We had an overnight spa trip for 2. Our package included: - prosecco and nibbles to the room upon arrivals - 30 minute spa treatment each - full use of the spa facilities for the rest of the day - 3 course evening meal - breakfast the following morning. Upon arrival you drive through a stunning country lane with the best views before arriving at the hotel. When we got there the receptionist was polite, checked us in and told us that the prosecco and nibbles would be sent to our room straight away. We went upto our room which we honestly couldn't fault it was beautiful with stunning views and a balcony overlooking the golf course. As our treatments were booked in shortly we called receptikn after around 20 minutes as our prosecco hadn't arrived. The receptionist said that it would not be coming to our room and we would have to come down for it. I explained that her collegeue had said it was on the way. She put me on hold for a few seconds and when she came back said 'oh yeah well it will be up soon'. A further 20 minutes past so we called again. Cutting a long story short. It came an hour later. When the waitress delivered it to our room she explained that she had said that they had run out of the strawberries and cream and said she could make one of us a fruit cocktail as an alterantuve. However my friend noticed that there were two other strawberry cream truffles (as per package deal) on the tray. We asked why we couldn't have those and she apologised stating that they were for another guest who hadnt arrived yet. So we politely asked if we could have one as we were here now and on time. She then said 'oh ok I don't see why not '. Why would you say that?! Anyway, we went down for our spa treatments. I cannot fault the massage itself they were brilliant. However the treatment was 20 minutes with 10 minutes of consultation. I think its only fair that when asked to come early for your consultation - this should not impact on your treatment time. The spa facilities itself were quite nice although having visited so many spas I was very suprised that they do not have a jacuzzi. Having said that, this is across board for the MacDonald hotel chain. Then onto the evening... The restaurant was full to the brim. We waited at the entrance 10 minutes before being seated and realised there were only two people on the shopfloor serving. Throughout the evening we honestly lost count of how long we had to wait. We had to get up and actively flag down a waitress when we could catch them and this was the same for most guests who became increasingly frustrated. Towards the end of night we did speak to the night manager and expressed our concerns. He explained that they were really short staffed and that the two waitresses on shift were both relatively new and inexperienced. We asked him for details of the general manager who he said we could would be in the following morning. On the way back to our room we stopped at reception with the intention of passing on our room number if he wishes to call. The woman on reception made a call and said that two ''girls'' were waiting in reception who wanted to complain. First of, as a woman in my mid 30s I found this honestly patronising and by the manner and tone in which she said it, it seemed as though it was meant offensively. Minutes later, the night Manager we already spoke to from the restaurant arrived. We politely explained that we were not quite sure why he had been called as we simply told the receptionist our room number and briefly that we wished to speak with the general manager. We could see he was frustrated. He apologised had brief words with the receptionist and left. The following morning we were met in reception by the general manager. He was polite, attentive and seemed to take on board what we said. Overall, unless staff training improved we wouldnt return. For what we paid, this wasn't a 4* experience for us

A group of 13 of us had a 2 night stay and played the Emerald course twice and The Sapphire once. Let me firstly say that ALL of the staff we encountered were friendly and helpful and did their best despite some obvious management imposed restrictions. Overall there is an obvious sense of a lack of investment on the golf courses. The Emerald is a decent course but is let down by scruffy tees, old and almost invisible tee markers, unswept greens, no marshalling and no on course refreshments (amazing lack of business acumen when the course was packed) The Sapphire is a disgrace and is not worthy of been called a proper golf course. Great potential and obviously many years ago was a gem. The greens are amongst the worse our group have seen in 20 years. Trees overhang tees so that the obvious shot lines cannot be followed. We teed off early (0930) and the uncut fairways and unswept greens made the first 2 holes a joke. We played winter rules as there was so much mud on the balls (after several days of sunshine) The rooms are fine and the bar area is excellent. The habit of having your breakfast served rather than self service is amusing as was a hunt by a nearby table to locate a salt cellar. I understand the chain is being sold and hopefully the new owners will invest in the courses. Definitely not a venue if golf is a priority. We tried to get taxis to take us to Whitchurch- impossible. Not much help from the hotel other than to give us a list of taxi firms but of the 5 on the list 3 wouldn't pick up.

Hi great location, very very friendly and helpful staff, good standard of decoration. Excellent Wedding venue. So why not 5 stars, possibly a little mean but little things that could easily be rectified with a little more oversight and application. For example, robes = nice, but belt loops broken. Or needing to ask for correct cutlery to eat steak and dessert. Table and chairs outside window excellent, but moving the bottle caps and cigarette stubs was needed before enjoying. Conservatory, nice but weeds growing through block paving marred a little. Nothing earth shattering but easily sorted and expected in this price bracket.

Lovely location, felt the public areas looked a bit tired and needed updating. The bedrooms were lovely, great size and view.It was a nice touch to have our breakfast in the separate room in the morning. Food was a good standard over all very pleased with the day.
