I had the pleasure of spending a few nights at the camp over New Years 2021 and it was one of the most memorable trips I've ever done. We booked the 4-day trip which turned out to be the perfect amount of time to drive out to the remote location and absorb the beauty of Morocco on the way. The camp and the surrounding sand dunes are breathtaking and the staff cooked amazing food with the bare infrastructure they had available. I would highly recommend this trip & the camp to anyone looking to absorb more of what Morocco has to offer besides the obvious hotspots.
We visited the camp run by Nick & Bobo in Sep last year actually, but had returned home to a very busy time and never managed to pen a review until now. I recall it was a long ride from Marrakech, you’d be picked up by 8-ish in the morning and barely reach in time to enjoy the sunset for an hour or two. We didn’t plan sufficiently ahead, but I wanted to visit the dunes having traveled a long way to Morocco, so we left our luggage with the riad in the city to do just one night in the camp. Don’t! The trips to and fro are lengthy, and your time in the desert would be limited to one evening and the morning after. Cater for two nights, unplug and soak in the experience if you can afford the time. If you fancy taking some local products home, there are stops along the way where one can purchase (and haggle over the price of) rugs, Argan oil products, including the amlou almond spread - yummy, pottery glazed in very distinctive colors, dates, etc. The ride to the camp is a journey in itself, and after M’Hamid the private 4x4 goes off road onto the desert for another hour or so before miraculously getting to the camp. We only wished we didn’t have to spend all that time again to return to the city =) Once at the camp, consider your F&B needs (alcohol inclusive) taken care of, and the team will happily bring you for a camel ride, sandboard-ing, a sunset tipple in the dunes, etc too. I personally recommend going by camel, otherwise the 4x4 remains available if one isn’t a fan of riding. I remember we visited in the first few days the camp reopened in Sep after summer, and other guests would arrive only several days later, so did not get to experience the night-time entertainment or the hospitality from Nick and Bobo I read so much about. We did have the entire camp to ourselves, and the time there was a unique experience for us accustomed to urban living and the tropics.…
A trip to Sahara Desert has long been in my bucket list. Nick, Bobo and his team really did an amazing job! From the moment we got on the Land Cruise, driving through the Atlas Mountains only to be astonished by the breathtaking valleys and pikes, staying overnight at a cosy Kasbah and finally going off-road to the Camp, there was not a moment to be bored. Nick has been very responsive and informative. The driver was wonderful, and the camp staff members were very attentive with hospitality. Regarding the camp itself, the tent was quite spacious with en-suite shower and toilet. I especially liked the bed and duvet. Food was great, at lunch they serve grilled skewered meat with fresh salads and dinner tagine changes every day. They even served pasta, I was surprised. As for activities, kids had a blast, digging the sand for a treasure hunt, sandboarding, camel riding, and running around the camp. The spectacular sunset at the top of a sand dune is a must see, too. During the day you can relax at the camp, either having a Moroccan beer at the bar or lie in the hammock for a nice nap with your spotify on. At night, you are going to be fascinated by the countless stars in the sky and lose yourself in observing the constellations. I stayed for two nights at the camp but wish I had stayed longer. Overall, a very special experience of a lifetime, and the whole camp team really delivered it. Well done! …
Staying at the camp was the highlight of our trip to Morocco. The staff at the camp are attentive, without being intrusive, friendly, up for a good laugh/joke and looked after every detail. Our driver, Jamal, was great. He has a great sense of humor, very safe driver and shared some great Moroccan music with us. There is as little or as much for you to do at the camp. We enjoyed hanging out in the hammocks and chilling as well as hiking the dunes. Sundowners at the top of the dunes is magical....unplug and enjoy!
My daughter (30-ish) and I (much older) spent a charming, entertaining, captivating time at Erg Chigaga! Amidst our visits also to Marrakesh, Todra Gorge, and ChefChoaouen, it was a stand-out. To get there efficiently, we left our Marrakesh hotel at 3:30 a.m. and flew on Royal Air Maroc through Casablanca to Zagora to be met at the airport by Jamal (from Erg Chigaga). Then the fun began. He drove us (in his wonderful Toyota SUV with leather seats and the works) about three hours to Mhamid, where the pavement ended, and then another two through the desert. He made the entire time interesting--stories, stops to see pottery made, one to buy long scarves to tie around our heads & to lunch. Even after such a long day, we saw the camp and were totally energized. Charming greeters, a beautiful tent, ways to relax and recover and then a delightful hike up the tallest dune to watch sunset (complete with happy hour treats with the staff.) Dinner later was with families from London and Italy; and we could not have had more fun: great food, good wine, gracious service, charming stories. The desert gets very dark at night so we slept like rocks and awakened to a gorgeous sunrise and a staff member at our tent inquiring about our interest in coffee, fresh hot water, etc. My goodness--such pampering. My daughter and I had a wonderful time in all of Morocco but the one truly magic spot was Erg Chigaga. I'm totally in love now with deserts and most of all Berbers. What charm and graciousness.…
