This peaceful oasis made me feel like I was in the jungle, you can resource yourself, take some time to read, swim in the amazing infinity pool, have a massage or just discuss with the welcoming and friendly people working at The Hideout. On top of all of that, this paradise is totally eco-friendly so you can feel guilt-free and enjoy your stay !

There is NOTHING more amazing than waking up naturally and peacefully as the sun rises, and not even having to get out of bed to enjoy your view - overlooking the jungle and the sea. It is seriously special. The staff, particularly our lovely host Tine, were just wonderful - so warm, fun, friendly, and genuinely caring. Without electricity & wi-fi, we really learned to appreciate the luxuries that nature offers. The treasures that this hotel provides really are the closeness to the jungle, the beautiful local food ingredients, the amazing sustainability practices, the wild creatures you can see and hear, the people who run it and the beautiful setting (rather than the usual perceived hotel ''luxury'' of air con, TV screens and tacky plastic mini shampoos). The food at the restaurant is unbelievable - we spent over a week on the island and the food at The Hideout was by far the best we had. Home-cooked, fresh ingredients and a beautiful selection on the menu. We loved every single meal. Our lovely host would chat to us about our food likes/dislikes etc and was kind and thoughtful enough to order in a particular fruit for my fussy boyfriend to try, and to arrange local honeycomb to be sourced for us to sample. And the chefs are seriously talented. Every detail has been carefully thought about - from the careful and beautifully simple design of each room, the very comfortable beds, home-made mosquito-repelling eco-friendly shower gel, gorgeous Thai bath robes, a well-written welcome and guidebook in each bedroom, board games to play by eco-lantern light in the evenings. The hotel was a sanctuary for us (away from busy lives in London). Plus, The Hideout provides mopeds to go and explore the bustle of the island during the daytimes, but we could still come back to the peace and calm at nighttime. Any poor reviews of this hotel (I can sadly see a couple) are from people who have totally failed to understand the point of this place. No - it is not for the faint-hearted: you will hear exciting jungle noises in the night, and you will have to go to bed when it gets dark and wake up when it gets light, and being in a treehouse during a storm is exhilarating, and there is no wi-fi - IF THIS IS NOT FOR YOU, then WHY did you stay here? For us, these things were what the experience was all about. THANK YOU HIDEOUT! <3

These beautiful treehouse villas built on this beautiful and serene island of Koh Yao Noi is not less than a gem. With no internet and electricity you feel very close to nature. Not meant for people who would cry over having no air conditioning at night, it could get pretty hot at night. Recommended when the weather is pleasant in Thailand, maybe March or April start. The ingredients used in cooking are fresh and the food just tastes amazing! Best PadThai Noodles I had in thailand. Food might be considered little overpriced, but the taste is beyond the world. All the staff is nice and kind and the place is kept clean round the clock. Our host Tine was very helpful and kind and also played Jenga, Jackpot etc with us, which was a fun afternoon. Waking up to a view of sea and green trees all around you is just a wonderful experience and everyone can give it a try atleast once

Beautiful, amazing view. But do not go there. Super expensive for what you get, at night it was 36 degrees celsius inside the mosquito net (which was full of holes!!!). No fans, fine if you've built the accommodation in a way that takes account for tropical weather. But they had not. Also could invest in solar powered fans given access to sun... Instead of a relaxing last 3 days of our holiday, we did not sleep. After the first night we asked the person in charge for a solution*. She did what she could, but the owner Anita, who was away, would allow nothing: we asked for a refund for one of 3 nights so we could afford another place and get some sleep, but no. She said we could get a refund if the place was booked, but given there were other free rooms that was obviously not going to happen. They even admitted it was so bad because the trees hadn't been cut back as they should have been, stopping any breeze. It was not just uncomfortable but dangerously hot, only 1 litre of water was provided (luckily we brought our own!), we had to get up 5 times in the night to shower to bring our body temperatures down to a manageable level, and we woke up with headaches and feeling terrible. Three expensive, sleepless nights to end an otherwise incredible holiday. There are so many equally beautiful resorts on the Koh Yao islands that are environmentally aware, use local & sustainable produce, are locally owned, locally staffed, with better food and service. Go to any of them! We also stayed at Koh Yao Yai Village (on the sister island), which was so incredible and a fraction of the price. * a student from Germany who had only been there for two months left in charge while the owner was away, instead of the Thai staff who had been working there for longer; very strange colonial dynamics made this stay even more uncomfortable.

Response from islandhideout, Owner at The Hideout - Koh Yao Noi
Responded May 18, 2019
Dear Jacquelyn H., Thank you for staying in The Hideout and thank you for taking the time to write this review. I take great pride in what we have achieved with The Hideout, so I'm hopeful that this response can offer some clarity on the issues with your stay with us. Firstly (and most practical) is regarding the heatwave during your visit. While the lion's share of our guests have enjoyed and embraced the unfettered immersion in nature at The Hideout (as well as unlimited spring water we supply to ALL Hideout guests, no matter the season), we understand that not everyone shares the same perspective. We would have been happy to help you find an alternate property with air conditioning and/or protection from the elements. Though you booked your room via a third party travel site (a non-refundable rate), we would still honour our refund policy once your room was booked by another guest — this was highly likely, as our calendar confirms we were completely booked at the time, but with potential guests asking about availability. Meanwhile, I must admit we have no intentions of adding 'fans' (solar powered or otherwise) to our rooms and common areas, as we believe this would disrupt the purely natural experience our guests have come to treasure at the resort. For potential future guests reading this -- and with respect to the traditional temperatures in the region in late spring -- we hope you will factor in climate and listed amenities before booking. Secondly: as your review states, there are more standard accommodation options on the islands for a more traditional travel experience. That said, we are proud to be the only sustainable 'boutique' location on either Yao Noi or Yao Yai that was built by overwhelmingly local craftsmen and women, staffed by the same, featuring materials indigenous to the island itself, while also serving an acclaimed and authentic southern Thai menu sourced almost solely from local ingredients through our Koh Yao farming partners. This is something that other accommodations here (no matter how 'eco conscious') cannot rightly claim, for most food, staff, and raw materials are imported daily from the mainland at these locations. And finally, I am truly sorry that I could not be there personally to address these challenges during your stay. It's true that our German intern Tine (and we are very proud of her achievements and abilities) was our representative for 'guest experience' in managers absence (as our local hosts are still building confidence with their English language skills, unlike traditional hotel hires from the mainland). That said, I must say that you are mistaken with your statement re: 'colonial' dynamics — in fact, The Hideout mandate and culture is to consider our Thai hosts as mentors, peers, and equals in every way. WE are guests in THEIR home, and will always be grateful for their generosity, hospitality, and friendship. Please feel free to send an email to anita@hideoutkoyao.com if you would like to discuss with me personally as we are striving to give our treasured guests an ultimate guest experience. Thank you again for sharing your thoughts. Anita Ritter

Everything here was amazing, even if needed a bit of getting used to, was amazing adventure at modern and beutiful house, that gives you a feeling that yi uare in tree house. It was love at the first side! Peaceful, you can calm down, come back to yourself, concentrate on your partner, as there is no internet which was amazing! Due to this we were living in present moment. Food was amazing and prepared from ingredients that were grown in own garden. The owner and the staff welcomed us lovingly. The island is amazing and offers you to still enjoy "unpopulated" Thailand. One of the best stays and memories ever. And the people that are staying here are not typical 5* hotel people. Almost everyone we met had breathtaking adventure to tell. Dreaming to come back!
