What nice surprise spending Easter in Ouranopolis at Makedonia Hotel! From the beginning we were looking to spend our 5 days Easter holiday in a rather simple not at all sophisticated place expecting quite simple pleasures from a fisherman’s village near Mount Athos ready to surprise us.

So we got very easy booking with the hotel manager/owner, Stelios, a nice and honest person always ready to meet you with a nice smile. Hotel is nice, as simple as you may expect from a 2 stars hotels, rooms are spacious enough with no charge for extra bed , thus cleanliness is absolutely impeccable during all our stay. We enjoyed a lot the church bell ringing and the daily prayer mess that could be nicely and discretely heard from the rooms. Good breakfast too , do not miss the yogurt # honey!

Thank you Stelios,
Thank you Hotel Makedonia

Hotel Makedonia seems like nice, family hotel. Owner was very kind during process of reservation, and this hotel is, obviously, one of only few which works during whole year in Ouranoupolis, Greece.
As I went to Monastery Hilandar (Chilandariou) they absolutely solved my problem where to spend one night, waiting for ferry to Monastery.
Big, clean, correct rooms, with, hm, small TV, but who cares...
Standard breakfast, but maybe it could be little better, with more options for people who are fasting (post).
Parking space - in front of hotel, definitely not problem during winter.
Recommendation for all travelers - pilgrims. Not so great view from hotel room, but, for one day, not a problem. In any case, you will see Eagean sea!!

Well, it was Summer 1998 and our first summer holiday together. No money, but keen to see Greece and the Travel Agent ( remember them ? ) showed us a selection of Thomson PriceBreakers. We liked the price of the AoA and booked it.

At around 11pm we duly arrived in Ouranoupolis, tired and hot after a 2.5 hours coach journey. We were met at the bottom of the road by Stelios, who gallantly carried my girlfriends case, up the slight hill towards the hotel. Great holiday - time moves on 9 years.

Last year, during a holiday on Thassos, we decided to take our hire car on the long journey to Ouranoupolis, just to see what it was like after all these years. AMAZING - very little change. Yes there was some development on the approaches, but all the shops/tavernas/supermarkets were just the same. We booked one night at the Makedonia - Stelios, the owner, just the same, a little older ( and greyer !! ) gave us the same room we had 9 years before - 21 rooms in the hotel - but it was much improved - TV, AirCon, new bathroom. Move on 1 year.

A couple of emails booked the hotel with Stelios - room confirmed - yes the same one again !! Arrived as expected, checked in by Stelios who now remembered who we were ! By now married therefore one different name !

Enough of this - the review - brill time , well looked after by very friendly hotel staff - huge breakfast by Greek standards. Everything worked in room - clean, very regular linen/towel changes, very convenient to beach/tavernas/Mount Athos.

Oh, by the way, don't take an alarm clock - the church below your window will wake you at 7am without fail ( apart from Sundays when you are in for a real treat !! ).

Loved it - wife loved it - Greece at its best.

Thanks Stelios Largeris !!

The hotel is nice (see pictures on official page), it's quiet outside, hardly any traffic, but only a few steps from the main street, the shopping area and the beach. No noise from neighbouring rooms to be heard. The owner is friendly, but not too bothered about the guests. The cleanliness is okay, but they use chlorinated cleanser, so it smells like being in a swimming bath. The hook for the toilet paper was in our case just underneath the hooks for the towels, so the toilet paper was covered by the towels and got slightly damp after taking a shower. The beds were okay, though much too hard as always in Greece. I have no idea how they survive on these stone hard matresses. The furniture was really nice, the rooms (we had rented two rooms, No. 1 and no 304) look charming, but the lights are very weak (especially in room no. 304), also in the bathrooms, so it is rather dark, even in mid August. The air conditioning in the rooms were good, but the ventilation system in the bathrooms is loud and ineffective, so you need to leave the door open after taking a shower.
The w-lan was very weak and slow, you only had a chance to use it at all near the reception, almost no reception in the rooms.
The breakfast, which you have to pay separately (5 € per person) is awful and not worth the money. Thinking of it gives me a bad remembrance, so I'd rather not go into detail.

This is a very good choice for travelers on a budget. Room is spacious with a kitchenette. We even had a bunk bed & two single beds in our room. Room is clean. There is also a small balcony with street view. Some mosquitos but we took care of them. A/C works well. Reception gentleman very helpful. Breakfast is limited, but not bad for just 5€ per person. The only issue I has was that the shower curtain is just a bit short, and water from the shower splashed out onto the floor in the bathroom. Otherwise everything is quite good for a budget hotel. Location is excellent; close to beach, shops & restaurants, & to the pier for boat trip to Mt Athos.

I stayed in this hotel for 2 nights at the end of May. And I enjoyed it a lot. First of all the price for overnight and breakfast was simply great! But the most important thing was how nicely I was treated by the owner Stelios! He is a gem. He was so helpful with organizing things and when I was asking for a restaurant to have dinner he was also helpful and gave me a 10% discount voucher for KRITIKOS RESTAURANT - which was good. So I really enjoyed it there. Thank you again for your hospitality!

You can take an afternoon bus from Thesaloniki and stay in Ouranopolis before your morning boat to Mt Athos. This hotel is perfect, it remains open although there isn't much life in Ouranopolis. Popular with pilgrims. Good breakfast, nice room, pleasant and helpful manager.

Здравствуйте! Тихий ли отель?

Да, очень тихий. Расположен в тихой части городка, в основном в отеле останавливаются паломники, которые едут на Афон. Они останавливаются всего на одну ночь, утром завтракают и уезжают.
