Detailed Reviews
The Michelin Guide reserves its highest, three-star rating for hotels and restaurants that are worth making a special trip just to experience a place. That's how we feel about Issy and the Firefly Bed and Breakfast. To us, the Firefly B&B (though we just call it Issy's) IS Vermont. Beautiful, cozy, warm, friendly, down to Earth and proudly rough around the edges, there is simply no place else we'd rather stay when we come to visit -- which we do at every opportunity. After graduating from Middlebury College, we've been staying with Issy for many years now and we'll continue to do so for as long as she is there. More than a proprietor, she is a master of hospitality, and now, we are honored to say, a friend. And as far as the location goes, from the brilliance of the stars at night to the smell of the air in the morning, the Firefly B&B is truly a soul-nourishing place to be. So whatever the season, whatever the reason, do yourself a favor and go. Like, right now.

We love the Firefly B&B and go back there every summer, partly because of the warm hospitality of its owner, Issy Link. If you are looking for an anonymous Holiday Inn kind of place – this is not it!
Issy treats her guests like treasured family members. Her home, the Firefly B&B is like a European Bed and Breakfast with the owner living on the premises. Issy is German and the European touches are everywhere from the fine china on the table to the perfect flowers on the deck.
Though not grand, the Firefly is a perfect size to hold Issy’s warm hospitality. The rooms are spotless, the beds comfortable, the view of the mountains incomparable and the food – extra wonderful.
When she says a full breakfast, she means toast, eggs, bacon or sausage, organic fresh fruit and juice, greens from her or her neighbor’s gardens, the best coffee, the freshest bread—all cooked with love and great skill. Her secret—she used to be a chef and she loves cooking. Both her love and her artistry are on display. The best French toast I ever had (made from fresh croissants) the best Eggs Benedict… I won’t give away the secret… and she is very accommodating for those of us with food allergies or on vegetarian diets.
We stayed upstairs and we were sharing a bathroom—Euro style— but the other guests were polite and sophisticated and there were no problems. There was plenty of hot water and clean towels for everyone.
I have to say my favorite thing about the Firefly— in addition to the food— is the location. In the heart of Vermont back country, we fell asleep under our quilts to the sound of bullfrogs and owls and woke up to rain on the tin roof. Heaven. jwb los angeles, CA

I love Firefly B&B.... I’ve been returning to this cozy B & B since 1999. Firefly B & B is the place my dreams are made of. Whether I arrive at Issy’s with my husband, my black lab or my horse, we are always made to feel welcome. I've stayed at Firefly in each season, and each stay was special. I feel right at home here. Of course, I'm a country girl at heart, and this place suites me fine! I love being here. Issy’s great hospitality, outstanding meals, European ambiance, spectacular vistas (everywhere you look, especially in the fall and winter) and cozy swimming hole keep bringing me back again and again
Regardless of the season there is always lots of ways to have fun at Firefly. In the winter, I’ve enjoyed snowshoeing and cross-country skiing. In the spring, it’s a great time to go hiking the Battail trail or Bristol Cliffs. And, of course, the summer and the fall offer some of the finest horseback riding in New England. I'm an avid horse person & have ridden miles and miles of the trails around Firefly & Lincoln. The trails are so much fun & the scenery is breathtaking! Whether I’m riding in the Green Mountain National Forest, along the Greene Road, or anywhere else around Lincoln, I feel like I am in heaven. It is truly one of my all time favorite places in New England to ride.
The Rustic Cabin is my favorite room to stay in! I like being set back in my own private space, away from the other guests. The few steps to the house is no big deal for me. I am able to start my day practicing yoga without any distractions. If I am staying at Firefly with my horse, he’s right outside the cabin, enjoying his stay as much as I am. It’s a great place where much fun is had by all!

Because we were booking within four weeks of our stay our choices were limited. My wife insists on a private bath and since the website describes the "Vermont Room" as having a private bath I went ahead and booked it. We arrived to find that in fact it's a bath shared with the owner and with the occupant of the cottage out back.
One other problem (less serious): She doesn;'t take credit cards, so you'll have to mail her a check for one night's stay to secure a reservation.
Other than the private bath issue it was fine. Beautiful spot, quiet & private up in the mountains.
Several listings have this B&B located in Bristol; it's actually up in Lincoln.

My husband and I thought a honeymoon involving our horses would be a great getaway, since horses is what brought us together in the first place. According to the website, there would be shelter and pasture provided for the horses. Sure, there was shelter, but only for her horses. Then, the pasture for our horses had cattle fence (maybe 2.5 feet?) and we were asked if our horses respected electric fence, and they do, except the next words out of the innkeeper's mouth was "Oh, it isn't electrified". The whole time I was worrying about when some thunderstorms hit (which they were supposed to that day) and my horses running blindly though wire.
It was rather warm when we arrived, but both of our horses are in good shape and we wanted to just go for a stroll down the trails (trails = dirt roads by the way, roads that Vermonters like to drive pretty fast on! It was funny because they wave as they are passing you on your horse doing about 40 mph on this little roads!) The innkeeper had the map for the trails, and she was reluctant to give them to me. She was like "Are you sure? It's awfully warm, you know you should let the horses settle in first" I was like "We would like to just go for a walk." She made us feel very uncomfortable. I kind of knew this might happen when I got the horses off the trailer and shavings came out along with them, and she commented "Oh, it looks like we are going to have to rake that up now."
As far as the actual accommodations go, the cabin is quite cute but not recommended for hot weather since there is no air conditioning (I don't think the main building has A/C either, but don't quote me on that). According to her website, it claims that if you rent the cabin you will have a private passageway into the back of the main building. This "private passageway" is nothing more than the back door to her house. By main building, she means her house. The bathroom she would like you to use it across the hall from her actual bedroom...just not accommodating at all! My husband and I felt she was watching our every move, constantly making sure we were not ruining something on her property like wayward teenagers. We left that day...we were not there more than a couple hours.

I was supposed to stay three days. I could tolerate the place only one. I found the innkeeper to be difficult and disagreeable. Although the website said the room was on the first floor, it was actually on the second floor, up a narrow staircase with an unstable hand rail. When I questioned this, the innkeeper said that was the first floor. The area one enters from the deck is the "ground floor." The innkeeper is European, and that is indeed the convention in Europe. She said I should have asked for clarification (but why would I think to do that?). She made critical remarks about my things (a basket with my notebooks and study materials as well as my suitcase and laptop case) and about my staying up late.
There were dirty dishes in the sink in the common area (kitchen/living room/dining room) when I arrived at 4:00. There were more dirty dishes (presumably the innkeeper's own dinner dishes, since I was the only guest) when I went to bed, and those plus the breakfast things still there at 11:00 the next morning.
The common area had a battery-operated ticking clock that was so loud I could hear it in my room upstairs. I asked if it could be disabled and was told that was impossible, that I would have to get used to it. When I asked at breakfast if the window next to the dining table could be closed (it was 45 degrees), the innkeeper closed it only reluctantly, reminding me that "this is Vermont, you know."
I was told to use my laptop only on battery, and to turn it off when I plugged it in to recharge it. I did that, but did not know that the wall switch in my room controlled all of the outlets, so that when I got up in the morning, I had no battery to work with.
The lighting was inadequate throughout, and there was no table suitable for writing except the dining table, right in front of the ticking clock (and with inadequate light for working). There was no comfortable chair in my room, only a hard rattan chair the wrong height for the very small table there.
I left after breakfast (having been required to pay the full reservation) because in order to escape the ticking clock and the surly innkeeper I would have been confined to my room, where there was no comfortable place to sit.

Now, the location is wonderful for this bed and breakfast. Close to hiking trails and Mount Abraham which my husband and I climbed. The area is beautiful and the towns quaint. The bed and breakfast, however, I wasn't entirely pleased with. First off, Issy advertised a room with a king bed. This room I booked for this reason. It wasn't a king, but two twins pushed together.
The "deluxe continental" was a bit meager. The way Issy describes it online was not how it is in reality. I wouldn't consider cheerios, raisin bran and mini wheats anything particularly special. There was one type of toast to choose from (or not choose I guess), and a tub of Greek yogurt in the center of the table. Sure this is great for when I'm at home but at every other bed and breakfast I've stayed at, there's been a lot more substance to their breakfasts. The hot breakfast wasn't even offered to us which was a disappointment.
Finally, the home was dirty. I don't know if the cleanliness is always to this standard or if it was due to her mobility issues, but I was pretty grossed out. The carpets were dirty and there were cobwebs everywhere, many still housing spiders. The smell of the place was pretty gross too.
I can't in good faith give Issy more than three stars. You were very kind, but I wasn't happy about the standards of your home.

Response from Marie-Louise L, Owner at Firefly Bed and Breakfast
Responded Nov 24, 2015
We will have to take this review simply " with a grain of salt" comparing them to all other 5 star rated review. Unfortunately I was somewhat handicapped with a severely sprained ankle and had to hire a cleaning lady for our Rooms. I was not able to do stairs to check on their work ! Cob webs are common and need to be removed frequently which we do almost daily but that does not a room DIRTY or smelly. We also never had a complaint about our Continental Breakfast or the fact that the king size bed is indeed two twins put together as we frequently get guests who need 3 single beds . This makes it possible to separate them. Last but not least : We fully realize that one cannot please everyone all the time. Sincerely Marie-Louise L.

Firefly is a beautiful island of serenity with a lot quality and charm. Issy is an amazing host and made us feel part of her family. Coming from NYC we truly enjoyed our extended weekend in the upscale wilderness of Vermont.

My girlfriend and I had a very nice experience staying in the "Rustic Cabin" at the Firefly B&B for one Saturday night in mid-December. Our main challenge was staying comfortable during a weekend with single digit high temperatures on Saturday and a snowstorm with 60mph wind gusts overnight. Issy was very accommodating, offering to have us stay in a vacant second floor house bedroom if we were too cold (including my dog). It turned out to not be necessary since the cabin was nice and toasty with the built-in heater and an additional space heater provided by Issy, but we very much appreciated the offer.
Speaking of Issy, she was an excellent host - our hot breakfast in the morning was wonderful and she is a fun person to have a conversation with (other past guests will know what I mean!). Be sure to keep Firefly and the rustic cabin on your short list of VT getaway options, we had a blast and will likely be back!

September, 2013: I'm a writer, artist and musician living in the southern Maine town of Berwick. I needed badly to get away for a few days from my work as picture framer and gallery manager in southern Maine and find a quiet, welcoming place in which to make serious progress on a book I'm writing. After surfing the Net for two days and coming up with nothing that appeared to fit my needs, I stumbled across Firefly Bed and Breakfast in Lincoln, Vermont. What really caught my attention and rekindled my latent poetic sensibilities was the image of the tiny writer's cabin in the back of the property, just 50 feet or so away from the main facility. Not only was its exterior beyond charming, its interior was absolutely captivating -- well designed, cozy and superbly equipped with everything a writer wishes he/she had while holed up gleefully in a writer's cabin. No bathroom, no TV and no WIFI -- all are fully accessible and always available in the main facility -- but for the serious writer, it was Nirvana to be free of the constant electronic temptations. My five days in the cabin were even more productive than I'd hoped. I want to assure you, though, that my pleasure with Firefly came not just from my stay in the cabin but from getting to know Issy, the proprietor. She was an absolutely ideal hostess -- full of wry humor, a tad irreverent when the situation called for it; wise and perceptive from her many years' experience as a B&B owner, private pilot, equestrian riding proprietor, screenwriter and transplant from a small, Wartime village near Hanover, Germany; and a fantastic chef -- delicious foods and beverages, elegantly presented. I had many rewarding conversations with Issy, talking at length about the Arts -- she loves Janice Joplin and the Squirrel Nut Zippers as much as Mozart and Beethoven -- small-town living, the excitement of traveling to nearby Montreal, and the intoxicating beauty of Lincoln, Vermont and surrounding countryside on the northern tip of Green Mountain National Forest. If the cabin isn't what you're looking for, then stay in one of the two fully equipped facilities in the main building -- really a beautiful home, so you'll FEEL very much at home there -- and the two rooms have their own private baths and WIFI to boot! I couldn't recommend Firefly Bed and Breakfast more. And Issy's two horses, Dude and Pride, love the place, too -- as much as you'll love them when seeing them up and begging for breakfast each morning, within full view of both the cabin and the main facility. Firefly? GO! You'll be ever so glad you did. And the rates are more than reasonable! -- Ross Bachelder of Artful Endeavors New England, Berwick, Maine.
