Before our trip to Costa Rica we had been looking forward to our stay at this hotel in particular. All these former guests had told me so much good about it! I couldn't be more surprised/disappointed. All the recommendations of this hotel must be written by people with extremely low expectations - or by people who had some really good experiences not related to the hotel. At arrival we were met by the host, and he told us that our room was not ready yet. No problem - we could wait. He suggested that we took the trip down to the famous Rio Celeste. So we did; some stairs, a bridge, and at the end of the rail a nice place and a group of people gathered for swimming in the river. However, we didn't swim, because no one had told us to bring our swimwear. Still, at departure from the hotel, we had to pay $6 for this trip to the river - while he was making our room ready. FOOD: Fresh fruit at breakast tasted very well! "Juicy" chicken was dry and without taste. At breakfast one day we got toast that seemed to be toasted, cold and then warmed up. Dry! ROOM: A fan in the ceiling, no AC. That would be no problem, except when you have to close all windows and you have no circulation of air. No place to put your stuff. No shelf, no tray - not in the bedroom, not in the bathroom. Only place to leave your toilet bag is on top of the toilet. On the website it says daily cleaning of rooms. On our second day the host asked me if we wanted them to clean our room. I didn't know what to say. But - we had already decided to leave the hotel next day (one day earlier), so I told him it wouldn't be necessary. ANIMALS: Some horses were standing in less that 800 square feet (75 square meters) of mud right outside the beautiful garden. Two noisy dogs were running around yelling and fighting till late at night. Like I said, we left one day earlier, and I was happy to pay $100 for an extra night at another hotel. Important! It was raining most of the time. Like I told the host, it is not in his power to fix the weather. That wasn't the problem either. As you can see, I haven't said anything about bad weather or lack of activities in my report. We don't care about the weather when we travel. Getting wet is not a problem.…
We enjoyed our stay. Elías and his family were very welcoming and pleasant. The rooms were clean and comfortable. No bugs and the shower was warm. It is very close to Rio Celeste and the food at the restaurant was good. Our only dislike is that the price seemed too high for a cabina but everything about the stay was pleasant.
We stayed only for a night as we were enroute to La Fortuna. But we got here on a Saturday evening, had some really nice dinner (loved the shrimp rice) and then the following morning took David’s horseback rides to Rio Celeste. (David’s part of the family that runs the hotel). The place is beautiful. Although I personally was a bit nervous how thick the vegetation around us was, the staff put us at ease walking us around a bit, also making very reasonable accommodations as needed. also really appreciated the in-unit wifi. Overall, terrific value for money!!
Notable for its beautiful flower gardens, this Posada is in the country with rustic cabins and horses in a field in the back. We enjoyed relaxing in the hammocks in the garden, chatting with the parrot, and tasting the delicious home-cooked Costa Rican food in the open-air dining room. We walked to the National Park, Tonorio Volcano, along country roads, and we were able to see Lake Nicaragua from the road. A traditional Costa Rican breakfast was available for us even though we left early in the morning to catch the bus. Our hosts were very helpful and friendly.
Before our tour to the waterfalls, our tour guide Johnny took us here to have lunch. Needless to say the fresh cooked homemade food was delicious. The owners were so hospitable, I felt like I was having a meal with family. I would definitely recommend going here if you are in the area. My friends and I were there last week for a girls trip and I already want to go back. I am definitely going back to this beautiful country and be visiting Posada Rio Celeste La Amistad again.
