My wife and I enjoyed our 2019 visit so much we returned this year with our daughter, her husband and twin baby boys. The hotel is superbly located, the scenery is absolutely breathtaking and Niramaya is designed with such style and ambience it is an absolute pleasure in every way to be here. The staff were so welcoming and attentive to our grandchildren. Hope we can return in 2021 with other members of our family.

We spent two days in Patong, then came here to Koh Yao Noi for the bulk of our honeymoon. Best decision ever. The island is small, pristine, genuine, peaceful, safe and wonderfully relaxing. Niramaya is a fabulous resort - gorgeous little apartment with separate living area and a private pool. Totally detached, too, you don't share walls with anyone else. Very private. Everything is clean, comfortable and stylish. The staff are lovely (as is everyone on the island), and have been very accommodating, including letting us check out late on our final day. It's low season, so there aren't many guests, which means we get our breakfast made to order every morning - fresh fruit, breads, eggs, pancakes, sausage. The restaurant is very good, but you should definitely try the other places the island has to offer as well.
The hotel hires out scooters for about $9AUD per day, and the roads are very easy and safe to zoom around on - you can get all around the island in about 45 minutes. It's a really fun way to explore and gives you a lot of freedom. Or you can just hail a passing tuk-tuk.
There are barely any tourists here at this time of year (September), and the beaches are pretty much empty. The weather has been glorious - only one day when it rained for more than 20 minutes.
Recommended activities:
do an island hopping tour on a longboat - we had a private tour with a local fisherman where we fed wild monkeys, snorkelled, went into terrifyingly enormous caves and saw many beautiful islands, one with a hidden lagoon full of starfish. Stunning.
Massage. The hotel can organize a variety of spa treatments at the resort, or you can go elsewhere on the island for a bit cheaper.
Cooking class: we did the Tappee Thai Cookery Class with Mina, a local chef, in her lovely traditional home. It was AMAZING - we made our own coconut cream and milk, then cooked ourselves a delicious five course meal, and Mina emailed us the recipes at the end.
Eat. There are lots of little local restaurants, and we've had the most amazing Thai curries and fresh seafood. There's nothing better than sitting back with a beer and an amazing plate of fresh Thai food, looking out over the ocean, dotted with islands.
Don't come here if you want a party town. Come if you're looking for an unspoilt but luxurious piece of authentic Thai island life.

Just back from a week at Niramaya Resort, best to write review when all still fresh in my memory!
A fairly new place, about a year old now, with 12 villas set in some lush gardens across the road from the beach. There are six family villas and six one bedroom villas set around the gardens with a large centrepiece pool. We must say that the design, spec and furnishing of the villas are first class and in excellent condition and were very impressed upon arrival, having taken ages to decide on which of the main resorts to stay at for a week....we studied them all online before opting for Niramaya.
Breakfasts were okay, basic set menu choices - but perfectly adequate. Not sure the breads and pastries were fresh daily, but breakfast each day was fine - the room itself looks right on to the beach and across the sea to the islands, a brilliant view each morning. We only ate breakfast there and one lunch over the course of the week, preferring to go out and try somewhere local each evening for dinner.....we were often the only people staying at the resort so dining in an empty room didn't appeal. Prices were fine for drinks, not the big mark ups that you often see in report -v- local places.
There are plenty staff, very friendly and eager to help if asked for anything, otherwise they just leave you alone each day. Maybe they need to be a bit more focused on the guests and ensure the attention to detail is sorted. Too often we had to remind them to fill up shower soaps, light the evening burners etc, if you didn't ask or remind them it didn't happen...must do better here.
Pool area looks good, but there are only 2 sets of pool loungers....might have been a challenge if more than 4 people wanted to louge by the pool. The pool itself needed some attention, it didn't look or feel clean and when asked what was wrong with it, they said it was clean (just cloudy looking) due to a problem with the pool treatments....put me off from using it as often as I would have liked. However, each villa has it's own small pool with jets.....great for lounging in and reading and they are much cooler than the main pool which was way too warm to feel refreshed in.... Niramaya team, please sort the pool out!
Koh Yao Noi is a great island to explore.....doesn't take long on a moped scooter, hired from anywhere nearby for 300THB, as opposed to the 650THB they ask for at hotel. You can get round the whole island in a couple of hours, exploring all the nooks and crannies. Not many main roads, very little other traffic and most roads are just dirt tracks...great fun and a must do.
We visited other resorts for an explore.....Koh Yao Island resort looks very good as does Paradise up on the northern tip (challenge to get there by scooter, but we did). There are plenty other places to eat and stay, you will not be limited. Next to the resort are Tupee Pata - excellent food and the Pyramid Bar - great food and drinks.....the people who own Pyramid (Matt and Sharon) are great hosts and great fun to spend an evening or few with.
We also spent an evening over at Six Senses....stunning upscale resort that you expect from Evason.....stunning prices too of course. We had night of cocktails and dinner there....the setting, the gardens, the private beach, the facilities and dining are excellent...might even spot a couple of stars there......you must book in advance before going, you can't just turn up.
In summary, a brilliant week on a brilliant little island.....having done many other Thailand locations and islands,we found this just what we were looking for.....unspoilt, un developed and very thai down to earth. Beaches are not great when tide is out, but when it's in - there are dozens of great ones to spend the day on....
Hope not too many people go there, it's good to know that there are still small parts of south Thailand that remain the way they should be.

Lovely staff but this misses the absolute basics of a hotel and is in desperate need of investment. We had no running water for the majority of our five-day stay. The main swimming pool was nice at first, but the pumps and filters were not working so it became unusable. Also only five sun loungers for 10 villas.
Facilities are generally run down and in need of investment. Balcony and stairs in Family Villa (number 8) are not safe for young children making it difficult to relax. Also a lot of uneven ground, exposed screws and broken decking boards. Not what you expect from luxury accommodation and this did result in a couple of grazes for our two year. The on-site restaurant is excellent so worth a visit. Just stay elsewhere.

The place itself, it's as quite as it can be. When we were there until the last night we were the only guests. All you hear is the sea and an occasional mopet. The villa itself we had was nice, comfortable and basically has all you need (minus a bathtub inside). Though outside you got your own private pool with two seats inside (jets didn't work). All in all very nice and the cleaning staff took well care of keeping it clean daily and in the late afternoon a girl would come by to light some candles. Also the mini fridge had the basics you need all at a very reasonable price. Only oddity was a bottle of wine of 1600 bahts which is literally only 2,50 USD worth abroad. Somehow mispriced but ok.
Then the grand scheme, again nice layout, the villa's are situated around a big pool which is in an alright condition. Upfront is a small building for breakfast and next to it management. If you cross the small street there are some small pantons with some seats on it. Simply nice to sit and have a drink.
The staff itself again, nice and friendly girls. Want a drink, you got it. Want food, you got it. Pretty much all they could do if the products were there. One thing not worth ordering though was the salad caprese, they use the wrong cheese. They also have an inhouse massage for 1100 baths (iirc) for 90 minutes which was just great. Don't do the facial or anything like it, it's overpriced and the ladies have no clue.
Now the but..
We booked a full trip, hotel, transportation and flight. We got called by our agent and they abruptly canceled our transportation to the island which was quite a problem. The hotel also offers this a private ride for 5000 baths. There wasn't much choice so we asked Boom, the General manager to book this. A day later after all was settled all of a sudden Boom cancels the transportation as well and offers us a very poor hotel on Phuket itself. Which wasn't even close to the Niramaya so we couldn't accept this. After a bit of mailing all of sudden it was possible.
To make matters worse, the actual taxi/boat guy showed up 45 minutes late (when we got out of the airport), the boat guy was also royally late. Upon arrival Boom greated us and I told him we would like to discuss this matter the day after. Boom disappeared till the very last day.
In the meantime we mailed him about the issue but also power went down two full nights and mornings and one morning there was no water. Again for this kind of a place such simply shouldn't happen. Mind you they have aggregates but they didn't put them on till we asked why there is no electricity. To bad Boom didn't bother reacting once to mails and said he didn't see them till we were departing.
Like I said, it's a great place, nice friendly people but Boom made sure we wouldn't advice anyone else coming there. This place is great till problems arise but then management falls seriously short.

We wanted spectacular scenery, limestone karsts & long tail boats, beaches, a local vibe & good food -- but not massive crowds. With very little to go on about Koh Yao Noi in general, and Niramaya in particular, we took a leap of faith and (hesitantly) booked a family villa here. We liked the design/style, the two-story layout and the private pool at each villa. But for months I wavered, questioning whether the island would be too undeveloped and should we just deal with crowds at Krabi, or whether Niramaya even actually existed! To be honest, the website needs a serious update and all we had were a smattering of reviews here on TA and on booking.com. Would have loved Six Senses at a different holiday price point! We looked at Villaguna but didn't prefer the layout of the villas or the aesthetic. Koyao seemed too open to the elements, Paradise too far removed, the new Ani Villas seemed complicated to figure out. Bottom line I guess is always go with your gut.
Our family spent 6 days at Niramaya between Christmas and New Year and it was wonderful. This amazing island must be one of the best kept secrets in all of Thailand (oops, shhhhhh!). The villas and the whole space were nicely designed and look just like the pictures online - crisp white sheets, dark wood & modern fixtures, amazing view from Villa 8. With only 12 houses surrounding the main pool, we liked the feeling of having your own private "house/space" with the benefit of traditional hotel amenities (room cleaning, restocking, fresh towels, etc). Basically we felt like the whole place was ours without feeling isolated in the middle of nowhere.
It really seemed as if time stood still here - you could lounge around your deck, pop into your private pool, meander down to the main pool, gawk at the incredible view in front of your eyes, stroll across the street for a walk on the awesome natural beach, run inside your house for a blast of AC, etc...
We loved the hotel's location. It is on the "main road," which made it fun for people/moped watching. A walk across the street, up to Pasai Beach or down a little past Villaguna and you're at natural beaches for swimming when the tide is in. (Note, as others have here, these aren't white, sandy beaches. They're more natural and rugged and when the tide goes out, there's really no water). Sabai Corner across the street has a unique location on/over the water and good food/snacks/smoothies. Hook restaurant next door was our go to for happy hour & a pool table, with a cute lounge area and little tables on the beach. There's also a little mini mart a few doors down where our kids would walk for snacks, the sometimes-open EZ Bar and Pyramid restaurant. We rented a mopeds and bikes up at Pasai with the fabulous & minimal request to just "return them tomorrow, same time." Exploring the island was a total blast, the scenery between beach and forest is beautiful and we loved shopping in the "town." We hired our long tail boat guide through Sabai after we spent an evening talking with one of the owners there. But Niramaya would easily organize a boat as well. Reserve a cooking class with Mina, who is utterly charming and helps you whip up a delicious feast.
Everyone on Niramaya's staff was exceptionally nice and very helpful, but there wasn't always a proactive service mentality (which is unlike most other hotels we tend to stay in). For instance, there aren't staff coming to check on you at the pool and you aren't really given the lowdown on the island. But if you wanted drinks or food, all you had to do was ask and you were served with a smile. When we wanted to take a tour of KNY, all we had to do was ask and a sweet guide arrived to take us on a wonderful private truck ride. For us, this wasn't a problem and we actually preferred a less in-your-face experience. But just something to keep in mind if having someone anticipate your every need is a top priority. The only physical recommendation we'd make would be to repair some warped wood around the pool.
We feel so lucky to have visited this special island and knew we'd be way off the beaten path in terms of the typical island/hotel experience. If you want a manicured, cookie-cutter, hand-holding, typical island vacation, probably don't come to Niramaya or Koh Yao Noi. Because as we found out, Koh Yao Noi is not typical - it's extraordinary. Our hope was that we'd stay in a hotel that was modern, clean, friendly and safe to give us the opportunity to experience what has been described as one of the the last undeveloped Thai islands. Niramaya delivered that and more.

These beautiful villas were home for 3 days, for my husband, myself and 14 yr old son. Across the road from the calm ocean, spectacular jagged islands and amazing sun rises. 2 floors meant we all had our own space and bathrooms, as well as the outdoor shower, and private pool! Staff were local and very considerate. Arranged long boat to snorkel and swim all day, rented us scooters, and made us a very early breakfast the day we left. Really the lap of luxury, but low key. Can scooter around whole island in 2 hours, stopping along the way for amazing local seafood. Several other good restaurants within walking distance to Niramaya. So soothing and relaxing after Phuket!

Koh Yao Noi (and the nearby island Koh Yao Yei) are easy to get to from either Phuket or Krabi airport - take a taxi to the shore (app. 500 baht per taxi) then take one of the regular ferries that serve both islands (app 200 baht pp). Airport to resort takes under one hour.
During our 6 night stay, we felt that Niramaya is like paradise. It is only a few years old, very modern & good layout of the villas, plenty of room and the resort is small enough to ensure the staff looks after your every need. The location is very good (one of the best sea views on the island), beach in front and several nice beaches nearby, and to explore the island you just rent one of their modern scooters for half a day or one day. You can even take the scooter onto the ferry to nearby islands, and discover those islands on your own scooter. Cars are rare on these islands (except for the taxis to pick you and your luggage up).
The resort pool is new, good size and each villa also has its own mini pool, a real treat. The villas are very clean. The breakfast is high quality, as is the food for lunch or dinner. Plenty of choice, the quality is high, it's not expensive, and the kitchen is much more modern & clean compared to most other restaurants we've seen. We love food and were so pleased with the quality that we had dinner in the resort most nights. The staff at the restaurant is exceptionally helpful and friendly, make you feel very comfortable and are very attentive.
We booked this trip as a last-minute and used tripadvisor to choose where we would stay. The reviews were good, but I would say that the resort was much better than we expected and our holiday is one to remember.
The guests at this resort seem to be a good mixture of couples and families. Every villa is private enough to ensure you are on your own if you want to be.
Perhaps one thing that needs to be improved is the wifi - reception in the villas is poor, unless if you go to the main pool or the lobby. But other than that I would say that everything is as good as it gets.

I had the most amazing time being lucky enough to spend 12 nights at Niramaya Villas. The accommodation was out of this world, first class furnishings and decor. It had a very luxurious feel to the villa with your own patio, separate living room and bedroom with a huge king size bed. It also had great bathroom facilities all with home made soaps and shampoo etc. Fantastic!! You also had your own enclosed private jacuzzi pool!!! Unbelievable. The restaurant was very nice, with excellent food. The staff were very attentive, and couldn't do enough for you. The staff and my family then organised a surprise birthday meal for me, complete with beautiful table decorations, hand made of course, a huge birthday cake, balloons and streamers all set up around the dining room. I had the most amazing, fantastic time and would love to be able to come and stay here again. You could not fault it, was made to feel like royalty!!!!!

The resort is new and nice. The staff is lazy and unfriendly, not able to help you with anything. It took three days to get information about how to leave the island to Krabi and the given information was wrong. The General Manager is a son of the owner from the mainland and lives in one of the Villas - whereas his occupation seems to be son instead of GM. He doesnt care about anything. By far the most expensive and less satisfying stay during our trip through thailand. The beach was not cleaned and very dirty, the staff was sitting in the shadow all day long. At night they are sitting together in the reception - dont disturb them! The lady at the reception is not willing to spend time for your questions. Poor Wifi reception.
