This large chateau has only 4 personnel, including gardeners. The policy is no room cleaning unless the stay is for 3 or more days. The restaurant is closed. The lady on reception Vero was very helpful and pleasant but she had to do the breakfast, the bar, in fact everything. At 8.00pm there were no staff until the next morning. Therefore guests returning from dinner out have to let themselves in and search around for lights in a totally dark hotel. The breakfast was very basic. The pool has building work being done. Full marks to the 3 staff we saw but the owners are obviously cutting costs to basic minimum. This was our sixth hotel stay in the last 12 days and was the worst by a long way.

We stayed 2 nights at the Chateau and couldn’t have been made more welcome. As you approach the Chateau it looks beautiful as you come up the drive lined with trees. A little sunshine would have added to the beauty, sadly for us this weekend it was not to be. Dinner was a surprise menu prepared by the chef with local produce. We were asked about any dislikes or allergies and the food was prepared accordingly. Totally amazing, ingenious with unexpected and ingredients we had not tried before. Let the chef do this for you too! The only downside was an American guest who was staying our second night. Rude to staff, demanding and thinking he knew best we felt we had to apologise to the staff for his obnoxious behaviour! Apart from him the whole stay was delightful and thoroughly recommend going there. Thank you

My wife and I, our son and his fiancee and two close friends checked in here for a short break to help us celebrate a milestone wedding anniversary. Our chosen room was one that we had stayed in many times which included a sitting room in an elevated tower (No. 21) We ate in the Chateau restaurant one night prior to which we had a wine tasting & tour in the Chateau cellars. The maitre & sommelier (Alex & Constantin) were so knowledgeable but also brought flair and personability to their time with us. We recommend this Chateau highly

I am sorry to say that this hotel doesn’t live up to expectations. I wanted to love staying here, but after 4 night I’m glad to be going home. On arrival there was no one to help with our bags! No shower cubicle in the bath room Only a hand held shower in the bath, I find this a bit odd as this is not a cheap hotel. There was no kettle in the room so we could make a cup of tea after our long journey, however the receptionist a lovely lady left her post to make us one. The management don’t seem to worry about the resident children running up and down the corridors screaming. They may live here but as a paying guest it’s not what I want to here. I’m not going to talk about the Wi-Fi it depresses me. The best thing about the hotel is the restaurant the food was above average this I would give 10/10. The hotel needs investment and a little love.

We are grateful for the time you took to share your thoughts on your stay at Château de Marçay. We do not have a porter but usually the person at the reception offers his help with pleasure. When you book, don't hesitate to tell us your preferences (shower / bath) so that your stay is at its best. The installation of kettle in the rooms or a specific corner is part of our projects for the next season, meanwhile, as far as possible we meet your requests for hot drinks. Our hotel welcomes families and we are sorry if your stay has not been as quiet as expected. Finally, we thank you for your compliments on the restaurant, and we forward them to the services concerned. Looking forward to seeing you at the Château. The team of Château de Marçay

We are a couple in our 30s and stayed in the main part of the chateaux for 2 nights. The room and bathroom were ample sized and the fan kept us cool (but no aircon I could find). The idyllic surroundings make this place peaceful and quiet. The pool is heated to a perfect ‘cooling’ off temperature from sunbathing and also offers a view of the valley and Marçay itself. It was often quiet so we had it to ourselves. The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful. They suggested a garage for our car that needed fixing and the restaurant accommodated our eating habits. We are vegetarian and I am pregnant but they went out their way to prove things without raw eggs and soft cheese, which is difficult in France! We are ‘foodies’ and I was really impressed with the local, creative ingredients and menu in general. Everything we had was delicious and explained upon serving. The grounds are big enough to go for a gentle stroll to dogest or eat your own picnic in the shade, play tennis or pétanque. We hope to come back!

There’s something off about this place. The food is really dreadful. Others have written about the limited menu and about the long waits. It’s true and the wait was really peculiar, about 45 minutes between soup and main course for us. But what drove me most to write a review was the indifferently cooked vegetables, unseasoned fish and rock hard chips of bacon garnish. Only go here after you make sure it’s back on track.

Thank you for taking the time to write this review. Unfortunately, at the time of your visit, we were temporarily short of staff due to the sudden departure of one team member and the illness of another, which explains this long wait. We offer 3 starters, 4 courses and 3 desserts in order to offer our customers fresh and cooked products on site. We change our menu around every month. We are sorry that the meal has disappointed you and invite you to come back to make a better picture of our restaurant. Best regards, Château de Marçay Team

I stayed at this Château during a cycling holiday of Loire valley and loved it. It is a beautiful Château with lovely rooms. Check in was easy and the staff are lovely. I had also booked dinner at the restaurant and the food was delicious and service were fantastic. As soon as I arrived I also made use of the pool after a long day of cycling it was a welcome relief to sore legs.

A big thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. The Castle is indeed a beautiful step during a bike holiday, mixing comfort, convenience from our position not far from the slopes along the Vienne and the Loire, our bike garage and good food in a warm place. Very nice stay here, lovely stop off point on the way down to the south. Very nice pool and setting all round. Only taken a mark off as the bathroom was dated with no holder for the shower head, and service a bit slow in the cocktail bar. But as those are very much first world problems, I'd still highly recommend!

Thank you for your telling your opininon about your stay. At the castle, we have several types of rooms. Some only have showers or bathtubs, others have both bathtubs and showers. If we were lucky enough to welcome you again, we would be happy to do our best to accommodate your particular bathroom request. We look forward to seeing you at the Château for a second stay. In 2017 we had an unforgettable stay (accommodation and restaurant) in Château de Marcay; reason for booking the chateau again on our trip to the French Atlantic coast. Assuming we booked the same room in the castle, it turned out that we got a room in the West wing; an absolutely smaller, less luxurious room although the price was equal to the year before. So be sure what room you book. This room had a very small garden 3x3 m2 with 2 chairs and a table. Through a small path in the hedge it was possible to walk to the swimming pool. The bathroom only had a hand shower which you while taking your shower or trying to wash your hair (no facility to attach the shower). So I had to ask my husband to hold the shower while washing my hair. The door of the shower – in the bath- didn’t close very well, so within a few seconds the bathroom and water closet were soaking wet. So we had to use our towels to dry the floor, which had become dangerously slippery. Service at the swimming pool was very good, although it took some time. Breakfast was ok. The hotel seems to be under new management, since a sticker was pasted over the name of the former manager. New management meant to us loss of quality. But we will not return; not because of the (bath) room, but mainly because of the even greater disappointment and bad service in the restaurant “La table du Marcay”.

The year 2018 was a year of change for Château de Marçay and we are sorry to see that our renewal has not convinced you. When you book, don't hesitate to tell us your preferences. In this case we do our best to assign a room corresponding to your needs. (Location in the hotel, bath or shower, separate toilet or not ...) The rooms on the ground floor of the West Wing are very popular and their private terraces very appreciated for a moment of calm. Best regards, Château de Marçay Team

I can't write a review of the hotel without also mentioning the restaurant as our experience had both intimately paired. When we arrived it was like you were in one of those period piece movies with you riding your horse across their grand entryway heading toward the castle. It is magnificent. Checkin was easy and they upgraded us to the Superior Room at the top of the right tower seen in the picture. This is the room that you want - and just so you know, the bathroom occupies almost half of the circumference of the tower on that floor. It was indeed very impressive - just search for pictures on Trip Advisor of the Superior Room and you'll see the bathroom. Only problem (that I'm beginning to suspect is more of a French thing) is that the shower temperature doesn't go above 38 degrees (slightly above body temperature or what we commonly refer to as "lukewarm"). This was annoying but expected at this point in our travels given other hotels were the same way. Now on to the dinner. You want to make sure you have reservations set up in advance. The chef had a special menu set up for the winter time that was 8 courses that each had black truffles incorporated in it somewhat - even the dessert! Actually we got 10 courses that evening but the waiter informed us that they didn't count the other 2 in their price as they didn't include truffles in them. The cost was around $80/person not including wine. Plan to spend 3-4 hours for this dining experience. I calculated an average of 24 minutes per course. It's a French dining marathon. Our waiter informed us during dinner that since we purchased the fixed price truffle menu that we got free passes to join the truffle hunt the following morning with the chef. So we did that and had a blast. It was also a great time to talk to the chef about his thoughts into why each course was made the way it was and hear his thoughts about the myriad uses of truffles. The guide who took us on our truffle hunting walk was entertaining (although my wife had to translate for me as he only spoke French to our group). Their 2 dogs are hilarious as they seemed to know how to maximize the treats he gave them for as minimal amount of truffle finding they needed to do. That didn't stop them from finding us tangerine sized balls of truffles which is quite amazing given how expensive those little guys are. So in summary, you must do the full experience of staying at the chateau and eating at their restaurant. I've included this same review in both the hotel and restaurant portions for this reason. I'd be curious to know if you had a different experience - please leave feedback and let me know. Thank you.

Dear 232az, A warm thank you for taking the time to write all these lines about your stay at the Chateau. We are delighted that you enjoyed our historic site, as well as your experience at the Table de Marçay and Chef Romain Thevenon's proposals around the truffle. The cavage is a unique experience that we are happy to be able to offer this season to our clients wanting to know the origin of this black gold that treats them so much on the plate. Best wishes and pleasure to welcome you again for the next truffle harvest in 2019 !
