Detailed Reviews
This was by far one of the most beautiful places I've been to in terms of surroundings. Not only is it right on the lake but the views of the Alps are outstanding. The house itself is beautiful. As we were there as a family, we took up all the rooms and had it to ourselves. We felt extremely comfortable. Every need was met and we had a relaxing time, enjoying the garden, the lake, and the mountains. The only suggestion for improvement is on the breakfast: the bakery was fresh one day and not the next and there was no attempt to leverage on the local specialties. All breads for instance, were sweet including a muffin assortment, which we weren't expecting in Italy. We highly recommend this place and intend to visit often!

Sometimes you really don't appreciate how wonderful a place will be until you get there. We were bowled over by the magnificent gardens leading down to the lake with its fabulous magnolia trees in full bloom and the backdrop of the snow capped mountains in the distance. Julia looked after us beautifully. She speaks French and some English too. She told us about the local restaurants and where to get the ferry to the Isola Bella. This small island on the other side of the lake was well worth the trip with a palazzo surrounded with unique gardens and white peacocks lying or walking elegantly around the grass. We met the owner who's grandfather had built the main house and gardens. He was charming and full of local knowledge. It was fascinating to hear about he history of Polidora and what additions he has made to the botanical gardens. We had a wonderful stay and definitely plan to return.

We stumbled upon this delightful property by accident almost, and it was an absolute delight staying here.
The photos just don't do it justice - the location is amazing, the botanical garden breath-taking and the views of the lake, simply stunning. Oh, and there's red squirrels too! It is effectively like you're part of a Fitzgerald story and are somehow lost it in...
We bumped into Gianluca, the owner, who was so lovely and took us for a tour of the gardens telling us the stories behind the trees and making us feel very welcome. He is a fascinating character and a very nice person.
Giulia looked after us very well too! She made sure we had all we needed, made as a delicious breakfast and booked us into a very nice local fish restaurant. She was so sweet and helpful and we couldn't have asked for more.
Overall, we had a lovely time and the only regret was not staying for longer. Will definitely return! Thank you for everything!

Our expectations of the Polidora B&B were high after reading the reviews but I must admit I was disappointed not with the location or the beautiful grounds but with the accommodation and lack of facilities for example no full length mirror in room or tea or coffee facilities . The breakfast was poor ,stale bread rolls and burnt croissants on both mornings with a few slices of ham and meagre bit of cheese with a few cereals thrown in . One of the nights the owners dogs were barking outside our bedroom for well over an hour this was after midnight . It is a lovely place but for 150 euros a night it lacked in quality .

Response from GianLuca S, Owner at Polidora B&B
Responded Apr 4, 2013
dear Amanda, I am very sorry to read that your experience with Polidora was poor. Roberta, who was in charge of your breakfast at the time of your visit, is very keen on making pies and muffins, which look almost professional. I do not know what went wrong, but we'll do our best to improve the breakfast. About our doggies, we never let them out in the garden alone at night: we know that Jack Russels can be VERY noisy. Unfortunately on Sept. 22nd, we had to attend to our niece wedding on the other side of the lake. We were unaware we had guests at the B&B, which is about 400 ft from our home, and we thought it was too much to let them locked in from 4pm to 3am. In the future, we'll take care to note when the B&B is busy, so that our Guest don't get annoyed by our doggies. -GianLuca

Polidora exceeded all our expectations - extremely comfortable rooms, beautifully renovated. The owner was delightful and staff couldn't be more helpful. All in an idyllic lakeside setting, with a lovely walk along a kilometre of shoreline. Many interesting botanical specimens. Dog friendly!

This B&B lived up to all our expectations. High quality accomodation in a beautiful park beside Lake Maggiore. Plenty to do and see around the lake but well worth spending a day just relaxing and swimming in the park and chilling in Cerro. But the best thing was the hospitality shown by the owner Gianluca and the manager Giulia.

The location is just stunning.
The villa is a masterpiece and the landscape makes it worthy to be mentioned in the UNESCO listing.
The owner is incredibly kind and the manager, a newly hired 20yo girl named Giulia is very sweet and helpful.
Nothing to say about the overall quality of the stay, which was unforgettable.
A very weak point is the breakfast, that doesn't match with the standard of a structure which defines itself bed AND BREAKFAST.
Just fresh bread and fresh croissant from the local bakery would make this place the best B&B ever.

A unique piece of earth! Majestic trees of an immense variety from many parts of the world, space in abundance to walk, to rest, to have a swim and to enjoy the breathtaking views of the Borromean islands and the shore behind when the sun sets. We stayed three nights and are grateful to the owners who passionately preserve this paradise for sharing it this way instead of commercially expoliting the potential of this piece of land. The service was excellent! It is a fantastic place to explore the Borromean islands, botanic gardens and other places close by.

Polidora is located on a private estate on the lake. It has a long stretch of private lakefront just for guests. Wonderful gardens and flora make this estate a photographer's dream. The service was fantastic. Nicoletta is a gracious host and very generous with her time. Breakfast was delicious with a good variety of food. We were provided with very useful information on day trips, directions, maps... I would highly recommend staying at Polidora!

I have never written a bad critique before in my life but this place is just unbelievable. We stayed in this place last summer. It was the worst time I (43) ever had in any hotel. The hotel is in a former cow stable according to the girl who serves breakfast. The rooms are very dark, the breakfast is pathetic and the gardener is living in an adjourned building and very noisy in the night. The hotel is advertised to be located in a park which is correct, however, as we were instructed upon arrival, guests are not supposed to leave the path when walking into the park and are not supposed to come too close to the main manor where the owners seem to live. We (my sister, my cousin and I (three mothers with children) went to the beach for a swim. There was no-one else but soon after arrival the son from the main manor came to check out on us with his dogs. The breakfast girl told us back at the house that we must inform the owners beforehand if we have someone visiting us (my sister and cousins who stayed somewhere else). The next morning we were informed that my sister and cousins were actually not allowed to come onto the premises again. It is unclear for us why this was the case. We are all normal people with normal jobs and normal children and there were no other guests than us. We (my husband, our children, 6 and 2 and I) and my parents in law in their late sixties had booked two of the three rooms and one room was empty when we were there. I do not have the slightest clue what this hotel is about. It is in no way welcoming and guest are given the impression to be in the way and imposing upon the owners who reside in the manor which is between the hotel and the lake. After we were informed that my sister is not supposed to visit us at the hotel we left from there immediately against our original plan and will certainly never go back there.

Response from GianLuca S, Proprietario at Polidora B&B
Responded May 25, 2016
Dear Customer, we were expecting your review, although it came almost a year late. I'm sorry that your stay has been so negative, we usually do our best to satisfy our guests and give them the best experience possible. I will try to answer to all your points, to clarify the situation: 1. The villa is a separate entity from the Polidora B&B. The park measures 70.000 square meters and the villa occupies a very small portion of it. For privacy reasons that very small area is not a part of the itinerary available for our Guests. Apart from this everyone is free to go have a swim on the lake or wander around in the garden as long as they wish. 2. Our premises are strictly reserved to our guests. Italian law prescribes that every guest must be registered and reported to the "Carabinieri". It is also a matter of responsibility, because if one of your nephews should have injured themselves on our property, insurance would not cover the damage and the responsibility would rely on Polidora B&B. 3. I was by chance on vacation in the same days of your stay, and believe me I don't have the habit to check on our guests. I was simply taking the dogs for a walk in the park, two wonderful Jack Russels and a very friendly Terrier mix. I am sorry if they have disturbed you in any way. Kind regards, Gianluca Sarto
