The Gran Muthu Imperial Hotel delivers a vibrant atmosphere, often noted for its engaging music and entertainment, though some guests find it excessively loud. While the location earns praise, opinions on cleanliness and room conditions are mixed, with certain guests commending the tidy spaces and others pointing out maintenance needs. Service quality varies, with accolades for staff friendliness contrasting reports of unreliable room service and facility hours. The value proposition is contentious, as some travelers question the food quality and pricing relative to the hotel's offerings.

Myself, significant other and one other couple stayed for 10 days in Jan. Overall we had a good time.
Pros: staff very excellent! We especially loved the sports bar staff yoan and yanexsy, server ritsy, two of the ladies who are servers in the main Buffett, as well as randy at the pool bar! We didn’t find any of the staff expecting tips, and were very appreciative when tips were given, but level of attentiveness was never lower without a tip! The grounds, pool, eating areas, and rooms were beautifully cleaned every single day. Yes, the pools are a little chilly at first, but refreshing in the heat! We were in Block 8 on the second floor with an amazing view, and our cleaner was amazing, even noticed a happy birthday card in our room and went out of her way to set up a little birthday set up and then deliver a cake in the evening, without us having ever said anything about the birthday during the trip! Lots of previous reviews about the beach, yes there were some rocks in the water, but we still found the beach to be beautiful, and was maybe a 4 minute walk from the pools, nothing crazy! If you walk along towards the neighbour resort rainbow it’s beautiful, as well as if you walk towards the family friendly resort, once on that beach you can walk all the way to the Melia down the road where they have a scuba shack where you can snorkel or scuba dive! The check in process was very fast, and a bellboy brings all your belongings to the block, and even brings them up the stairs to your room (this even at 01:30 when we arrived 3 hours late). Entertainment team is Amazing, not only do they make sitting by the pools fun, but the shows at night after dinner are amazing, specially loved the Cuban night show. The food was fine at the Buffett, we had very low expectations and were not disappointed nor did anyone in our party get sick at any point.

Cons: the Buffett line ups for the cooked to serve food were sometimes quite long, I think some of the problem were the short (ish) meal time hours with lunch only being 2 hours, but we always found something to eat. The a la Carte restaurants were not great, small portion sizes, and we didn’t find much of anything we wanted to eat, and most often after eating at an a la carte would hit up the Buffett after. The towels in the rooms were not always fully replaced, but when we asked the cleaning staff they were always quick to replace them for us. We heard people had a problem with the fridge being stocked, but we didnt have that problem.
You also cannot take money out At this resort like most, so bring enough cash or use visa at areas which accept visa.

Overall we all had a good vacation, and would return.

I had never been to Cuba but knew to set my expectations pretty low for the food so I'll start my review with that.

I was pleasantly surprised to find the food pretty tasty. There were some days better than others, but overall could always find something good to eat. According to another reviewer, Cuba is having an issue with coffee this year which now explains the awful concoction they serve in the dining room - don't bother. Order a coffee or cappuccino at the lobby bar instead and bring it to the dining room. Our only real issue was that we ate early everyday (7 am) and lunch wasn't served until 1 pm. Unlike other southern destinations, there is no snack food to be found in between mealtimes unless you head to the 'snack bar" and have fries or their version of a hamburger, which got old fast. Bring some snacks if you can (chips, crackers, peanut butter), I wish we had. Also, it's winter there, so no fresh fruit or fresh juice , everything is canned.

Our room overlooked the wading pool which was nice and quiet most times. Beds super comfortable, great water pressure in the shower and nice balcony. We didn't try the safe, carried our important stuff with us everywhere we went.

Pool situation, or specifically, pool loungers. The information card in our room said they do not allow pool loungers to be reserved. They absolutely don't enforce it. People would leave their towels on the chairs as early as 7 am to reserve their spot and not come back for hours. We didn't like to do it but really wanted to experience the pools at least once so headed to the infinity pool at 7 am, picked two chairs, left our books and towels and went to have breakfast. We were only gone for 1/2 hour but most people around us didn't show up fro 1 or 2 hours after putting down their towels. Disappointing that this is not enforced by the resort. At full capacity, the grounds can't accommodate that many people and we saw evidence of that our whole week as small outdoor bars and extra wooden shade umbrellas were being built in a matter of hours.

Beach is beautiful! Wide with white sand and turquoise waters, breathtaking! Never had an issue finding chairs on the beach and much quieter and less crowded than the pools. There is coral in the water but also plenty of sandy areas to walk in as well.

Overall, a really great resort with great people.

As a first time visitor to Cuba I think this was a great hotel. The room had a working air conditioner and fan, a beautiful clean space with a giant bed and the sofa turned into a smaller bed (my friend said this was a little hard). The shower had a waterfall option or a wand option and though our waterfall needed a clean for water flow the wand was good. The water pressure was nice and the temperature was very warm to hot. The mini bar was stocked daily with two sodas, two beers and a bottle of water (large) free of charge.

The atmosphere of the hotel was calm and relaxing in the daytime with a mix of fun zumba, waterfit or games and fun partying in the night with shows and music all around. The staff were always kind and friendly to us during our stay. Nearby to the hotel (a two minute walk past the security booth) there is a spa, restaurant, souvenir shops, disco and bowling.

The food was delicious and there was good variety to choose from daily. The food was fresh and well prepared and nothing caused any illness to any of us. There were some congestive lines for things like personalized omelettes, pancakes or cooked chicken or fish. The ice cream was the best and there were delicious cakes daily. Here was always a mix of fresh local fruit and canned fruit available at all meals and the bread was very popular for its sweet taste. Sometimes as well there were churros or coconuts available around populated areas. The final option was the 24/hrs snack bar perfect for late night fries (etc) or drinks. At lunch time there was a mini buffet available for those not wanting to change to go to the larger buffet. The water too was of good quality drinking or handwashing.

I only drink a little so I didn't partake in the bar as much, but all bar staff were friendly and attentive when I did. If you like strong drinks you'll be fine. If not practice asking for "poquito alcohol por favor" as I did. If you order an americano coffee they give a stick of sugar cane to chew which was awesome.

Check in and out were simple and they provide a map to get to and from the room and the bellhops drove us and brought our bags within minutes.

The excursions available were applicable to most hotels it seems.

The room was clean and the beds were good, so overal the room was good.
The buffet had a good variety of options, although very little fruit (papaya, pineapple, bananas and fruit salad in syrup). The breads were very good!
We went to the Mediterranean a-la-carte restaurant and were presented with the worst meal we have had ever... not only was the food terrible, there was cross-contamination of foods. One of our group had a tuna allergy, told the staff of the allergy, made sure not to order anything that would be possibly be cut with the same knives (shrimp vs any other fish etc.) and in a few minutes experienced an allergic reaction. All of the other people eating at our table could not even eat the food. Very poor quality.
With all that being said, the worst thing about this location is definitely all of the plastic bags floating in the ocean and on the beach in front of this resort. It was very sad to see. We ended up cleaning the beach and ocean for hours along with many other earth conscious travellers. It appears that the garbage is being dumped into the ocean or garbage dumpsters are not being contained. Primarily it was small clear plastic bags (aprox 3 x 3) that were everywhere.

Let us talk about positives.. the hotel is newer than most in the Cayo coco are,,and is OK..Lobby nice, pools very nice, Buffet food average, good vegetarian selection than any resort I have been to a carte (seafood nice) Chinese OK, International (No Good) Rooms good, lots of bars and good 24hr snack bar..
NOW..
1. the rooms have bugs and we complained three times, but no one cares, asked me to stay in the room from 11-4 as the cleaning lady will come and tell her??? Say what?? Finally day four, she gave me a can of insect spray and asked me to spray it.. thanks I said.. did not help at all.. ( deceptive)
2. Hotel on the beach?? This is a hotel on the sea..and beach is about 10-12 minutes walk unless you are in the closet building #4 ( which is also not on the beach.. beach is sandy with the huts and a small bar.. but caution, it is not clean at all, it has weeds as we went in 500-600 ft into the beach and were fully covered with weeds and came out scratching all over.. they do clean the sand area but weeds overpower and please be careful (deceptive)
4. Finally, I have never seen a resort servicing your room cleaning every day, but do not change the towels for four days in a row..even the pool towels ( there was a sign saying “there is not clean towels”) for four days and finally at 5PM the truck came in with fresh towels... so please be careful, if you like cleanliness? ( deceptive)

Stayed here Feb. 17 - 24th, resort is clean, modern and everything is quite conveniently placed. We lost water for about 4 hours one day and the lights went out briefly one night.

Pools are nice but could use a mid day cleaning of all the bugs and stuff floating in the water, beach is sandy but has quite a few small shells in the mix, the pergolas are a fair little jaunt from the bar and the washrooms. The biggest issue with the pool and the beach is the lack of shade and loungers. The saving of loungers and beds is a huge problem at this resort even though signs are posted indicating this is not allowed. Most morning all loungers and beds were saved by 8:00 am. They were building permanent umbrellas for shade while we were there around the pools. There were quite a few loungers around the small kiddie pool, I think these should be moved back over to the main pool area, or get more loungers or enforce the no saving! Only one waiter on the beach and only once did I see a waiter at the pool area.

Buffet is a little small for the size of the resort and line ups can be quite long, wait service for drinks or even re-setting the tables is very slow. Lots of variety of food and most of the time the quality was good.

Snack bar could be great if the food that you ordered was actually warm and served on clean plates! Service here is almost non-existent, we waited at least 60 minutes one time for our order to be taken and served and it was ice cold.

Lobby service is very poor as well, you literally have to wave down a server.

Overall the resort is nice but I have never had such poor service in any other of my visits to Cuba. Would I go back? I'm not sure the bad service really turned me off this resort.

For all you "Newbie" Cuban resort travellers, the portrayed Cuban resort star ratings are flawed. Don't expect a true 5 star resort experience any where in the world for under $1000.00. If you find one, call me and I will book it right away. I have travelled to Cuba 25 times over the years and I am still looking. This Gran Muthu Imperial resort is a beautiful modern facility that is only 1 year old, hence, the staff are young, the management is also young but the resort is very fresh and delivers. As with all Cuban resorts, food imports are problematic with the USA embargos and issues with their socialist trading partners. The Cubans are renowned in doing the best they can with what they have in hand. This also applies to their food services at all of the Cuban resorts. The food at this resort was fine at the buffet, weak a bit at the "a la cartes" but generally acceptable every where else. Table service was the best to be expected with all of the young staff. They are very amiable, well coiffed, good humoured and very endearing people. I loved the Cuban staff. The rooms are new and functional but the cleaning staff lack a bit of consistency. Generally the resort is extremely clean with immaculate public bathrooms etc. Expect a few glitches here and there concerning the infrastructure.

If any one complains about the beaches in the area they should have their heads examined. You have the choice of the resort beach with its own beach bar, also and including the 13 kms beach at the sister Gran Muthu resort just beside the Imperial, the world renowned Pilar beach just down the road, and last but not least the Gran Muthu Rainbow beach about a 10 minute walk down the beach from the resort. For all you younger travellers, they have a disco 5 minutes down the road by foot from the resort which also serves the locals and other Muthu resorts. The pools are multi levelled, very functional, and have a beautiful few of the coast and sea.

To conclude, I will definitely go back with my girlfriend and really enjoyed my stay of 10 days. For all of you other weird towel reservation complainers and grumpy faced people, I urge you to stay away and go somewhere else and let the others enjoy this Gran Muthu Imperial resort and the Cuban people.

We arrived late evening on Feb 8th, bus ride is not a long one.Our check in was a process but we did end up getting into our room before midnight. The room had two beds instead of the king we had requested, it was clean and had some water, cola and a couple of beers. We went without any cola for the rest of the week. We were only provided with bottle of water per day. We were given beach towels in our room and were told we could exchange them daily by the pool, it never happened. We used the same beach towels all week and each time we tried to exchange them we were told no towels.
The food is standard for Cuba, lots of meat very little veg. We managed to get some lettuce on our second last day.
Staff for the most part are friendly but there is no bar service around the pool, you must get up and get it yourself.
The best coffee is in the lobby bar but be prepared to stand in a line up just like Tim's. They only ever had one bartender serving guests while the other served the waitress. You were hard pressed to get a drink or coffee if you didn't stand in the line, floor service was very slow.
Overall this resort is far from a 5 star even by Cuban standards. There's very little activity on or off the resort unless you are willing to take long bus rides to get anywhere.
We enjoyed the sun but won't be returning to this resort.

Resort was clean but still has some cuban inefficiencies, you have to wait in line for coffee because they are making it fresh, how about a self serve carafe. Hard to get towels, drinks, its cuba and its cheap!
The maid service (Resty Sohe) was awesome, a little love goes a long way!
I'll address some things we expected from other reviews;
1) Beach is rocky at points once in the water, fine to walk on in bare feet
2) Lineups are typical because the buffet doesn't open until 9am, closes at 11 and re-opens at 1 pm, once opened there is plenty of room to sit, the food areas can be crowded and hectic.
3) Wine and booze upgrades are affordable
4) Restaurant reservations are a pain, they were typically half full due to long lines to make reservations, if you don't mind the 8pm sitting there is plenty of space, catch the reservation girl (who was miserable) later in the day. Don't lose the microscopic piece of paper they give you.
5)If you get there early expect to wait until 4 pm or longer for your room, the resort charges people 10 cuc each hour for late checkout and people like me who had a 9 pm flight gladly pay it. (Hint, if you upgrade to Ocean view once you arrive this is included)

14 days in this hotel. Over all, it was excellent stay! Just want mention some you should concern
**Bring water shoes as a bit rocky in the ocean.
**You can bring snorkel, you will be amazed by the tropical fish and coral.
The location is bit windy, so if you R Kate surfer and walk distance on the beach there is a few school can rent.
**Bring ENOUGH CASH with you as credit card doesn't work even at airport. We went bank with taxi (hotel told us 5 CUC per person to go and back , but when I came back, the driver asked 10 CUC, Canadian 1$=Cuban $0.68 )
**WiFi need to pay, 1CUC perso per hour, and quality is very good.
**Bring some warm cloth as Feb the weather at evening still cold a little, special with windy day
** If you R picky and bring your own beach towel since hotel provide once you stay and don’t exchange. We keep ours for two weeks, there is no problem with us.

The hotel is new, the room is bright and clean. Every day in the fridge you have one big bottle of water, beer etc. You can bring enpty bottle and ask lobby to give new one. Stuffs are very friendly. Food was very good but most R not very warm, unless you wait in line to get personalize cooked chicken or fish etc. lots fruits, and ice cream, my favorite one was coconuts. The lobby bar make very good coffee. Snak bar make very good food also. We r not drinker, so can't tell.

Pools view is amazing with ocean front! Gym is very clean, staff Giovanni is very kind and work hard to keep the gym nice. The employees are really welcoming, and try hard to make people happy. The show & dancers were very professional, I love all.

there is many great thing to write, but also some people may complain, it is same other resort, someone is happy and others not.

You do not need to give a credit card at check in. But I would take one with you since it is easiest to pay for any excursions or a cigar at the cigar bar with credit card.
