hotel!

Our horrendous experience was not so much down to the hotel but the unpleasant and dishonest owners. We arrived and checked in for a one night stay. The young boy who checked us in demanded my passport which, perhaps rather foolishly, I handed over. This incidentally, was the only hotel out of five we stayed at in Corsica to ask for a passport. We were shown to a room which although very small sufficed for our one night stay. As we were settling in a couple of problems came to light. The light in the bathroom did not work and the shower head holder on the wall was broken. We told the young boy who booked us in. He replaced the light bulb but said he was unable to do anything about the shower. I asked if we could be moved to a different room. We were told that the only other free room at the same price also had a faulty shower. I said that if that was the case then we should be put in a room with a shower that we could use but not be charged extra for the privilege! The boy's older brother was summoned and it was agreed that we could have a different room with a working shower at the original price. That was OK....or so we thought! It was when we went to check out after breakfast the next morning that the trouble started. I was presented with an invoice that showed an additional 20 Euros for the room although it had been agreed otherwise. The woman at reception refused to honour what had been agreed. When I presented my Mastercard she said that their card machine was out of order and I would have to pay by cash. Unfortunately I did not have enough cash but she insisted that I would have to pay by cash in Euros before I could have my passport back. Sterling cash, which I had, was refused. I was told that the nearest cash machine was a round trip of about 60 Km over winding roads that would have taken me well over an hour at least. I was not happy with this and demanded my passport back saying that if they were unwilling to accept Sterling then I would send them a cheque later for the amount I was short. I went to reach for my passport at which point I was manhandled by her and a male who appeared. She was shouting abuse at me and threatening to call the police. I had little choice but to try and get some Euros cash in the village. I was very fortunate to be helped out by a charming lady at another hotel in the village (La Chataigneraie) who gave me some Euros on my debit card. This saved me lots of time and inconvenience. Whilst I was trying to raise some cash in the village, I spoke with several people, explaining my predicament. It soon became clear that the family who own the Scopa Rossa are "not very nice people". Several lessons learned for us and needless to say, not something we would want to experience again!
