We stayed here for 2 weeks and really enjoyed. It , we were a bit sceptical of it being a 3 star and some of the reviews but we had an amazing time , upon check in we were upgraded to a junior suite from an ocean view and the room was steps away from the beach . The staff are lovely from the Gardner to Rodney the pool man and all reception staff , the location is amazing , on one of the best beaches in the south , beautiful white sand , warm ocean , and very peaceful, we spent our days just relaxing , it’s about a 5min walk into the gap which has several great restaurants including mimosa , primo , harlequin , cafe sol , and the best bar we went in was the rum shop which has a great atmosphere or if you walk the other way you can eat with the locals very cheap, daddy’s was our favourite , we ate lunch in the hotel a couple of times and the food was very good , the rooms are quite dated and tired but are spotlessly clean and have every amenity you would want and let’s face it who wants to spend there time in a hotel room when the beach is that beautiful, we spent several afternoons up at Worthing beach which is about 10 minutes walk and has a couple of bars on the beach , a really nice spot to sit and watch the world go by , the hotel has happy hour between 6/7 and the service can be a bit sketchy which in 2 weeks is a very minor complaint , overall we loved it here and I would return tommorow

Just returned from the most amazing stay at this fabulous hotel. The hotel is ideally situated on Dover beach in the centre of st Lawrence gap. I would firstly like to recognise the staff who do an amazing job always with a smile on their face. Ken the bar waiter made my birthday celebrations memorable by going over and above with his actions he is an asset to the hotel. I water sports / maintenance guy worked tirelessly always with a smile on his face making sure the pool and beach area were pristine. The room although a little dated was spotlessly clean and serviced everyday to a high standard. The uninterrupted views across the clean sand and water made seeing the turtles that live just in front the hotel an amazing experience. The breakfast and lunch served at the restaurant was exceptional and good value for money served with an amazing vibe making the experience more enjoyable. Sundays steel band was a great experience and made relaxing by the water even more perfect.

My first trip to Barbados and the Southern Palms exceeded expectations. The rooms and resort were very clean. The air conditioning was good. The resort is right on the beach and you can wake up in the morning walk 10 steps and be in the ocean. The beach is beautiful with soft white sand and the water is clear and warm. The beach was not crowded, even though it was Christmas and New Year’s. There was always available cots and shade from a palm tree.
The staff were friendly and accommodating. The food at the restaurant was average and not cheap, but there are many restaurants and places to grab a quick bite within walking distance.
When I go back to Barbados, I will definitely stay at the Southern Palms again.

I recently returned from a 2 week holiday in Barbados and we stayed at Southern Palms. Although I found the staff to be really nice and tentative I was pretty underwhelmed with the hotel.

Firstly and this is no reflection on the hotel but merely based on location, I wouldn’t stay on Dover beach again. We booked this location to be close to the gap but unfortunately the beach was spoilt with bad sea weed and rough seas. If I ever return to Barbados I will definitely stay west or more south west to avoid this as the water is calmer and gets less sea weed. We also found the gap to be a lot quieter than we expected except for weekends night time when it gets slightly busier but overall didn’t find the gap to be half as lively as expected. Maybe it’s because technically June is out of season but I definitely wouldn’t say it’s got much going on Mon- Fri and is dead during the day.

The hotel itself is very basic. Although we had a lovely big balcony and a partial sea view the room was tiny and the bathroom was like a tiny box. You couldn’t even move in the shower. We have a couple of really stained tatty chairs in the room which were in dire need of being thrown out. Not sure why they keep them.

We also found the hotel layout a bit annoying with minimal sunbathing spots. There are some sun beds on the grass but by 3pm the sun is facing the other side so that’s annoying. There are sun loungers to use on the beach but no umbrellas so it’s either be in the shade or burn on the beach lol. We also found the atmosphere a bit somber, no music, always quiet and nobody around so we ended up spending most of our days on other beaches outside of the hotel. It feels like the hotel is definitely catered towards the older generation and while we aren’t that young ( a couple in our thirties) we like to travel to the Caribbean for the jolly atmosphere and you just don’t get that in this hotel.

One highlight to the location was twice during our stay we did see turtles laying eggs on the sand at night which was so cool.

But overall I wouldn’t stay here again. It really wasn’t great value for money. We have had much better quality stays for less when comparing to other places we have travelled and stayed in the Caribbean. And as mentioned if I did return to Barbados wouldn’t stay on the south coast.

We booked this hotel nearly 12 months in advance upgrading to an Ocean view room as we love to have an evening drink on the balcony enjoying the sounds of the waves. When we arrived we were taken to our room and our hearts sunk, we walked out on to the balcony and were greeted by not only the roof of the restaurant and bar area but to the direct right the massive air conditioning units which were unbearably noisy, you could not hear the beautiful waves at all. I was so upset I could have cried, this was not the paradise room I was expecting. I returned to reception straight away and told them how upset I was and they told me they may have a room available the next day, this ruined our first 24hrs and we were only on holiday for a week due to personal commitments (we were moved the next day down a couple of blocks - not perfect but much improved). After calming my husband down ( I chose the hotel) we went to the beach and hubby popped to the bar to get 2 rum punches, after 40mins he returned (I kid you not) the service is very very slow. His mood had not improved as you can imagine, we hardly used the bar after that as the service is so bad and didn’t even attempt to use the restaurant.
Another thing to note is there isn’t sufficient shade on the beach and only a few palm trees which frustratingly and annoyingly guests like to reserve super early and not use till the afternoon.

A few positives, the location of the hotel is amazing and the beach is just perfect, turtles bobbing their little heads up along the shore. The hotel is dated but we expected that. The staff are all lovely and friendly and St Lawrence gap is great with all the fantastic restaurants to choose from.

Check in: Check in was brilliant. Staff on the front desk were very helpful. Always someone available if you needed to ask any questions.

Room: We stayed in Barbados for 2 weeks. The room was small, but the bed was comfy and the room was always cleaned on a daily basis. New towels were always given when needed. You got given two pink beach towels at the start of your stay, at the end of the day or the next morning you just had to do to the front desk to change them or the towel store round the back of the rooms.

Food: The breakfast was amazing at the hotel. We ventured out to different places for breakfast but always ventured back to our hotel because the value for money was so good and the quality of the food was good. We are here on a few occasions and the food was good! Also, you can drink the water here, so every morning we grabbed a jug of water from the bar, which obviously saved lots of money.

Staff: The staff here were very friendly. The front desk were very helpful. The staff at the restaurant were helpful and also the staff on the bar. Happy to help whenever needed.

Location: What a location! After walking down the beach during our stay… this is the best location to stay. You can sunbathe on the beach and watch the turtles coming up for air which was amazing! As you go left down the beach it gets busier! Thankfully Southern Palms have bright pink towels, which makes it obvious for those staying in the resort. The beach has white sand which is stunning. The water is blue, but as the waves can be a little tough… it makes the water slightly cloudy. The view is stunning, however because the tide is strong it’s not the best to swim. Also if you try to swim with the turtles the visibility is poor.

Trips: I would recommend doing the following whilst in Barbados.

- elegancebarbados. Such a brilliant catamaran trip! You can swim with turtles on this trip and it’s beautiful. Remember your underwater camera!

I would recommend trying lots of different restaurants down at Lawrence Gap!

Just returned from southern palms and wow what a fantastic hotel. I requested a room with a great view for a friend who hasn't been abroad for many years and celebrating a big birthday they provide us with a beach front room just steps from the beach couldn't have been any better, thank you so much for that. Staff all friendly from cleaners to security and all the others in between. Water is provided all day by the pool ,definitely needed . The beds and pillows are so comfortable and air con is fantastic. Had a welcome gift on arrival in our room which was a lovely touch along with tea coffee and juice in fridge wasn't expecting that but really appreciated it. Restaurant has a good selection of food from breakfast to evening meals and I thought it was very reasonably priced.plenty of sun loungers around and about and on the beach. If you have a lounger on the beach they give you a flag to wave if you want anything they bring it to you, brilliant. really Can't fault this hotel I will definitely be back. It's sat on dover beach which is my favourite.

We had a wonderful time staying at this gem of a hotel. It’s in the perfect location and we had a fabulous ocean view room directly overlooking Dover Beach. Whilst our room was not overly modern this just added to its charm and had everything we needed. Bright, clean and immaculately serviced every day. Great air-con and everything where it should be (plug sockets, mirrors etc) and opening the curtains to that view every day was just magical. No mad rush for sun-beds when we were there, you could just grab one and settle down under one of the palm trees that provided adequate shade, although there were also plenty of beds by both pools. We had lunch there most days which was delicious and all the staff were always very friendly. It was our 10th wedding anniversary while we were there and we had a lovely surprise of some bubbles, card and flowers left in our room on the day which was a lovely touch. We were also able to keep our room on (for a fee) until 6pm on our last day which was very welcome. All in all a perfect stay from start to finish. We can’t wait to come back.

The Southern Palms is over priced for what it offers.
The pro’s - Great location and the beach is gorgeous, we saw turtles swimming in the sea and the sea can be quite surfy. The room was ok with a nice view of the pool & sea. Richard was lovely and very helpful also the pool guy was very friendly and never stopped working. Breakfast was the best meal and service of the day.
Cons - Was shocked we had to pay a daily rate to use the safe in the room. When we arrived it didn’t feel like a nice warm welcome just a list of charges and instructions. I didn’t find most of the staff that friendly and especially the reception staff and supervisors who let you in the restaurant.
We had breakfast & evening meal as part of our package and I would say the choice was very limited and definitely over priced.
The Wi-Fi was terrible in our room. Also when we stayed there most of the guests were of an older generation so if you are of an older generation it would suit you perfectly and I don’t mean that in a disrespectful way, as the entertainment is catered for you.
Also our room was very noisy at night with music coming from across the road. Also on the weekend cars racing up and down like it was in the movie fast & furious.
Overall I would say very over priced but great location, no issues at all with the room.
I wouldn’t stay there again or recommend to my family or friends.
Definitely didn’t offer the service I have received in other Caribbean islands.

This was our third trip to the Southern Palms, although it has been a few years since our last visit.
It was my wife’s 70th birthday while we were there, and the staff couldn’t do enough to make it special.
I emailed Jenni before arriving and asked her if she could organise a large bouquet of local flowers for my room and to charge them to my room account.
On arrival the flowers were in our room much to the delight of my wife.
On the day of my wife’s birthday the general manager Kelly had arranged a bottle of wine for my wife to be delivered to our room, a fantastic gesture and much appreciated.
We were lucky enough to come across a Hawksbill Turtle laying eggs on the beach at the hotel one evening.
The rooms are tastefully furnished and decorated, the bed was one of the most comfortable we had slept on. The air conditioning was very efficient and quiet.
Excellent location for all restaurants and bars in the Gap.
Would I go again- in a heartbeat, think the hotel will see us again next year.

The Garden / Pool View rooms all come with a balcony. If you would like a sea view you will need to book the Ocean View Room Category. Best wishes

The hotel stretches along the beach. So there are sea views I would think from most rooms. It's literally on the beach front . We were in a room furthest from the restaurant. Must have been all of a 5 minute walk max. On the flat . Not sure about refurbed rooms
