The Funky Cichild is indeed a magical place. Situation in Cape Maclear along the shores of Monkey Bay. Sandy shores and rolling waves, to the horizon and beyond; a far green country touched by swift sunrises and sunsets. The views are the verranda are unmatched. The food is fresh, filling, with a variety of options with some delicious local touches. Do unto others as you wish others do unto you. The staff and managers were delightfully accomodating people. If you are a visitor to Malawi, be respectul to others, and learn how to say thankyou in Chichewa.
Travelled solo, met cool people, managers and staff helpful and genuine, beautiful views, boat trip and snorkelling, hiking the mountain, great food and rooms, fun pool table, and all round good vibes
This place is perfect for a single parent with a low budget !!!! One can stay in the lodge and have a break at the restaurant after the kids are asleep. And, you get a chance to mingle ! The managers are excellent, very dedicated, and care a lot about their clients. Thank you
The food was horrible, we had burgers with uncooked ground beef, Zero effort put into the salad with dirty cutlery. The service was terrible and demeaning , The Australian lady who welcomed us was amazing but the local help was racist if you are white you are served first. This experience put us off the funky cichlid, we left early and we will never be back.
Our family stayed there for one week. The backpackers is right on the beach, which is nice. It has one of the nicest bars at Cape Macclear and the prices for food and drinks are very good. The managers were very friendly. There are quite a few acitivities you can book, but they are not cheap. The rooms are VERY basic and VERY dark with just one small window. The ensuite bathroom only has a cold shower. Thankfully, there was a fan in the room. Power cuts of about 8 hours each day. It's a very remote place, a cute village right behind the backpackers, but village life is right there on the beach (women washing dishes, taking baths, washing their children, etc.) The beach is quite dirty where the village people do their daily business. Unfortunately, four out of five of us got sick with a tummy bug. Our son got so very sick that we had to take him to the clinic, which was another interesting experience, but fine. …
