The Tibetan word for compass is "shu deng ku le", meaning comfort, light, abundance, and joy. We hope that The Compass will provide you with a comfortable stay at the lodge, and the services rendered to you will leave you feeling a home away from home. A fire swept through Shangri-la Old Town on January 11, 2014. It burned down the lodge, cafe, shop, and bakery overnight. With the support from friends around the world, The Compass was able to rebuild. The present Compass open on June 6, 2014.

After a long time of travel, I fell in love with the warm atmosphere at the Compass. My girlfriend and I were welcomed and the breakfast we had was phenomenal. Seriously best French toast I’ve ever had! Everyone working is very happy to serve and talk. The decor is simple, artistic and cozy. I love this place and will continue to come back.

I went to Compass with friends, at the end of a week-long trip through Yunnan. Compass provided just what we needed - a casual, comfortable environment, extensive international menu that gave us a break from Yunnan food, and excellent service. De gave us excellent service, was very knowledgeable about Shangri-La, and even recommended another place for us to try local hotpot. It was an enjoyable afternoon sitting in the sun on the upstairs balcony, and we’d definitely also return for the good food and friendly service. Thank you De!

Loved the set up of the cafe and lodge, everything is so cosy and homey. The staff at the cafe are warm and friendly, knowledgeable about their area and have great recommendations about things to do around the area. Would definitely want to come back and visit again!!

Our arrival to Shangri-la saw the first set of snow. While pretty, it was also really cold. Upon stepping into compass, we felt a warmth like no other - definitely one that warm not just our physical body but our soul too. It helps that their staff can converse in both English and Mandarin (bilingual) and they made awesome awesome coffee!

Perfect vibe, the hosts speak English very well and the food is delicious. The onion soup, omelets and French toast were yummy! We spent 2 nights in Shangri-la and visited compass three times. Highly recommended if want a break from Chinese food
