Hotel's Favorite
If you're looking for an all-inclusive package holiday hotel with endless facilities, evening entertainment, kids en-masse and a lively vibe, then do NOT book the Grecotel Filoxemia.
If you're looking for a chilled out beach hotel with a civilised atmosphere, a mainly mature clientele and super friendly staff who go out of their way to hel, you'll be delighted with the Grecotel Filoxemia.
I'm in the second camp and had an extremely enjouable 11 night stay in September 2024.
It had its shortcomings, of course, but the good things far outweighed the not so good things.
The good things include:
* A quiet and exquisite location with buses right outside the hotel that take you to a number of locations, including Kalamata centre for 1.5 Euros.
* Plenty of available sun loungers and umbrellas around the pool and beach and a Towel Guy who'd give you two or three towels if you asked (and sometimes if you didn't)
* Efficient waiting staff in the restaurant. You never had to wait long for a table to be set or a drink to be brought.
* Eager to help reception staff - in my case I arrived four hours before the official check-in time, but I got my room immediately and when I asked for a late check out, I was given an extra 2.5 hours without any charge.
The shortcomings include:
*The one all reviewers mention: the bathroom turning into a wet room every time you shower because there's no protective curtain or door on the bath.
* Some of the food is left to go cold in the serving dishes at both breakfast and dinner.
* The bar staff do not like you going to the beach bar in the day to order your own drinks. And, if you do, they try to send you back to where you were sitting so that a waiter can deliver them to you. The only problem with that is, that sometimes you can't find a waiter on the beach and, if you manage to, it takes quite a while to get your order.
I'm a seasoned traveller and have stayed in good and bad hotels around the world. This is one of the good ones. It's not luxurious - but it's not meant to be, it's a four star and it earns and deserves its stars. You don't always get what you pay for where hotels are concerned...you do at the Grecotel Filoxemia.

My stay at Filoxenia Hotel was a mixture of positive and negative experiences, with the location and some outdoor areas standing out but many aspects clouding the stay.
Positives:
The location of the hotel was excellent – ideal for anyone looking to explore the city and the surrounding area. There was a bus stop right in front of the hotel. The ticket costs €1.50 for one ride per person. Of particular note are the well-maintained beach section and the outdoor facilities. These were a real plus and provided relaxing hours in beautiful surroundings.
Negatives:
Unfortunately, there are several points that made the stay disappointing. The bathroom in our room was heavily worn, without a shower curtain, which made showering difficult and wet the entire room. In addition, the dishes were often greasy, which further worsened the overall impression. The food was boring, with very little choice and hardly any variety, so after a few days you were already craving something else. Our stay amounted to ten days, which is why we ate out two to three times.
Another annoyance was the light in the hallway that burned all night and shone through the door gap in our room, disturbing my sleep. For example, motion detectors would be a good remedy. The clairvoyance of the hotel also contributed to troubled nights, as one could clearly hear the return of other guests to their rooms.
The lack of value for money was particularly disappointing. For the price you pay, you expect significantly more comfort and service. Unfortunately, the service was in need of improvement: Orders took a long time, and the coffee was thin and tasteless – anything but what you would expect from a good hotel.
It was also a shame that the hotel did not have its own bar to end the day comfortably after dinner. Guests were therefore more or less dependent on going out on the seafront outside, which could be an unnecessary expense for many.
Conclusion:
Although the location and the well-kept outdoor facilities are definitely pluses, the price-performance ratio is unfortunately not right here. The service left much to be desired, the food was monotonous and the comfort in the room was compromised by several flaws. There is certainly room for improvement here. Those just looking for a good location might be satisfied here, but for the price there are certainly better alternatives.

Overall we had a nice stay here, however I don't think it is good value for money. It was quite expensive and there are just a few things that I would expect the hotel to be doing differently for that amount of money. Firstly, the standard of the rooms and how they are cleaned - the towels and beds are changed daily, but some days the dirty glasses were left in the room and the bathroom clearly hadn't been cleaned. Our phone did not work so there was no way of us calling down to reception and the room was just very dated. Secondly, the pool was covered in mildew and dirt. Thirdly, the reception staff. They came across extremely aloof and not approachable. That being said, all of the other staff we encountered were amazing - especially the staff who work by the pool and sea daily bringing drinks and food. They worked extremely hard and were always happy to help. We only had breakfast included so can't speak for anything else but the breakfast was nice enough with a good selection and a few days we ordered snacks from the beach bar and they were always fresh and delicious. We would suggest having table numbers so customers can go up and order themselves or employing more staff as sometimes we would have to wait a long time to find a member of staff to order with. The hotel is a great place to relax and unwind with it being right on the beach, beautiful location and if they made these changes it has the potential of being a 5*. Thank you for having us!

Dear Ellie F, We would like to thank you for choosing our Hotel for your vacation and for taking the time to share your experience on Tripadvisor. We are very pleased that you noticed and mentioned the pleasant points of your stay and that you had a positive overall experience with us. However, we do not overlook the points that did not meet your expectations. The points you mention, such as the rooms, the cleanliness or some of the other aspects you point out, are things that concern us and certainly do not represent the service we want to provide. We assure you that we will raise the issues from your stay with the appropriate departments to make the necessary changes and improvements. Thank you again for your constructive feedback and we hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you back to Grecotel Filoxenia for an overall enjoyable stay at our hotel. Sincerely, Grecotel Filoxenia team

Although I had read some awful reviews on here I'm happy to say we had a wonderful 2 weeks. Firstly, the breakfast options were incredible, so much to choose from, all fresh, at least 12 hot options, meats, cheeses, fresh fruit, pastries, cereals and seeds/nuts, lots of different breads and now toast, could not fault it. Lobby must have improved because its lovely. All staff are delightfull, helpful and friendly. Extremely clean everywhere.
On the negative side rooms are very tired and require a few more 4 star expected items like tea/coffee making facilities in room, we had a shower curtain others did not. Once rectified this hotel will be a superb getaway, amazing views, quiet and comfortable. I would not recommend for the physically disabled at the moment, one big problem is the lack of accessible toilets around the pool and beach, I either had to go back to our room or the lobby, not ideal in a wet swimsuit. I found the beach access difficult, the ramps to steep and the steps on to the beach need a handrail.
Buses from outside the hotel gates are a plus, number 1 and 2 every 15 mins €1.50 no matter how far. We had a lovely relaxing holiday. I would go back if they fix the problems. I rate this hotel 3 star plus.

The Grecotel Filoxenia is wonderful.
The service from the staff is courteous and caring.
The complex is very well maintained and you immediately feel at home and at home. The restaurant overlooks the pool and the sea. You have the option of sitting in the middle or quietly and romantically.
I had a halfboard and could choose whether I wanted breakfast, lunch or dinner.
The spa area is small but efficient. There is a wonderful masseuse but unfortunately no trained beautician. The small fitness room is well equipped and you can work out well.
The bus goes directly into town every 15 minutes right in front of the hotel, but you can also walk for about 30 minutes. There are many taverns on the way into town with good and cheap food. Kalamata has wonderful markets and much more.
I had the Cozy Room with a view of the mountains and the sea - wonderful.
The chef puts a lot of pride in his buffet and there is something for all tastes every day and vegetarians are also well catered for.
The sea, with the cleanest and clearest water, is just a few steps from the terrace.
There were always enough parasols and comfortable loungers.
The hotel offers so much more but you are not really informed about it, which is a shame.
The bar and wine menu is only available on request and it is a few dodgy copied sheets.
There is no information about the spa or room service in the rooms and when you look for more information you are referred to an app that supposedly has this information but doesn't always work.
I personally belong to the generation that appreciates menus and information that I can browse through.
All in all, it was a wonderful time and I can only recommend this hotel to everyone.
My wish for this hotel would be that they would join forces with a rescue team for cats and perhaps incorporate it into their concept like in other countries.
Thank you for a really great time and I really enjoyed the 3 weeks

The hotel needs building and management restoration.
We needed early check in because of the high temperature (asking that 1 month and two days before the check in) and that was never done (they ignored our notice that we had a 12 month baby...). The room when got ready was full of insects...
We told them to prepare the baby's meal early at the chech in and they forgot it!! The manager for these reasons upgraded our room....
During the breakfast and the dinner the dirty dishes were not taken quickly and as a result we had to wait for an empty table without flies.... The waiters had not a clean role...
The rooms are daily getting prepared until 3pm so after swimming we had to wait the inadequate personnel to clean the room and change towels...
It's definitely overrated. You pay only the location....

This hotel is truly beautifully situated by the sea with a beautiful swimming pool and restaurant. The breakfast is varied and delicious. All worthy of 4 stars. However, the rooms are dated, the towels and bedding are gray due to frequent washing, not worthy of 4 stars. Furthermore, a fresh orange juice costs 6.50 euros and it is also pricey to have lunch and/or dinner at the hotel. It's a shame that you send guests to restaurants outside the hotel while the money could be better spent there. The hotel is located at the end of a long boulevard, the first better restaurants can only be found after about a 25-minute walk. Hardly leaving the hotel during your holiday can be very costly financially. So bring your walking shoes or rent a scooter or car. You can also take a bus, which always costs 1.50 pp per trip, even if you get off after 3 stops. Bus stops in front of the hotel. Furthermore, there is some lack of information. No book in the room with information about the hotel or surrounding area, the available spa, etc. Also no hotel app. Furthermore, there is overdue maintenance, etc., although they were busy at the time of our stay. The hotel is medium-sized, so you do not easily get in touch with other guests and staff. They are friendly but a bit distant and you are not recognized as new guests. Furthermore, the hotel is very attractive. And...the beds are comfortable! The very good rating is really for the location and atmosphere.

This is a fantastic property and a great location. However to be fair and honest, it needs updating - more than simply a coat of paint. There is wear and tear showing extensively in the hallways and rooms.
The bath/shower arrangement is terrible. There is a bathtub without a shower curtain or door. Despite my best efforts, by the time I finished showering, water was everywhere and I used the bathmat and a full-sized towel to mop up the floor. My wile's shower produced the same result. The door has soaked up floor water from previous guests and is swollen. (see photos). Also, there were no wash cloths. Day two, we each decided that the better choice was a bath with a t-shirt substituting for a washcloth. To our chagrin, there is no stopper.so a second piece of clothing is used as a stopper.
The toilet is so close to the wall that it is quite difficult to use.
The umbrellas and sunchairs require the purchase of food or beverage. At this room rate, they should be included.
The beds are very comfortable. In our room "double" is actually a king.
The breakfast has an enormous selection and the staff throughout the property are very friendly and helpful.

The hotel is beautiful as well as the garden and beach. In that respect, it really is a paradise here! And absolutely worthy of 4 stars. That does not apply to my Cozy room, which is rather basic and simply furnished.
The breakfast is delicious and the staff is generally very professional and nice.
Unfortunately, I find them very impersonal and there is little or no chat with the guests. And that's what's so important! That is true almost across the board. There is little atmosphere; in fact, it is boring and there is hardly any laughter. Such a shame!
In addition, the prices of the drinks and lunches are very high so you will look for it outside the hotel. A simple sandwich is unfortunately not available ........

Generally it's a lovely hotel. Clean, spacious rooms, beautiful pool with plenty of sun loungers and shade. Also on the beach which is pebbly so you may need beach shoes. Waiters constantly patrolling for drinks and snacks so you don't have to move. Beach towels are fluffy and long!!! Theres a bus into the centre which stops right outside the hotel and is 1.5 euros per trip. Loads of great restaurants all along the front to the marina.
Negatives are no shower curtain in the bathroom so floor gets really wet. There are no no smoking areas and the Greeks unfortunately will light up everywhere. There's nothing for kids other than the pool so I wouldn't take kids there.

All hotels offer excursions the hotel it self does not organize any a good site to follow on kalamata in kalamatain.gr
It provides a wide selection of details not only on excursions but all that is going on and is very local and highly up to date .
There is a boat excursion from town that goes around the beaches and good locations but unfortunately I don't follow the details as we organize our own excursions as a family - how ever the hotel enjoys a magnificent location over a really nice beach .
A bus just outside the hotel takes you into town fairly often I think in the summer every 30 min and in the winter every hour . Taxis are not expensive either .

"There are no curtains or glass to the shower. It's overrated (only the location is perfect). The personnel is not enough. "Read full review
