My husband and I traveled to Royal Barbados for 7 days. We stayed in a butler level, ocean view room. This was our third sandals experience and by far the best (even in the midst of a pandemic)! We had the absolute best butler team. Jerome and Rashid were so fun! They made us laugh, changed our dinner reservations one evening, called Captain Larry for us, and kept our drinks full. We ran late for our return Covid test because breakfast was a little slower that day and Rashid went to the nurses station on our behalf to arrange a later test. We’re pretty low maintenance butler guests (lots of folks fuss about theirs and are really needy), so they thought we were joking when instead of requesting specific drinks by the pool we said “surprise us”. Sure service is a little slower, and a lot of people complain about that, but we honestly didn’t care. Have a drink and relax! Our room was cleaned every day, the refrigerator restocked with water daily, the butler team asked for our preferences on chairs for the next day each evening, and walked us to dinner each night. The pool entertainment was fun and varied daily. Some of it was not exactly PG (but with only adults in the audience, who cares?). The “playmakers” had just as much fun as the guests. The main pool bar was very very slow in the afternoons, but several staff members walked around the pool taking drink orders which helped. We did not go to any of the nightly entertainment but did get a chance to enjoy live music over dinner at the American Tavern one evening. If you’re thinking about canceling because of all of the fussy reviews, don’t (unless you’re expecting to be treated like Rihanna). Relax and ask for Jerome and Rashid!

Lynnia-Shamara- & Raesheada our butlers at Sandals Royal Barbados are absolutely amazing. They have each went above and beyond to make sure our experience was one in a million. Outstanding service and will 100% be back again with the butler service. Well worth the money for the personalized services. Thank you girls for an unbelievable experience!!!!!

Please note this resort is not 5 star or exclusive for couples.... most stressful resort I have been too . And I was most dissapointed !! Nothing is exclusive .. hear from food / drinks/ romantic relaxing areas/ bars in the evening its all so very dissapointing ... pictures on the sandals website is nothing to compare to the resort .. no bali beds on beach / or around round the pools .. PLEASE SAVE YOUR MONEY all the negative reviews are so true ... 25min for drinks in the pool bar so frustrating. Pictures are of the supposedly luxury roof top terrace and cocktail bar.... ( it was catastrophic not luxury chill at all ..I could not believe my eyes !!

Background on Us: We have been to Sandals 7 times now visiting St. Lucia Halcyon (4 times), Grenada (1), Jamaica Whitehouse (1); Sandals Royal Barbados (1) Arrival/Airport/Transport: We highly recommend the Fast Track service to speed you thru customs. Unfortunately that’s where the good news ends. The coordination at the Sandals desk to confirm who had arrived and arrangement/waiting on shuttle was a bit of a train wreck. Took a long time and managed chaos is all that comes to mind. Tremendous room for improvement. Resort COVID Testing: Surprisingly this was managed pretty well and was fairly organized and efficient. The nurse will warn you that this test is a bit different than your home country and goes pretty deep. I believe I left some cerebral matter on the swab. Resort Grounds: The grounds were not what we are used to seeing. Grass was sparse in many areas and in the area around the walk out pools many trees and plants were overgrown and in need of care. Caused some of the pools to be quite littered with tree & plant debris. Resort Layout: It’s a large resort servicing both the Royal side and regular Barbados side. As a result you can expect to do a lot of walking to partake in collective resort amenities, pools, restaurants, etc. It does help keep weight maintenance under control 😉 Resort Swimming Pools: A number of pools to choose from including party pool, calmer pools, and quiet pools. Many pools with swim up bars or nearby bars. We will confirm, and it is MOST annoying, that if you don’t pay an extra 30-40% on top of already expensive prices you will struggle to get chairs at the pool. Butler service gets first dibs and take up quite a few spots. The rest are occupied (by placing a towel on the chair) by 7am. This means that while on vacation you have to wake up at 6am and go place towels you’ve procured from the day before to secure you a spot at the pool. It’s ridiculous at this level that you have a;, pay Butler prices to get a seat at the pool, or b; wake up at 6am while on vacation to do anything. Sandals needs to rethink the whole Butler strategy. Resort Beach: The beach and water were very nice. Clearest water next to Grenada. Now the resort had a huge misstep as with so much contention on getting chairs at the pools it was a really BAD idea to shut down the beach for 2 days for photo shoots and a full crew. Quite a customer dissatisfier……… Resort Bars: Plenty available. Never had to wait super long. However we found the same drink made by different bars and/or different bartenders could very in taste wildly. Resort Restaurants: Again the Butler service raises it’s ugly head. We were staying a week and day one went to the concierge to make reservations at the five restaurants that require them. Butler service gets priority. Then everyone else has to compete. We were only able to get 2 reservations during our entire stay. Some of the restaurants had decent food and decent service. While others, including one of the reservation restaurants (Butch’s Steak and Seafood) had food that was terribly disappointing. Some of the hostesses and waiters/waitresses were not as hospitable and made you feel more like and inconvenience rather that the source of their livelihood. One big note for wine enthusiasts. Sandals is big about advertising Robert Mondavi wine as a part of its 5-star service. Robert Mondavi is a good wine overall. But we learned quickly that the resort was scarce on this wine and was moving to an alternative. As to why the reasons given by different staff members varies so still not sure about root cause. However they are substituting a 4.1 star rated wine at $36 a bottle with a 3.2 star rated wine at about $6 a bottle. If you’re having supply issues or desire a change…. ok, so be it, but don’t try and play a really cheap and poor wine as an equivalent substitute. Closing Remarks: This was our least favorite resort thus far. We realize that COVID has had an overall effect and tried to be fair with our comments but bottom line don’t open the doors fully and take peoples money if you aren’t staffed and prepared to offer the 5-star service you like to advertise. Our bar from previous Sandals resorts (pre-covid) was pretty high and this resort and service just didn’t measure up. Significant observation were two British couples we met at various dinners (first time Sandals visitors) who said that they would never come to another Sandals resort again as the value was not there…. I could not really argue their point from this resort experience. Overall I would have to give it a 3.5 out of 5.

First, the good. Sandals is more affordable than most of the resorts on Barbados. We had a beautiful room in a great location, the covid tests on-site went smoothly, the food is generally good to very good (but not outstanding). We loved being away together for our first overseas trip without our children. Because the trip was in celebration of our tenth wedding anniversary, we splurged for a butler room, and were very impressed by Shamara and Arlene. They both worked very hard and were great communicators. Five stars to both of them. Second, the bad. A lot of small things went wrong, which added up to a decent amount of frustration. For example, our toilet seat was broken and fell off; it took 24 hours and repeated requests for it to be replaced. In-room movie rental didn't work, and we had to ask multiple times for the charges to be removed from our bill and involve our butler and her supervisor. We were sent a questionaire in advance about what snacks we'd like to have in the room, but then had to ask for them repeatedly after arriving. As loyalty members we were supposed to receive a discount on photos, but unless you mention that at purchase you don't get the discount. When we asked the front desk about this, they made a big deal about how hard it would be to refund us, and then never did. At that point, it wasn't worth the effort to argue. Housekeeping did a good job, but arrived at inconsistent times -- one day not until very late in the afternoon, and on our last morning, they kept trying to come in when we still had 45 minutes left before checkout and were packing. On our first morning, the butler Mark reserved our pool-side loungers using a sign for another room, and as a result we couldn't find them. We called Mark and he came to help, and he said he'd used the wrong number since he couldn't find the sign for our room, and that he did this so we'd know which one was for us. When I asked how we were supposed to have known these were our loungers, he had no answer. Descriptions of the various suites and their amenities on the website are confusing. Terms like "top tier suites" and "butler elite" are used, and they sound like they'd mean the same class of service, but they don't. For example, we thought our suite included private airport transport in a luxury vehicle. Turns out it did not, but when we were looking this up on the Sandals website later, we realized some less expensive suits did include this private transport. This makes no sense to us. At the end of the day, we don't need to ride in a Rolls Royce to the airport, but when you're lead to believe that you've paid for it, you want to have that amenity. In summary: while we loved being away together, we would not go back to this resort. Too many frustrations took up too much energy during our short trip. Who wants to waste time asking again and again for a new toilet seat when they're on a romantic getaway?
