#4 of 39 hotels in Watamu
Travelers' Choice
Hemingways Watamu is an iconic tropical paradise on the Kenyan coast sitting right in the middle of the pristine Watamu Marine National Park with its idyllic white sand beach and turquoise waters. The exceptional personal service and sincere charm of this established hotel has come to represent Kenyan coastal luxury to so many travellers for close to 30 years. There is so much to do here - learn to kite-surf; get your PADI certificate, take a sunset dhow cruise on Mida Creek, play a round of golf on the nearby world class golf course, Vipingo Ridge; or go on safari for a few days in Tsavo or the Maasai Mara. If that all sounds a little too energetic, relax around the pool with a good book as you work your way through our cocktail menu.

4 nights in August.. the welcome was lukewarm with no one to show us around so we had to figure our way. The welcome staff appeared busy but with whom we wondered since we were also guests. The food was good Covid protocols well observed. The photos are deceptive the hotel rooms are very small and apart from a bed theres no other furniture so you all sit on the bed. Theres no beach. Hotel is on a cliff. The 2 pools are very small so not fun for length swimming. The grounds are very small, nowhere to relax. The manager and Asst. Are very helpful. Good for business short term stay not for holidays nor kids. Theres no kids club either.

I took my mother for a mini vacay this past weekend on a 3 day visit. I did a direct booking and right from my email communication, the reception was lovely and I could feel the warmth before arrival. Mwamba our driver was right on time to pick us from the airport, Anne from reservations came to say hi as we arrived ( we had communicated only on email), John helped us with our bags to our room and took his time to show us around and familiarize with the essentials. Our room was quite lovely on the second floor (I didn't expect this as I had been informed that it was not available when booking). I truly enjoyed the attention to detail in the rooms and the dining area. Dinner was timely despite not being served as buffet. Breakfast had such variety that my mom got her ‘nduma’ (arrowroots) and felt right at home. Redemptar, our waitress served us so well and even kept my mom company when I wasn't around.T he ocean view was exceptional. When we wanted to leave for a tour of Watamu town, Sylvia from reception managed to organize a tuktuk for us from the comfort of the hotel. The hotel was generally quiet during our stay making it the perfect spot to just relax and unwind. As my mom is aged at 74 years and she is very cautious of her interactions due to Covid-19, the hotel was not crowded and the staff wore masks during the entire period. I noted they even disinfected the visitors bags on arrival. Tapps who was in-charge of accommodation granted us late check out for about an hour and half because of my aged mother so that we could not be stranded as our flight back to Nairobi was at 3pm. Needless to say, I am truly grateful to the staff at Hemingways for making our stay heavenly…..a little heaven away from home. We were comfortable and the best treatment I have had so far from all the hotels I have visited both North and South Coast. I will definitely plan to visit again for a longer stay but first visit their spa in Nairobi. Thank you once again😃😃😃😃

Beautiful location overlooking turtle bay. Unfortunately the food wasn’t very good. Wait staff was very friendly. Food was average at best but priced at a premium. A few mistakes by the waitstaff (incorrect order) was not handled by the manager. Would also recommend to the chef to include fried seafood platter as an option on the menu.

This hasn’t been my first time visiting this exceptional hotel. However this time round they exceeded my expectations. I have never experienced hospitality the way I did at this amazing hotel. I was especially moved by the wonderful lady known as Husna. She went above and beyond to ensure our stay was nothing short of magical. From the booking of our stay, to always appearing at breakfast time, to even walking by the pool and simply asking us “ Hope you’re having a wonderful time.” Mind you she always had a smile on her face and was so eager to ensure our smile never left our faces. She is an asset to this establishment and I wanted to say you won’t be dissatisfied if she’s around. Can we also talk about the breathtaking apartments. Wow just wow! The cleanliness is top notch and the service all round is top notch. Many thanks to the amazing head chef Nicholas for the exquisitely, delicious food. He has an attention to detail and his food is just heart warming. Another thanks goes to Nelson, thank you for your attention to detail and ensuring our stay was memorable. Once again this hotel deserves all the accolades because it was a magical stay for my family and I. Thank you so much and please maintain these amazing standards.
