2023 Travelers' Choice Best of the Best
Our lodge is located right in the heart of the extraordinary Torres del Paine National Park in southern Patagonia. The diverse and untouched landscapes of this area led UNESCO to declare it a biosphere reserve. Our Patagonia hotel lodge opened in 1993 on the banks of the Salto Chico waterfall. It affords an excellent view of the unique Paine Massif and two of the three impressive torres, or towers, which give the park its name. The lodge has 49 rooms and a variety of inviting spaces. Situated on a 3-hectare (7.4-Acre) site, the design borrows certain organic forms from the landscape itself, adapting to it with simple elegance. It was designed to create a dialogue with its environment, putting human beings in touch with the sublimity of their surroundings. For travellers, the lodge provides the welcome surprise of comfort in a remote area. Nonetheless, you are not isolated from nature, but rather placed "within" it.

Very happy with the overall experience. It's very hard to operate such a high-quality >5-star hotel experience in the middle of a national park, and Explora way exceeded my expectations. Amazing staff, quality of food/drinks, fun excursions, clean beds/rooms/spaces, I had so much fun and relaxation. Only area I was disappointed on was the value, because I didn't get to see or photograph all the park highlights given those excursions were not available due to high wind forecasts. But the excursions that were available, including a first-time horseback ride, were all enjoyable. Definitely get the signature cocktails drinks at the bar, absolutely top-level mixology going on back there!

Explora should be a must visit for those who love adventure. Trekking Guides are well informed, friendly and speak great English. Especially Daniel who is a wonderful guide and also a great human being. We were able to get vegetarian and Vegan food by talking to Marisol and Manuel the head of Food beforehand. Please do so. Finally the service is excellent and they make you feel at home especially Catalina in the restaurant. A must visit for those with time and wanting to connect with nature, strongly suggest the horseback riding for beginners it is very beautiful.

BE AWARE: this resort has draconian "fines" for changes in reservations even when changing in advance and for periods when they are booked out. I had to reschedule a week's trip due to covid restrictions and tried to change the reservation with three weeks advance notice. I was told I had to pay a 50% "fine" which is many thousands of dollars. It is very difficult and time-consumgin to get to the lodge and I could not get there in time for the previously scheduled date. I would not engage with this resort again...the conditions are unreasonable.

My husband and I spent 4 nights at Explora in Torres del Paine. I had been thinking about taking a trip there for more than 7 years (friends of ours had been and raved about the hotel in particular) and finally pushed through to book it. It's very far south and a challenge to get there - but so so worth it. We loved it and recommend it very highly. The hotel itself is beautiful - sitting in the middle of the National park there are incredible views out of every window - including our bedroom. The interior is warm and yet with a very clean design. The bartenders make fantastic cocktails which matters a lot to those it matters a lot to (aka us) - and it certainly wasn't expected. The guides are wonderful. Friendly and full of information - earnest about what they are doing. The rest of the staff is warm and also friendly. And then the whole place feels very communal - everyone talking about their hikes and where they were before Explora and where they are going after - you walk with different people and by the end of your stay, know 50% or more of the people who are there. It's very special. I loved it - I miss it already.

First, the good: - All rooms have an exceptional view of the mountains. No need to spend more on upgrades unless you need more space. - Explora plans everything. Trail mix, walking sticks, transportation, and coffee/tea during some hikes are all provided. You only need to ensure you have the right clothes, fill your water bottles, and wear sunscreen when appropriate. - The staff are phenomenal. All very friendly and personable in their unique way. I didn’t meet a single employee that I wouldn’t recommend / hire. - The lodge and rooms are beautifully appointed throughout. - The bed is wonderfully soft and comfortable. - Wifi is strong throughout the hotel, but this could be a detractor for some! And some opportunities for the lodge: - Wind in Patagonian summer can be furious and the windows/doors aren’t sealed well. It can be very noisy and I had trouble sleeping at times. Bring earplugs. - Food was good, overall, but … I think 730p is too late for dinner when you have a 6a wake up. Breakfast is far too limited/basic. The daily lunch/dinner menus covered vegetarians, pescatarians, and meat eaters but with only one option for each. I think the menu was limited and a bit repetitive. - The spa is the only area separate from the main building. And it isn’t very close. I didn’t like walking in the cold wind after swimming. - Communication wasn’t always great. It wasn’t always clear how far we had to go, when we should be back, etc. My car to PUQ stopped at a local cafe for breakfast, which was a great surprise, but I wouldn’t have bothered waking up early to eat at Explora if I’d known that plan. And, finally, a few tips not related to the lodge: - Summer weather is crazy. It could be sunny and warm now but windy and sleeting in an hour. You really do have to bring all your layers with you on every hike and change often. Do not bring baseball caps, umbrellas, or ponchos. - The wind can reach sustained hurricane force in some places. You’re as likely to be wind burned as you are sun burned. - It’s remote. Transportation takes a long time. Add some buffer time before/after so you can take full advantage of your visit. PNT is much closer, but does not have daily flights to SCL. - Five nights is the sweet spot to get the best hikes in with some slack for weather/delays. - Stretch :) They have hot tubs, which no one really seemed to use.

Excellent stay! The food was great-there were good choices at all lunches and dinners. Three course meals. Two vegetarian choices at each meal. Wild mushrooms, guanaco and Chilean bass were just a few. Small group tours in am and pm and more extensive all day tours for all different levels. Book that described some of the tours and also rated them by hardness. Beautiful views of the mountains just outside the windows and located on a glacier fed river with rapids making white noise for a deep sleep. Horseback adventures depending on experience. Guides were very knowledgeable and interesting. Once a week they have a BBQ lunch at a property an hour and a half by van away. Twisty dirt roads so beware of carsickness. The building used to be a wool processing factory and they still have the machines as decoration. Altogether an excelllent experience!
