In 2007, by chance, I stumbled upon this place, fell in love with it and decided to devote my life to its resurrection. To bring this place, previously chosen by the monks of Saint Anna’s order for his special energy and extraordinary charm, back to life. It has become the second great project of my life. The estate Monaci delle Terre Nere is situated along the slopes of Mount Etna, the biggest volcano in Europe on the border of the Etna National Park at 500mt above sea level. My wish has been to preserve the historic identity and local traditions, more than a Boutique Hotel it is a home which I hope retains its intimacy. The house which dates from 1800 is listed as one of historical importance. It is now a place where traditional Sicilian Architecture is combined with contemporary art and living.

We loved staying here at the end of our 2 week Sicily trip. It was so beautiful, peaceful and luxurious. Our room, Complesso, was actually a huge suite away from the main inn and a pleasant walk through orchards and vineyards to get to breakfast and dinner. Our room was exceptional. Fresh fruit, mini bar with stocked with wines from the estate, wood fire place ready to use, immaculate. Windows everywhere to enjoy the views. As others have noted, we were surprised that we could see other rooms but at a distance. Breakfast buffet the best with many fruits from the property and fresh honey, juicer, large selection to choose from. Only stayed 2 nights, wished for another 1 or 2.

My boyfriend and I came here for a nice get away and different Sicilian experience. We loved the balance of privacy but also fantastic service and attentiveness. The property is unique and special with a down to earth and comfortable feeling, however elevated chic in its execution. We felt there were a number of activities to enjoy which we took advantage of many. The food and wine was excellent! The biological and sustainable vision was very appreciated and noticed in every touch point. Everything was so fresh, clean, thoughtful, and heartfelt. We loved how relaxing and healing the property is...The only complaint were the bugs and bees in the summer - but understood! Would definitely recommend and hopefully get to come back.

I was very excited to spend the last four days of our Sicilian stay in this place but unfortunately, the excitement had to be tampered a little with a somewhat skewed price-quality ratio, mainly due to service. Cons: 1. This is a five-start resort as reflected in the price: there are expectations that come along with such an establishment. For one, I expect the staffs to be fully conversant in English. I know this is Italy but if a property is listed in Conde Nast and Mr. and Mrs. Smith, a certain level must be achieved. It cannot be that the person doesn't understand the requests and we were met with either 'I ask my manager' or 'please send email'. And.. the email contains copy paste from the website. 2. The hotel advertised sailing and Etna excursions, both of which we didn't get a clear answer of itinerary and costs despite sending email. So we called only to be told to... send another email. Only after I insisted I was put in touch with the Director of Operation who understood my request and provided me all I needed to know the night before my Etna tour which by that time was unfortunately too late. 3. We were given a big bottle (2 litre maybe?) of water for two persons for 24 hours. We asked before our stay if water is free flow but the answers were standard ' we have complimentary water, nespresso machine and boiler in the room'. So we brought our own water as tap water wasn't potable. Thing is, for such calibre resort who also claims the care for environment, I think it's reasonable to provide free flow water. Besides, it's environmentally-friendlier than our PET bottles. 4. During our stay, a construction was ongoing nearby. It is understandable during the day although not conducive for staying in. One day, the machine hammered all afternoon until 19.00. It stopped only when we called the reception and a person came over. The same happened the next day but because we were spending time indoor, we didn't bother. Pro: 1. Setting was beautiful: we enjoyed going through the working plantation and winery, learning about the plants, seeing the orchard, etc. Room was large and beautiful. We didn't mind that the room was away from the main buildings or that there were caterpillars and ants. After all, it is set on a working plantation with beautiful orchard. 2. Food in the restaurant was delicious, service accommodating. 3. Breakfast was outstanding: lots of fruits from the garden (how much more organic and local can you get!), delicious and extensive spread, beautiful breakfast space under the tree. It's like in the movies about Italy! Breakfast staffs made a highlight to our stay: they were prompt, attentive, and professional. 4. It is a good base to explore Etna and Taormina: away from the busy towns but still with beautiful view. I went on and on about price and the lack of service but given the standing of the resort, they are not acceptable as those are really basic and shouldn't even be discussed. I conveyed the same in the feedback form to the manager so, Steven, if you read this, you have a bit to go to make this a truly world class 5 star establishment!

Dear M. Baslerin, I wish to thank you for staying with us at Monaci delle Terre Nere during your last 4 nights in Sicily and for taking the time to comment on your stay. I have to admit I was a bit surprised reading certain comments as I found them a bit far from the actual reality. I thank you for considering us a 5 star resort, but as of now we are just a 4 star property, trying to offer 5 star accommodations and service. Our staff speaks well English, French, German and Spanish, but of course each team member is better in one language than the other, but cannot be considered limited in conversing in foreign languages. Concerning the water, we put a daily complimentary large bottle of mineral water in every single room, moreover the minibar is stacked with 2 additional bottles should our guests need or want more. In addition, I would like to inform you that our tap water is absolutely potable. I need to apologize for the information you felt was inaccurate, as after careful check, I noticed that before connecting with me, you indeed were sent a limited amount of details for the requests you had made. I will certainly ensure that all the staff members receive the appropriate level of training to allow them to reply to all our guests in a more precise way. As we are expanding the property after purchasing additional land, I am aware that some of the works may create some noises and I am sorry that this made your stay less peaceful. This being said, I was extremely happy to find out that the location was to your liking and that you were able to enjoy walks around the estate to discover our vines, plants and fruits. I am glad our rooms, our restaurant, our organic breakfast and our service satisfied you, and that you found it convenient to discover the nearby area from Monaci. As I always do, I will absolutely take all your comments and details into consideration in order to enhance the experience at Monaci, and hopefully soon be able to compete even more with 5 star establishments. Thank you again for sharing all your impressions and I hope you will return and find us improved in the future. Truly Yours, Steven Ceschia Director of Operations & Guest Services

We stayed for 2 nights - our first in Sicily. Mount Etna had just erupted and the views from our perfectly isolated and unexpectedly big cottage were spectacular. Take your walking shoes, the property is large and perfect for exploring. Staff are very friendly and clearly love their workplace. Our room had a log fire burner and came stocked with some wonderful wine made from grapes on the property, and an overflowing fruit basket. Breakfast up on the high terrace is something to linger over - we loved the tray of fresh fruits and vegetables and juicer for a DIY breakfast experience. Only comment - the rooms are all well spread out, but most overlook one or two others (from a distance). Only blackout blinds are available and we would have loved to be able to enjoy the views (and natural light) without worrying about scaring the neighbours! Overall, a wonderful experience and we will be back for sure.

Dear M. Klenks, Thank you very much for making Monaci delle Terre Nere your "home away from home" during the first part of your Sicilian vacation and for sharing your thoughts on the property. I am very happy to read that you were positively surprised by the setting, the views from the property and the size of our rooms and suites. I am glad you enjoyed our own production wines, our daily hand picked fruit in the room and our organic breakfast served on our panoramic garden. Your comment on our staff was the icing on the cake as I truly believe the care and attention of all the team members are the added value in any service related experience. I thank you again for taking the time to share your feedback and look forward to welcoming you again soon with us. Regards, Steven Ceschia Director of Operations & Guest Services
