Hotel Royal is a genuinely affordable hotel, but I did not expect that its service and equipment are also just up to the level of a budget hotel. I needed to sit at the lobby for 30 minutes to wait for the reception desk to dig out my reservation. It is very interesting: the man said, "oh, we cannot find your booking" (then he remained silent). "Could you help me to check, please?", I asked. He said okay but he said it would take about 30 minutes and he asked me to sit in the lobby to wait for 30 minutes, without even giving me a bottle of water! Then, he just stood idle there. I needed to walk to the front desk to ask him to check again (I was the only guest checking in for the entire 30 minutes but he simply won't have checked my booking if I had not asked!). I would be perfectly fine with this quality of service if it had just been a three-star hotel but it is such a disappointment when it is a five-star hotel. Additionally, the room was old and under-maintained; the help desk did not help at all; room equipment was super outdated (great to visit if you want some atmosphere of 2000). Overall, I would not suggest having a five-star expectation on Hotel Royal.…
Been a while since we visited this wonderful hotel, nestled in Macau’s lovely historic district away from the hustle and bustle of other parts of the city. Hotel as always is immaculate and services impeccable. We dined at its renowned Catalpa Garden Shanghainese Restsurant, never disappoint. One of the best Shanghainese restaurants in the region and a must visit for those traveling to the city.
From 28 December 2019 to 14 January 2020, my wife and I organised an interesting 18 day tour best described as an Asian smorgasbord of familiar and new places, to celebrate our 40th wedding anniversary. Familiar to us were Hong Kong and Singapore with Macau, Taiwan and Laos the new places we visited. Many Australian travellers chose to do a day trip to Macau from Hong Kong rather than stay overnight. We wanted to experience a bit more of the real Macau and with our busy schedule of visiting 5 places in a short space of time we settled on a stay of 2 nights. As it turned out we could easily have enjoyed at least a week. In researching where to stay we looked long and hard on the internet at the huge array of good hotels in Macau and we decided to go with Hotel Royal. Our visit got off to a great start with the hotel’s complimentary shuttle bus taking us to the hotel from the Macau Ferry Terminal. Many of Macau’s hotels offer this service and it is good that Hotel Royal is one of them. As our arrival at the hotel was 10 am ,our room was not ready. A friendly staff member suggested we drop our luggage off with the Concierge and do some touring and come back after 2 pm to formally book into our accommodation. During this time we witnessed some iconic sights including the famous Ruins of St Paul, the Senado Square and the magnificent Leal Senado Building. On our return to the hotel we were greeted by a couple of large tour groups booking in, that kept the reception staff very busy. We waited patiently until it was our turn to be served. What a surprise as we were given an upgrade to a Premier Suite in recognition of our 40th wedding anniversary. That was a nice gesture from the hotel management. More was to follow. When we arrived in our room there was a lovely vase of red roses on the sideboard with a special congratulatory message from the management. We felt like royalty. The hotel indeed lived up to its name. Our guestroom was pleasing. The centrepiece was a comfortable King size bed. Beside the bed near the window was a Chaise Sofa, perfect to put one’s feet up for a well earned rest after a hard day’s travelling. There was an elegant sideboard incorporating the television and refrigerator. The small oval writing desk was ornate. A feature of the Premier Suite was the complimentary mini bar offering Macau Beer, soft drink, orange juice and potato chips. The bathroom was well appointed with a marble wash basin and a shower over a plunge bath. A highlight for us on one of the evenings was a delightful Portuguese meal in the hotel’s well respected Fado Restaurant. The food and wine were fabulous and service was impressive. When in Macau one has to experience the famous Portuguese egg tart and Fado has a great warm version for dessert accompanied by coffee ice cream. Yummy! By day Fado converts into the breakfast room and a very enjoyable breakfast it was too, offering a good range of food to start the day right. We were very impressed by the hotel’s friendly and efficient staff. Nothing was too much trouble for them. We needed an electric extension cord for one of the appliances to use in the room and the Concierge was able to help us out by lending us one for our entire stay. We really appreciated that. Hotel Royal is situated on Estrada da Vitória near the centre of Macau and close to the Guia Lighthouse which is well worth a visit. The entrance to the hotel is enhanced by the beautifully manicured Vasco da Gama Gardens. A good photo opportunity is Vasco da Gama’s statue with Hotel Royal providing an imposing backdrop. Our short stay in Macau included celebrating the New Year 2020 in style with midnight fireworks on New Year’s Eve 2019 in the Vida Rica bar at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel beside Nam Van Lake. That occasion and the wonderful anniversary gesture greeting us at Hotel Royal made for a most memorable visit. We found Hotel Royal to be a delightful hotel choice for our stay in Macau. We would recommend the hotel to travellers once overseas travel is resumed after the Covid 19 virus restrictions.…
Have stayed at Hotel Royal Macau a time or two each year for probably 5-6 years now and have come to appreciate the consistent good rooms, good service and very good room rates on offer at this hotel at Jardim Vasco da Gama on the Macau Peninsula. Recently stayed for one night midweek during the Coronavirus Outbreak. As was the case with pretty much all hotels around Macau, their small casino, Mocha was closed. As were their restaurants, including the very good FADO Portuguese restaurant, one of my quiet favourites in Macau. Shuttle service was adjusted as well, altering its route from the MAC ferry terminal, which is presently closed to the HZMB (new bridge), the only border presently open between HK and Macau. Good on them for this adjusted shuttle service. As for my room, it was business as usual. Size and space is good, decor is nice, bed soft and comfortable. Room includes expected desk, rolling chair, flat-screen TV, fridge, kettle, safe, ironing board, good lighting, A/C and wifi. There is a seating chair that is comfortable, bathroom is spacious with modern fixtures and set of toiletries. Location is very good if you want to be near the Macau World Heritage area. You are 6-7 minutes away from Senado Square and the Ruins of St. Paul's. Walk behind the hotel and you are 6-7 minutes away from the Guia Fortress. You are also just a few minutes from the overshadowed St. Lazarus district, which has the best European streetscapes around Macau. There are some great coffee shops nearby, affordable local restaurants as well as a few good Portuguese and Macanese restaurants nearby. In the end, Hotel Royal Macau remains one of my personal favourite hotels in Macau. At their room rates, they offer the best rooms I have found around Macau and the location is very favourable for those interested in sightseeing around the city centre. On these basis, I offer high recommendation for this particular property in Macau.…
This is a very nice hotel away from the glitz of the casino areas. The area has nice shopping and historical sites within easy walking distance. The pool was nice, the staff was friendly and helpful. The only issue I had was that there are fewer towels than in most other nice hotels, only a bath towel but no wash cloths or hand towels. If you are interested in gambling they do have a free shuttle to that area, but they do not have an airport shuttle.
