JOIA Paraiso by Iberostar is celebrated for its spacious and well-designed rooms, although some guests find the seating uncomfortable and the marketing calls intrusive. While the value for money has been questioned due to aggressive sales and extra fees, the hotel's location is widely appreciated for activities and events like scuba diving and weddings.
The cleanliness of the property consistently earns high marks, as does the quality of amenities and food. Service at the hotel is noted for its attentiveness and warmth, and the vibrant atmosphere, complete with varied entertainment, contributes to the overall appeal for many guests.

Hotel's Favorite
So many resorts share the same beaches, the same water, the same ocean, the buildings are constructed similarly, the weather is the same, so then what makes the difference between resorts? The difference is the people, the staff, and how they make you feel. At Grand Paraiso, they make you feel so welcome. The magic comes from the staff, not just the resort.
I have been to other Iberostar Grand resorts, and they use WhatsApp to communicate between the guests and the butlers. So, I was a little concerned when we got to Iberostar Grand Paraiso, that we would have a team of butlers, but no way of using WhatsApp to get in touch with them. There was no need, these guys were always in the lobby of our building. We were in building 71, directly in front of the ocean. They would address us by name every time they saw us, ask how they could help, what we needed, how is everything going, did we need anything in our room? Did we need a ride anywhere, how was dinner last night? Were we set with our dinner reservations that night? Did we have any special requests for dinner? Our Butlers made a good vacation great. A shout-out to Ruben, Muriel, Luis, Antonio, and Gustavo. An example, one afternoon, my girlfriend wanted to see the Coati (kind of like a Mexican Raccoon), our butler told us where there was a family, got a golf cart and drove us over there, and then walked us down the path to see the animals. He explained to her different things about the animals. An example of going above and beyond.
The Paraiso Grand was amazing and didn’t disappoint at all. We enjoyed everything about the Grand. We ate at every restaurant, and the food and portions were terrific. The feeling in the restaurants is that it is more than eating, you are “dining” at the Grand. The Italian restaurant was the best with some of the tastiest Italian creations, followed by the Japanese. The chefs at the Japanese restaurant put on quite a show, and we enjoyed the people who were at our hibachi table. The food just kept coming, so be prepared to eat a lot of great-tasting food at the Japanese. The French restaurant was also very tasty, the portions were a little small, but we had more than enough that we didn’t leave hungry. We ate at Tony’s, and I wasn’t impressed with my Ribeye, it was a little too fatty. I prefer more of a marbled cut. I also added the lobster tails, and they were so good. We did have the steak tartar as an appetizer, and that was off the charts. I would order the tenderloin over the ribeye on my next trip. We only ate dinner one night at the buffet, but we could see every day they would post the theme for that night. They changed the theme every night. You could skip all the restaurants and just eat at the buffet, and I think you would be very happy. The wide variety of choices would satisfy everyone. I thought that the food could be a little hotter (temperature wise), as I like my food hot, not warm.
Let’s talk about the beach. Just Amazing. The beach was so pretty, the water was warm, and there was always the ability to get seats/loungers on the beach. Every day, they would run a sand vacuum across the beach, cleaning up all the seaweed. Very clean, the beach was picture-perfect. It was so relaxing to sit on the beach and just listen to the waves crashing. Since we were members, we had access to the Star Prestige beach area. We would get a cabana on the beach, and our server was Manuel. He attended to everything we needed, our drinks, lunch, towels. He was another example of staff who couldn’t do enough for you to have a great vacation. He was very attentive. We did go to the pool, and there was music and activities every day. It was a fun and happening area. In addition, there was a quiet pool towards the front of the resort separated by a building, that was extremely quiet. We never had a problem getting chairs at the pools.
The resort had entertainment in various forms every night. At the lobby bar, there was always someone singing or playing an instrument. The bartenders were great and made amazing drinks. It was a great before and after-dinner location. Looking around the lobby bar area, you could tell that the crowd was a little older. Then there were nightly shows in the Lobby Garden or by the pool area depending on the weather. These were about 45 minutes and very entertaining, professional, and enjoyable.
We had selected an Oceanfront Butler suite, and the room was great. The room could have a few more electrical outlets, but we brought a power strip to plug all our chargers into. The view from our balcony was like a postcard, no complaints. I could still hear the waves crashing on the beach, it was so relaxing. The maids were great, and they did a turndown service every night. The bed was extremely comfortable, and they had a pillow menu to select the kind of pillow that was to your liking.
I can’t say enough how helpful every single person at this resort has been. My only regret about our vacation was that we only stayed 7 days, next time we plan on staying for 10 days.

Everything about this resort experience was exceptional. The staff were all pleasant, extremely helpful, knowledgeable and fun to interact with. The rooms were modern and comfortable with lots of space. Every area of the resort was spotless. There were so many staff. Landscape was beautiful and so well taken care off. Early every morning the beach was raked and any seaweed that washed up, which was not much, was immediately removes. Fresh towels were always available and the beach and water were amazing. My husband and I golfed several times and everything about the course was exceptional. The course was tough but fun and was impeccable! We had two complimentary rounds as we stayed 11 days but paid a greatly reduced rate for further rounds as we were staying at the Grand. This was our first time at the Iberostar Grand but have been to many all inclusive resorts in versions places and will most definitely be returning. The food was first class.

From the minute we entered the gates of the Iberostar, we just knew this was going to be epic. The shuttle dropped us off at the lobby and the bellhop greeted us by name as we approached the podium and we entered the beautifully serene atrium in the heart of the lobby, someone says "Welcome Home" and hands us each a sparkling wine spritzer while we checked in and we were off to the races.
Upon entering our room, which was appointment to the utmost comfort, we were greeted by our personal concierge Marianna, who stocked our mini bar with whatever we wanted and kept us on track the entire week we were there. After that, we wanted to explore the outdoor area. Winding through the beautiful main hall of the resort, we exited down to the finely manicured outdoor veranda that leads to the two main pools. One is dedicated to those who enjoy quiet. The other is the epicenter of activity and overlooks the beach and ocean. The entertainment team led by Oscar, Adrian, Angel and Aaron are by far the maestros of their craft. They were everywhere, making sure you were having a good time without being pests about it. Pool games that you compete with the other guests twice a day, beach volleyball, ping pong, hosting many events at night including karaoke, the Star Band which was always entertaining and many cultural shows which was a breath of fresh air to not Americanize everything.
We wanted to go to a place that embraced their culture and would bring us along for the ride. The pride they have in their Mexican heritage and culture is as clear as the waters that wash upon their shores. This goes for the food and drink too. Sure, we enjoyed the Japanese restaurant but the Caribbean restaurant and the buffets are some of the best meals I've had in a long time and they incorporated so much of the local ingredients to give the whole culinary experience a zing of authenticity. I could go on and on but it would be hard to find better staff, environment, entertainment, food/drink quality and management at a similar price anywhere in the tropics.

Upon check-in to the grand, we were greeted with great front desk staff and champagne. The rooms are comfortable and very eco friendly; the rooms ac shuts off when there is no motion in the room and for some reason all the lights in the room turn on at 0830am.
The pools at the grand are lovely but the pool water in january is cold and not many people were swimming around. The pool bartenders and servers are very attentive.
Other than the pool and the beach, there are not any activities at the grand which are free; yes they have parasailing and jet skiing (for a fee) but they do not have bicycles to ride around or leisure activities that I have participated in at other resorts. Really, all there is to do at the grand resort is wake up, eat, lay by the pool or beach, eat again then sleep. It got boring towards day 3 honestly. I asked if there were bikes I could take to ride around the resort and I was told "no they are only for the bike tours". I asked if there were other activities and instead of being told the activities, I was told to download the iberostar app and view activities there.
For the amount of money spent for seven days, I would expect more leisure activities and service. The entertainment staff was great, but again, its activities around the pool and beach. I would have liked to see more leisure activities.
The food was great and the service at the restaurants were top notch.
If you are going with family and kids in their 20's+ I recommend going to maya resort rather than grand, there are more activities and people their age.

Me and my wife stayed in the ocean front suite at the Grand. This was my second visit to the Grand, some things were better than the last and some things were not. Needless to say our stay was still worth rating of 5 stars.
Check in was a little weird because instead of going to the desk we were sat in the lobby where Eric began trying to sell extra services. He bungled his chance to set us up with star prestige and maybe even a membership. Most people just want to get checked in and to the room so they can mosey over to the beach or grab a bite to eat. Back in 2017 we were greeted with a towel and a drink upon arrival and sent to the desk for checkin. This time we got a towel and were sent to the lobby to speak with a salesman.
Nevertheless, the staff is the best asset for the hotel because of their professionalism and top notch service which cater to the guest every needs. I don't remember everyones name however some stick out like Arturo, Hector, Gerardo, Brenda, Ellena (room turndown), America, Octavio the omelet chef, and many more. Our housekeeping staff was amazing, the waiters and staff in the buffets and restaurants are also amazing, entertainers were awesome, and our butlers catered to our every need.
The food is top notch and may be a little over the top for the average person. They have something for everyone in the buffet at breakfast, lunch, and dinner. I was looking forward to a more traditional Mexican cuisine for the buffets instead of the Brazilian or Italian night. We really enjoyed the club sandwich from room service on the beach two days in a row. I feel bad that i cannot remember the guys on the beach but there were 3 to 4 hombres who really treated us like royalty and were beyond great. Overall, the food is good and the best thing is its safe. I ate plenty of seafood and no problems, its all fresh. The alcohol was also safe, my wife drank plenty.
I'll definitely go back to the Grand and get another ocean front suite. We really can't thank the staff enough for their service because they went above and beyond to make sure we had an amazing stay. This is a beautiful hotel inside and out, its truly a unique and majestic property.

The Grand exceeded my expectations!
Pros:The service is more than top notch. They constantly ask you if you would like a drink on the beach, each employee is willing to greet you or help in any way, there is a turn down service each night where they turn down the sheets for you on your bed that they just made up hours ago.
The food is too notch, fresh and creative at each restaurant and at the buffet. We live in a big city and eat out often. This place rates high in my book!
The beach was beautiful and I found a place to lay out every day. There were 4 of us and there was plenty of room in Feb. In addition to the beach, there is a quiet pool with 2 hot jacuzzis and one regular pool and a party pool with a bar, regular pool and jacuzzis.
The architecture and art was over the top. I spent a couple of hours looking at all the art one day. This place is gorgeous from every angle
Very clean. I am a germaphobe and health care worker. Hand sanitizer also placed outside buffet area, small hand towels used to fry hands in restrooms.
First class with eco-friendly efforts. Very little plastic used. Very conscientious. Bring a water bottle. I used mine daily.
We stayed by the quiet pool. View was gorgeous and I appreciated the quiet at night.
Close to lindo and Maya sister hotels so if you had family with kids they could easily stay there where there are lots of fun things for kids and you are a very close walk to them. Maya beach front 30 sec walk from Grand.
Golf and fitness classes were great, very professional instructors for fitness classes.
Cons: Had to pay for all water sports, no paddle boards as advertised. Bring a boogie board if you like. No snorkeling off the beach and a bit rocky, but can easily swim out without water shoes.

We were fortunate to spend a week at the Iberostar Grand Paraiso being pampered, served and entertained by a fantastic group of staff. The hotel is luxurious and wonderfully designed.
The cleaning staff ensure that nothing is out of place and not a spec of dirt or dust is evident. Our butler Victor and the staff that restocked the fridge and bar area made sure that we had everything we needed in our rooms. Victor even had wine and a bubble bath drawn for us in time for our return from dinner.
The bar staff at each bar are very friendly and able to mix up a fantastic cocktail for any tastes using top shelf booze. This goes for all the food options as well, whether it be at breakfast, lunch (inside or at the pop up bbq) or at dinner either at the restaurants or the buffet. Expect to eat very well.
The short walk between your room, the pool and the beach make it very easy to move around throughout the day which is very nice if you intend to engage in the numerous activities put on by the entertainment team. Angel, Adrian, Oscar, Aaron, Daniel, Jonathan and Brian (to name a few) host all sorts of skill games, chance games and team sports(typically with a Mexican twist). Additionally walking and bike tours of the property(bike with Angel is highly recommended) as well as cooking and liqueur seminars.
Make sure to download the Iberostar phone app to keep tabs on what is scheduled and when.
Being at the premier hotel for the entire resort means you have access to a number of other amenities. We would recommend taking advantage of the fitness classes put on at the very modern gym. The instructors, including but not limited to Kieke put together great work outs. We tried the Kick boxing, TRX, and a few others. We also highly recommend the coffee shop located in the Mayan.
This was our first time visiting the resort but can understand why many of the people we spoke with had been there before.

From your arrival through your departure the staff of the Grand can not be anymore accommodating. In particular Oscar and Ernesto at the StarPrestige beach area are the best. Together they ensure that anything and everything is absolutely perfect. They are never rushed or hurried with you and from morning until evening they care for you and your family with excellent service.
Our [sic] “Maid” Maria was pleasant and outstanding each and every day.
Also the Concierge, wait staff, Bar Tenders and Som in all the restaurants and at all the bars were all attentive and ensured every day, every drink and every meal was thoroughly enjoyable.
Some of the changes that Iberostar has implemented over the past year could be improved upon. I understand and appreciate their mission and the Wave of Change and focus on Sustainability. But the new soaps, shower gel and shampoo are sub par surely not appropriate for a 5 Star Hotel. Bring back the L’Occitane soap, just figure out how to do it in a more responsible manner. As they did with their seafood, vegetables and other foods.
Also, I personally would like a better wine list, but the current one is OK, not great but OK.
All in all an outstanding resort. We will be back. And thank you to Oscar and Ernesto and all the staff you are the best!

The resort is beautiful! the rooms are awesome with the exception of the fact that the lights and air conditioner are controlled by motion sensors, therefore, it got really hot during the night. After discussing the issue with our butler, he had the motion sensor's bypassed fixing the problem.
Our butler was Luis and he was fantastic, everything we asked for he delivered!
The COVID-19 protocol at the resort is excellent, everyone, even the gardeners wear masks and everywhere you look someone is cleaning something. COVID testing was very easy!
The resort is spotless.
Service at the pool is excellent and the servers work very hard, as do the entertainment staff.
Service at the main bar in the lobby was somewhat lacking, we frequently had to ask to have our drinks refilled and several times we were served warm beer and wine.
The food could have been much better. All of the restaurants were not open and the ones that were open seemed to be lacking. We were able to get into Toni's on our first night there, I had a tiny little lobster tail and my husband has salmon, the salmon was really good. Breakfast was generally good. Our best dinner meal was room service, I had salmon, my husband had steak.
Our main turn off was the pressure to listen to a sales pitch about an Iberostar membership, we were almost made to feel guilty for refusing. We were on vacation, not there to spend a couple of hours listening to someone tell us about something we were clearly not interested in. Just be aware that this will happen and be prepared to say no if you are not interested.

WOW.... that about wraps up my experience at Grand Paraiso in one word. We were at the resort the second week in November and had a fantastic time. The resort is exceptional in every sense of the word.
In this time of Covid 19 I want to say that we are a 60 year old couple and we felt VERY safe at the resort due to all their precautions. in fact we felt much safer at the resort, airport and transfer van than we do at our local establishments in the USA. Each time you enter a restaurant you must have a mask and sanitize your hands. The tables are meticulously sanitized. There is no self serve food handling anywhere in the resort. Also the resort is not at capacity and the staff corrects Unsafe Covid behavior. An example is the swim up bar was temporarily closed after a group of people were gathered way to closely singing - the staff made a good call and nobody missed a drink as the staff just brought them from another nearby bar.
We stayed beachfront in building #71. What can I say? The room was gorgeous and well appointed. The bed was so comfortable. But let me giv a shout out to the best staff on the planet. Too many to mention individually, but the Butler staff was amazing. They learned your name quickly and offered assistance all the time. If they were concerned you might need something they would find you on the beach. each time we left the room we saw one of the butlers who always asked how are stay was going and if there was anything we needed. The other building #71 rock stars are the housekeeping staff - it's like they knew when you wouldn't be in the room and they would have it sparkling clean when you returned. And the daily turn down service was a luxurious touch. Great job Bldg #71 staff - you all are the reason we will be back in the spring.
Th beach is beautiful as is the pool and all the surrounding amenities. If you're afraid about too much walking, don't be! Everywhere you need to go the staff has plenty of six seat electric carts for transportation. We never had to wait more than two minutes for a rode.
We are not foodies so I don't feel qualified to offer too much about all that. I was more than satisfied with everything, even if most of the offerings were a bit above my head from an ordering perspective. I know this, there were very many "healthy eating" choices even though I chose burgers, fried calamari, pizza, grilled beef tenderloin, prawns and king crab legs slathered in melted butter
To wrap up, best ever trip and a final thanks to all the great folks who serve at Grand Paraiso. This Texas couple thanks you from the bottom of our heart and we look forward to seeing you again soon.

I know they had Grey Goose. Can't remember about Corona but I would be surprised if they didn't.
I was able to find out that the Grand/JOIA will be closed completely for the month of August 2024 to complete all of the planned renovations.
The TV does not have streaming service, and I'm not sure if they have USB/tethering capabilities for external device plug in.
