“Arro Khampa” is a warm hearted greeting in the eastern Tibetan “Kham” dialect. These words pay homage to the ancient tradition of welcoming caravans and travelers along the Ancient Tea Horse Road with a firm invitation to sit down, warm up, and take nourishment and respite from the rigors of travel. It’s English equivalent is “Hey friend, I bid you welcome.”Such greetings underlined the inherent risks and sense of adventure along one of the world’s great trade routes. It expresses the essential need for camaraderie and communion. Arro Khampa Boutique Hotel name is an evocation of the long history of the hotel’s site. Local people in Gyalthang refer to the hotel’s location as the “Nansuodhak” -- the manor house of the Tibetan magistrate of days gone by, who hosted traveling merchants from as far as Lhasa and from the tropical southern border between Yunnan and Burma, supported local scholars and monks, and was a pillar of the community.

Refined hotel with a stunning view of the temple from certain rooms. The staff will greet you with ginger tea and cookies in the beautiful lobby and you can choose from several breakfast option on their menu. The hotel is very quiet and in the best location possible with beautiful and comfortable rooms. The owner is very friendly and made sure we had the best view available to celebrate our wedding anniversary at no extra cost, which we really appreciated.

Wow - his really was a great surprise - stayed for two nights in the extra large top floor room - and everything was just sensational - the quality of the local room decor (think yak rugs, furniture etc), the authentic breakfast and the great fire pit/reading spot/glass of wine moment. Everyone was just so helpful - must return to Shangri-La area.

Beautiful architecture in the lobby. We recommend big room with view to temple. Floor heating system and comfy bed. Breakfast average... Team is welcoming and nice. The location is the best to explore Shangri-La old town.

Had stayed in quite a few "traditional" hotel in China. What makes Arro Khampa so special? Location is super. Right in the old town, plentiful shops and restaurants nearby but very "local", not as commercialize. Building is restored from traditional house which has the antique feel with modern facilities. What touches my heart most is the hospitality from not only one staff but the whole team. One can feel the customer service provided is from the bottom of their hearts - serving their guest wholeheartedly. Willing to go the extra miles to ensure their guests stay is comfortable. And many many more... And oh ... I must not forget to mention about the inhouse pet - 馒头。A cute handsome doggy who is friendly to everyone. Even my mum who is afraid of dogs ❤ him.
