The hotel is located in the heart of the city, from the outside looks completely unspectacular, with the main facade still somewhat resembling a modest hotel, then the side facing Communist Street - not even close.
At the same time, inside the hotel preserved remnants of former luxury, no, this is not Aladdin's cave, but still. One marble staircase is worth something, not every St. Petersburg palace will find one.
The rooms are relatively small but sufficient in size. There is a large bathroom (with bath), there is just a shower. Nicely made, expensive furniture. Cooler in the hallway, plastic water bottles not welcome.
The Internet is fast enough.
Breakfasts are quite varied, which came as a pleasant surprise. But there's nothing else remarkable about the hotel, not even the gym for renovation, I understand it's unlikely to open.
The restaurant itself, which deserves a separate review, has several cafes and snack bars nearby, as well as a food store.

It is locayed in the heart of Ulan Udee. They have very good restaurant and local kitchen. They have very small bathrooms. Free wifi and parking available. While you are making reservation buy from internet. It is almost half price.

It took three tries but the room I ended up with was fine - my colleague had a fine room the first time. It is a tribute to the English speaking receptionists that I was able to change rooms twice because, a) leaking shower, b) burning rubber smell. Hmm - doesn't sound too good, but the third room was a charm. They were clean and sparse, with a good location across from the Lenin head square. A supermarket is across the street. No internet in rooms but you could buy a card and get it in the cafe. Too jet lagged in U-U to recall other room amenities. The breakfast was included and was fine - buffet style, which made it easy for non-English speakers. Good espresso in the cafe. Hope to get back to U-U soon, and would stay at this hotel again.

Stayed here two nights for a break from the Trans-Siberia train. It’s an older, Stalinist hotel, which was refurbished a number of years ago. Carpets and wallpaper starting to show its age. Hallways and common areas have the ambience of a Stalinist style hotel, endless, gloomy hallways.
Room comfortable and a good size, bathroom clean and functional. Breakfast buffet mostly Russian and Central Asian style items. Receptionists friendly, helpful and spoke good English (compared to my Russian.). All in all, a fine hotel for 1-2 nights. Not a destination item.

We spent 4 nights at this hotel recently and thoroughly enjoyed our time there. We arrived early in the morning off the Trans Siberian railway. Not all the staff on reception spoke English but enough that someone could help us and he was very happy to find space for us to leave our luggage until our room was ready. When we returned to check in, everyone was again helpful and we were shown to our room. The room was very comfortable and had everything we needed. The location of the hotel is excellent - it is very easy to walk to all the sites and there are plenty of cafes/restaurants close by. If you are travelling on the Trans Siberian and need to buy provisions for on the train, there is also a supermarket very close. The breakfast in the hotel was excellent - a good choice of dishes and everything was kept well stocked. We also ate in the hotel restaurant and had coffee in the lounge. Again these were both excellent and everyone was so helpful. We would thoroughly recommend this hotel.

Had a very pleasant two-night stay. The hotel is located in the prime area of the town, facing the Soviet Squire. Opera House is right across the street and the History Museum is a mere 5 minutes walk away. The famous pedestrian street Arbat is also within 10 minutes walk to the south. I arrived at Ulan-Ude by train and it was a good 30-minute walk to the hotel.
This hotel seems to have accommodated lots of famous Russian political figures like President Putin and PM Medvedev and you can see lots of those pics in the lift hall. I liked the classic atmosphere of this hotel. The room is of decent size with very high ceiling.
The room service is delivered from the restaurant in the basement which is ranked No1 in Trip Advisor. Very reasonably priced and lots of local cuisines to choose from.
Staff were all courteous and attentive with good command of English. Highly recommend Baikal Plaza to anyone visiting Ulan-Ude !

We arrived ulan ude train station after a 3 day train ride from Vladivostok, at midnight looking for our prearranged transfer service. After about 10 minutes of looking for someone carrying a name placard with my name on it, my son and I decided to just take a taxi. When we got to the hotel I was expecting someone at the front desk that didn't speak English but was pleasantly surprised to see one that did speak very good English. she told me the transfer guy was in the train station looking for me, I told her after my default 10 min. I decided to take a taxi. She checked us in, and we headed to our room on the 2nd floor, it wa a good thing it was on the 2nd floor as the building doesn't have an elevator and my son had to lug his 23 kilo bag up the stairs. Sorry no porters.
the room was clean and they had what one would expect for a 4 star hotel, we had a balcony since I reserved a dlx. Rm. it was in the bathroom that we discovered all the short comings, the fixtures were new and updated but the surface mounted tub had a clogged drain and water was seeping on to the bathroom floor which didn't have a floor drain. The wardrobe was the next problem, it was really itty bitty. the next day on the way out we advised the front desk on the bath tub issue the person on duty assured us it would be fixed. It wasn't. We stayed 2 nights and despite repeated complaints the problem wasn't addressed and they never offered to change room then again I was quite settled in I feared changing to a higher floor.
The next day after hitting all the sites in the city we ate lunch at the Japanese restaurant fujiko on the ground floor. Food quality was decent I loved the vegetable soup and the baked mussels. Be warned that they only have one English menu nevertheless the none English speaking servers did their best and they all had smiles something rare in Russia. That night we ate at the European restaurant tengis. Food was excellent but the service leaves a lot to be desired, it takes forever for the food to come out and you always have to go to the bar to call the waitress to your table. What really got to me was the ambient temp. In the room was at least 26C. I had to go out to cool off a couple of times. The restaurant had no English menu, but luckily the back of the menu with the calorific value and fat content of the food had an English portion. Would I go back to eat? Yes just have a lot of time and wear something tropical.
The hotel looked like it underwent a major renovation to update the place, which is nice. But when they fail to turn on the lights in the corridor after dark and fail to fix a clogged tub despite repeated complaints.....makes you wonder. 4 star it is not even if Putin stayed there, 3 stars is more like it.

2 nights here chosen and booked by our Trans Manchurian train agent. Very helpful English speaking staff who went out of their way to help. Very clean, and very central. Superb wifi. Breakfast slightly odd set up in a banquet hall with seemingly odd Luke warm food choices, but served its purpose.

My friend & I were alarmed to arrive and find nobody seemed to speak English but that was only a temporary setback. This is a very clean hotel with nice rooms and a very convenient central location with easy access to the bus station. It was good value for money and a most welcome break after four nights on a train.

I stayed here recently with a large group of friends. The hotel is central and opposite the Square. The rooms are clean and of a reasonable standard. The reception staff are very helpful, efficient and friendly, and leading up to our stay helped with our arrangements. There's are large secured car park at the rear of the premises with a security guard. Across from the hotel there are a number of places to eat and there is shopping nearby, (turn right out of the hotel, first right and then it's on the right and about a 5 minute walk). We arrived very late one night and arranged for dinner for 17 of us at 10.30pm, which show their commitment to looking after you. They even arranged packed lunches for our departure journey. I'd definitely stay here again and recommend the hotel to friends.
