God knows how many times I've been to the restaurant here. Why is it one of my favourite places to eat in the world. 1. The owners. They are Basque hospitality to the core. Fun, welcoming, patient, (my French is awful) and just plain lovely. 2. The location. Nestled in a wonderful village in the Atlantic Pyrenees. Vultures circle overhead, warblers sing from the bushes. Beautiful. 3. The food. When you eat at a restaurant enough your bound to get a bad meal.... or so they say. I've never had anything other than great food here. The confit is stunning, the scallops to die for... and the creme brulee with grand manier..... Enough said. It's simply lovely 💙
I've been to this restaurant many times over the years, but haven't been back for a couple of years as not in the area. It is as good as ever. Great quality food, expertly cooked, with a heavy dose of the local basque favourites. The whole menu is great, and inexpensive as well. The wine list features local wines plus really great house wines. The bar is a great place for a quiet beer, well stocked, and very smart. We really enjoyed the long, Sunday Lunch, (remember to book as it gets very busy with the locals, (always a good sign), as well as a number of evening meals. Finally the cherry on the top, is the staff, uber friendly, helpful and fun. Highly recommended.
My wife, Springer Spaniel and I stayed 3 nights in this wonderful hotel recently. Everybody was superbly helpful, especially in relation to sorting out suitable food for my wife who'd been ill. The food is outstanding and the room in the annex was spacious. The view was lovely, overlooking the Basque countryside. We will return next year and we cannot wait. Thank you to all at Eskualduna! Milesker.
My wife and I were visiting her family in the South West of France this past September and we wanted to explore St Jean Pied de Port before heading South to Spain. All of the hotels we were interested in in St Jean Pied de Port were sold out so we began to explore other options close by. Thanks to Trip Advisor we discovered this gem of a place and decided to spend a night here. Upon arrival we were greeted with smiles and joy from the entire staff (most of whom are family). We were given a great room and took advantage of the dinner that is included with the room at a certain price point. When the staff discovered that my wife was not only vegetarian but also gluten free they went far above and beyond to take care of her every need and make sure she had something delicious and appropriate for her dietary needs. We had such an amazing night we decided to forgo Spain and spend another night at the hotel and explore the nearby Pyrenees region. We discovered a fantastic mountainside restaurant (the name escapes me) and drove along the beautiful road that takes you up and through the Pyrenees. Upon returning to the Hotel we were again greeted as if we were part of the family and I took full advantage of the amazing pool and indoor spa area and unwound in the Jacuzzi and Sauna. We were terribly sad to leave as the Hotel and surrounding area are full of beauty and local charm and we had become so attached to the staff and the sweet little hotel Pug dog. I highly recommend this hotel in every regard. Nice, comfortable rooms, great restaurant, excellent, central location to many many locales and activities and a staff that is family and treats guests as if they were also a part of the family. There's a reason for so many 5 Star reviews and we feel honored to join those. We can't wait to return! Thanks…
Visited the restaurant last year and as back in the area visited again. Food just as good as last year, which is excellent. Simple yet great flavours. Also got to try new things. The lamb sweetbreads with peppers is superb and the Cafe Gourmand, perfection. Even though we could have gone to any restaurant in the area we visited it FIVE times in two weeks. That is how highly I rate it. The owners and staff made us feel at home and so welcome. We'll be back. If you want 3 star Michelin food maybe not for you. If you want superb ingredients, brilliantly cooked, with big bold flavours at a great price, this is the place to go.
