God knows how many times I've been to the restaurant here. Why is it one of my favourite places to eat in the world. 1. The owners. They are Basque hospitality to the core. Fun, welcoming, patient, (my French is awful) and just plain lovely. 2. The location. Nestled in a wonderful village in the Atlantic Pyrenees. Vultures circle overhead, warblers sing from the bushes. Beautiful. 3. The food. When you eat at a restaurant enough your bound to get a bad meal.... or so they say. I've never had anything other than great food here. The confit is stunning, the scallops to die for... and the creme brulee with grand manier..... Enough said. It's simply lovely 💙
I've been to this restaurant many times over the years, but haven't been back for a couple of years as not in the area. It is as good as ever. Great quality food, expertly cooked, with a heavy dose of the local basque favourites. The whole menu is great, and inexpensive as well. The wine list features local wines plus really great house wines. The bar is a great place for a quiet beer, well stocked, and very smart. We really enjoyed the long, Sunday Lunch, (remember to book as it gets very busy with the locals, (always a good sign), as well as a number of evening meals. Finally the cherry on the top, is the staff, uber friendly, helpful and fun. Highly recommended.
My wife, Springer Spaniel and I stayed 3 nights in this wonderful hotel recently. Everybody was superbly helpful, especially in relation to sorting out suitable food for my wife who'd been ill. The food is outstanding and the room in the annex was spacious. The view was lovely, overlooking the Basque countryside. We will return next year and we cannot wait. Thank you to all at Eskualduna! Milesker.
My wife and I were visiting her family in the South West of France this past September and we wanted to explore St Jean Pied de Port before heading South to Spain. All of the hotels we were interested in in St Jean Pied de Port were sold out so we began to explore other options close by. Thanks to Trip Advisor we discovered this gem of a place and decided to spend a night here. Upon arrival we were greeted with smiles and joy from the entire staff (most of whom are family). We were given a great room and took advantage of the dinner that is included with the room at a certain price point. When the staff discovered that my wife was not only vegetarian but also gluten free they went far above and beyond to take care of her every need and make sure she had something delicious and appropriate for her dietary needs. We had such an amazing night we decided to forgo Spain and spend another night at the hotel and explore the nearby Pyrenees region. We discovered a fantastic mountainside restaurant (the name escapes me) and drove along the beautiful road that takes you up and through the Pyrenees. Upon returning to the Hotel we were again greeted as if we were part of the family and I took full advantage of the amazing pool and indoor spa area and unwound in the Jacuzzi and Sauna. We were terribly sad to leave as the Hotel and surrounding area are full of beauty and local charm and we had become so attached to the staff and the sweet little hotel Pug dog. I highly recommend this hotel in every regard. Nice, comfortable rooms, great restaurant, excellent, central location to many many locales and activities and a staff that is family and treats guests as if they were also a part of the family. There's a reason for so many 5 Star reviews and we feel honored to join those. We can't wait to return! Thanks…
Visited the restaurant last year and as back in the area visited again. Food just as good as last year, which is excellent. Simple yet great flavours. Also got to try new things. The lamb sweetbreads with peppers is superb and the Cafe Gourmand, perfection. Even though we could have gone to any restaurant in the area we visited it FIVE times in two weeks. That is how highly I rate it. The owners and staff made us feel at home and so welcome. We'll be back. If you want 3 star Michelin food maybe not for you. If you want superb ingredients, brilliantly cooked, with big bold flavours at a great price, this is the place to go.
Can't fault this place if you are looking for rural family attitude, location, and approach to life then this is your place. The village is so peaceful and yet it has options all around for a multitude of foods, activities, or you can just sit there and relax whilst soaking up the beautifully clean air and amazing natural scenery. If you can't unwind here then you are in big trouble.
Left it a bit late to book in this area of Pays Basque, but from what we know now this would have been our first choice. Prices as a two-star hotel this has five-star hospitality and first-class Basque cooking - plus a pool, sauna and gym. A warm welcome awaited us, all the staff treated the guests as friends and family - and perhaps they were as we had the impression that some were regular guests and some were locals come for a splendid meal. We stayed 4 nights, half-board - which is a really excellent deal, with assurance that unfinished wine bottles were held over from one dinner to another. We enjoyed local red, white and rose - to match the various dishes that were put before us from a fixed menu. We had a good room (18) in the hotel - the Annex was only a couple of minutes walk away and probably had the better views. We had opted to do without a car and chose this in part as it is close by the Osses-St Martin d'Arrossa Station. That is one stop from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port which is the end of the line from Bayonne on a train ride which is itself a delight as it snakes up the valley by the river. The train timetable is attached. We had day trips to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port (which had a lively weekend of music) and to Cambo-les-Bains (for Villa Arnaga and a pleasant town). Minor niggles: The wifi is not that good, and more could be provided about the local walks we discovered - perhaps a small local map could be drawn & printed. But all that is to nit pick - as we had very pleasant and wonderful holiday.…
In September a group of girl friends from Colorado spent 2 weeks hiking the Pyrenees. We stayed in the Hotel Eskualduna for 2 nights and had breakfast and dinner at the restaurant. They also made us lunches to take hiking. It was a fabulous trip. The restaurant served typical Basque country food, fresh and very tasty. The hotel rooms were large, comfortable and modern.
Side stay at the hotel but ate at the restaurant. Lovely fresh local food, big portions and excellent staff. The pigeon was gorgeous as was the Basque style veal. Equivalent of £27 per head including wine, coffee and aperitifs. As Arnie said 'I'll be back'
Visiting this region in mid August can be hectic and this hotel provide rest from the Hell on Earth that Saint-Jean is during a weekend. The rooms are basic and a little crowded but clean and quite since the railroad in front of the hotel is not yet operational. Parking is free and the breakfast basic Continental except for the wonderful home made marmalades. The wi.fi does not seem to work beyond the reception area, but the personnel were friendly and the hostess fabulous. Most clients seem to be French regulars and the place, particularly the restaurant, appears to be popular for families get aways on short vacations.
