We live in Malawi about an 1.5 hour away from Cape Maclear. Home for 8 1/2 years so far. We can usually do day trips to the lake so we don’t often stay at the lake. But once in awhile (like for our 18th wedding anniversary!), we like to go to Cape Maclear for a weekend. We kept it low-key this year but it was still so special b/c of our stay at Thumbi View. The staff was professional and friendly. The lakeview room was comfortable, the pool was refreshing, the view was amazing and the ambience was both great for meeting new people or just chilling. Just wonderful! We usually like to do snorkeling at Thumbi Island or a sunset cruise but this time we focused on hiking, swimming and lounging. But what really stood out for us was the delicious food! The unique spice combinations of the South African-style Indian buffet night still linger memorably on our palate even a week later! Loved Noleen’s creative expression of Indian food. And I also personally enjoyed the veggie burger and Thumbi Sunset cocktail for lunch. And the grilled kampango (catfish) dinner with fresh salad for our second dinner was fresh and scrumptious! This catfish was done excellently! And last but not least, the snacks for sale are authentic biltong, including chili bites! It doesn’t get better than this!

The view is beautiful, just like the pool and the bar. Unfortunately, the rooms were not clean and very small (we were staying in a 4-person dorm with a bathroom) for the price we paid. I think the accomodation was quite full, because we also had to wait 2 hours (!!) for our breakfast.

Thank you, it is always good to have feedback. My apologies if you felt the room was not cleaned to your satisfaction. Our staff clean all rooms every day, regardless of if it was occupied the day before or not. So I am concerned that you say it was not clean. Could you send me more details so I can take up this issue with staff. You say the room was small considering for what you paid. Your room was K12000 per person. Considering a standard full breakfast, which was included on your rate, is about K6000pp. That means you paid K6000 for an en-suite room per person. I would consider that value for money. Ot is a standard room with 2 bunk beds. We are aware of the issue with breakfast over Easter when we had about 60 people for breakfast every morning. This issue came everyone show up at the same time to order. We can not send that number of breakfasts out in minutes. We do realise this is an issue and have put in place ways to prevent this in future. So look forward to our breakfast buffet, in peak times.

We liked our stay at Thumbi View Lodge. From the pool and the dining area, you have a fantastic view over Thumbi West Island and the lake! We booked a room with lakeside view. That was a little bit disappointed, because first you had the parking space, then a big tree and then a little view from the lake. But overall it is a really basic lodge, but great for a stay! Very friendly staff and delicious diners!!

One of the most beautiful places at cape macclear in the price-performance comparison. You get what you pay for and have mostly friendly staff and good food. The place is usually quiet during the week (in the Covid time) on weekends sometimes too noisy, but all in all a nice place that we always like to visit.

We stayed at Thumbi View just before Christmas 2021. We chose it as it has a lovely open view of the lake, whereas some lodges are overgrown with trees. The view from around the pool is spectacular and the first lodge we have been to in Malawi with really comfortable sun loungers! We were lazy and just wanted a rest. The pool area was perfect for this. Our room was behind the dive school with a nice view of the beach. It had a double and a single bed and was spacious. It was also en-suite which was a nice surprise at this price. We ate almost all our meals at the lodge looking over the lake and were pleasantly surprised with each meal. It really is good value. The owners had, very kindly, got some special wine for us as it was my wife's birthday. The owners, Noleen and Chris, were very friendly and helpful throughout, as was the super-friendly cook who chatted to us every day and the barman, Ackim. I have stayed in several places in Cape McClear over the years but this takes some beating for the location, layout and friendliness. It is now my go-to place!

Stunning lodge! The owners and staff are super helpful and lovely people. The food was great! Exquisite view of the lake and islands. The swimming pool is the best place to be in the Malawian heat. Highly recommended! Tour to the island with traditional fish barbecue was a great experience. Walking distance to many bars and lodges for pub crawling and exploring. We've met amazing people from across the world at Thumbi View. Will definitely visit again when we're in Cape Maclear.

We have been coming to Thumbis for some time - it has the most friendly staff and beautiful views - but we think what really sets it apart is the incredible food! We had their vegetarian lasagne and it was the best we had ever had (and as vegetarians we have had a lot!). Spotless facilities, lovely atmosphere, well maintained pool and great location to explore everything that Cape Maclear had to offer - couldn't recommend staying here enough!

We stayed nearly a week here in Thumbi View Lodge and did very little other than enjoying Noleen's hearty breakfasts, swimming in the pool, chilling, and watching local boats go by on Lake Malawi. What a peaceful place well taken care of by the friendly owners, Noleen and Chris, and a wonderful local team who is professional and welcoming. Noleen generously gave us an upgrade from dorm to a beautiful twin room. Hot water, clean towels... Just thoroughly enjoyed our time here. Thanks so much, Noleen and Chris, for your hospitality as well as all the onward travel advice!
