The R2 Rio Calma Hotel & Spa & Conference is often applauded for its cleanliness and the spacious rooms it offers, although the rooms are sometimes described as basic. While some guests find the hotel's value reasonable, others are put off by additional costs and the food's quality. The hotel's lively atmosphere, complete with live music and entertainment, is a hit, though it can come across as noisy to some.
Attentive staff often receive praise, yet there are occasional remarks about slow service during peak times. The hotel's amenities are generally well-regarded, especially the impressive grounds and food variety, despite some concerns about Wi-Fi charges and a shortage of sun loungers. The location is mostly appreciated for its tranquility and views, but the remoteness and distance to local attractions can be a downside for visitors.

After a reservation made by the LastMinute operator (which remains silent for the moment) our arrival at the hotel was disappointing. Some front desk staff are condescending to you and think you're idiots who never traveled in their lives. They start by asking me for an invoice of my reservation to assign me the right room with the details of my services. By the time I got my hands on the email regarding this famous reservation, the hostess had obviously already found the right information about us (a royal suite with Jacuzzi) and gave us room key + bracelets for restaurants. That's exactly when it gets interesting. First dinner in this large buffet at will, a waiter comes to us and asks us what we want to drink, we answer politely in Spanish with my wife "water please". The waiter comes back with two decanters of water from their fountain, at which point he asks me for my bracelet, previously provided by the hostess showing what looks like a payment terminal with inscribed "4.40 euros". I then express my astonishment and tell him who we have a full board reservation and that I do not have to pay this sum. And explains that this amount will not be deducted on our room if I own this "all inclusive" package. I hesitated for a moment and finally accepted. The next morning, in doubt I come to the reception to ask them about the functioning of the restaurant. The latter also takes us from above and explains, hang on, that we are in āfull boardā and that this does not include drinks (alcohol or not) and that I have to pay 30 euros per person per day if I want to take advantage of this āall inclusiveā service. Obviously I refuse, and explain that we just want to drink water during our meal. According to this lady, I have no understanding of āall inclusiveā and want to pretend to be an idiot. However, I am used to travelling all over the world and I know how to differentiate a service that includes āmealā drinks from an open bar system that includes unlimited alcoholic beverages. I would like to point out that after a discussion with our maid, every morning when they take care of the rooms (linen and other) they systematically provide two bottles of water that are offered by the hotel. One morning, they even put us a bottle of champagne that we never dared open for fear of being charged. Fun fact hilarious all the same, every morning the buffets were full of juices of all kinds and... hang on, champagne at will for all alcoholics from 8am and at no time did the waiters come to you to scan your bracelets. Limits if you were visiting the area, you could most likely have enjoyed a free hearty breakfast... Finally, the cuisine offered was not of quality and we very quickly made the choice to eat lunch and evening outside to enjoy some good local food. Hygiene is also questionable, we have repeatedly encountered cockroaches of all sizes in the restaurant, around self-service food dishes and the room, which deeply spoils the experience when the hotel is maintained outside by dozens of employees and the gardens are beautiful.

Spent a wonderful week at Rio Calma in Mid November and are already planning to return for a longer stay.
Hotel reception is an amazing cathederalesk vaulted expanse, with settee seating areas and the hotel bar. We enjoyed our pre and post dinner drinks here listening to the sound of the evening pianist playing during dinner service.
Our standard double room was in the annex, a lovely location within the grounds, with a garden view and sunrise from the balcony through the palm trees. The room was well appointed with a sizeable bathroom with excellent powerful over bath shower. The room staff, Doris, made sure our room was perfect every day and our only change would have been for a double bed rather than two single beds pushed together.
The gardens are well landscaped and maintained with the plants and palm trees enhanced with lighting at night. We really enjoyed a few romantic walks around the grounds late in the evening and sitting outside the entertainment bar on one of the many garden settees on the patio.
The infinity pool, with its waterfall is a bracing but refreshing way to cool down and the shallower second pool, being heated for winter season, was a welcoming 23 degrees. I really enjoyed the fun aqua aerobics session being held here daily.
There were plenty of sunbeds available and we booked one of the romantic four poster double sunloungers a couple of times and really enjoyed the included fruit platter and bottle of bubbly.
The buffet restaurant had a very wide range of food options available both at breakfast and dinner service; with freshly cooked omelets or fried eggs for those who asked at breakfast and fish and meat options cooked to order at dinner service. We loved the beautifully made delicate mini cake deserts. We ate both in the restaurant and outside on the terrace, enjoying the terrace a little more as there was background music.
Being up on the cliff away from the town it was helpful that there are three shops on the reception level (level 6) providing souvenirs, swimming attire, jewellery and other gifts. One providing a small selection of sweets, snacks, water, alcohol, cigarettes, vapes, toys and magazines.
We found all the staff to be very friendly and welcoming, even helping me with my attempts at ordering in Spanish.
On the down side building work has started on the area where the crazy golf course used to be, which does mean periodic noise but they were doing the initial ground work during our stay so is probably not long term and there are a few patches of tiles missing on the infinity pool floor and curving infinity wall, however timing for any repair if in daily use throughout the year is probably the issue.

A lot to digest? Read an AI-generated summary of recent traveler reviews.
We have just spent 11 nights here and it is unfortunate that such a stunning hotel is being badly let down by its management.
The air conditioning in our room didnāt work throughout our entire stay, despite reporting it three times to the staff at reception, nothing was done. Our room didnāt drop below 26 degrees the entire time and the heat was so unbearable we had to go into the town and buy a fan.
The restaurant experience was probably the worst I have come across in an all inclusive hotel, breakfast was nice and we could manage to get a decent lunch if we stuck to salad but the evening meal wasnāt great. Firstly there was never any bowls left if you wanted soup, nor were there ever any spoons. How about putting spoons on the tables with the knives and forks? Pretty simple solution, not really rocket science is it? Make sure the bowls are washed, not chipped and put out in order for guests to actually be able to have soup, again, not rocket science. Myself and my husband were often standing like a couple of lemons waiting for someone to bring us a bowl and spoon and one evening when we asked for them we were brought two bowls that had very obviously just been wiped with a smelly cloth. That nearly made me vomit and I never went near the soup for the rest of my stay. Most of the staff are doing their best but there arenāt enough of them to keep the restaurant running smoothly. It was the same scenario for the ice cream, never a bowl to be found. BUY MORE BOWLS!! And throw the chipped ones away. The smelly bowl incident had us heading into the town for our meal the following evening, couldnāt face another night in the hotel restaurant.
The hotel itself is beautiful, very clean in general and our room was also cleaned daily. The grounds are lovely as are the pools. We liked the grassed areas for sunbathing. I would have loved to see the Lido in use, I can imagine how stunning that would have been as the design of the hotel and grounds is very impressive. This is why I feel it is such a shame that the management donāt treat the hotel and itās guests with a bit more respect.
The pianist was excellent and we enjoyed sitting in the lobby on an evening listening to him play. It really was the most beautiful lobby with comfortable furniture to sit and enjoy a drink.
All in all a beautiful hotel that, in my opinion, looks like a five star but behaves like a three. Such a pity.

Stayed for 3 nights and what a way to ruin your holiday! Definitely not a 4 star hotel. If you are thinking of going here please read things you need to be aware of! Meal time is horrendous if you are not there when the doors open then you have to sit at a dirty table and either take cutlery from tables that are closed off or go looking for some or someone. First night told off by staff for sitting at a clean table, because she had cleaned it for breakfast. Night 3 I got beyond a telling off I was shouted at in Spanish as I sat outside at an available table that could seat 4 but there was only 2 of us. In normal circumstances common sense would prevail but you literally have to get a table where ever it may be. As if the shouting wasn't bad enough she then gestured I was stupid or had no brains. When she took the drinks order she cursed ..not even under her breath as I asked for water after she was charging me!!!! Obviously charging for table water... who knows they don't tell you what they are charging your for drinks they just scan your wrist band. The same table next to us had been reserved so sat empty most of the evening and the same waitress that had shouted at me allowed a couple to sit at the reserved table but didn't shout at them maybe it was my English Accent she didn't like! When using the Spa please get changed in the shower as the male worker will just walk in without knocking or checking if anyone is in the changing room. He didn't leave until he had shown another lady the lockers and no I wasn't fully clothed. I asked to speak to the manager to be told there was no manager available today. I asked to speak to someone senior as I had a complaint but was told there was no one to complain to today....they really don't like that English Accent.

Dear Bec, As we have already spoken to each other personally, we are sorry that you were not able to speak directly to management because they were no longer in the building. But we were happy that we were able to sit together and personally apologize for the incident in the spa. Our employee had already apologized. He hadn't seen you were in the locker room. It can happen, but obviously it shouldn't. So once again, we are sorry for the inconvenience you experienced with us during your vacation. We apologize for the not so nice experience in the SPA and service. We attach great importance to ensuring that our guests feel comfortable with us and come back again. Thank you for your time and the nice conversation. Best regards Quality department

There us much to like about this hotel. The pools and grounds are amazing and it is a very big hotel. Reception for us were great even though we had a double bed not two singles as requested and barely a sea view which we paid for after insisting they did give us a twin better room. Why do we always have to stand our ground? So room ok, rooms and beds bit dated and basic, pillows are awful, lumpy. Towels bit old snd beach towels the same. Duvets are thin and beds bit hard but ok. Service on drinks is hit and miss clearly they running on minimum staff bit frenetic at times and not much English spoken either, sadly our Spanish speaking family member not with us. The entertainment areas are well subscribed, a piano bar and a showtime area. It has so much going for it if only they could spruce up rooms and towels and pillows. I found the meals ok plenty of choice and plenty of it too, so no complaints there. Location us bit remote that doesn't matter too much to me but it is a long way from the airport so factor in a car or use the buses, taxi is very costly. I'm sure it's tough to run an hotel this size but shave a bit off the gardens upkeep and improve the beds and bedding also towels maybe. Would I come again? NO it's ok not memorable but just ok.

Dear Susan, It is a pleasure to read that you really like many things about our hotel. Thank you for appreciating the work of the employees. We are really sorry that you also noted some negative points, such as the pillows. Of course there are a few different pillows. Just let the reception know, also because of the hard beds. These are relatively new, but if you don't like it hard, we also have toppers. We're sorry you didn't know this. thank you for your review. We are pleased that you generally had a nice stay with us! We would also like to thank you for pointing out some areas for improvement. Now we hope that we can show our improvements during your next stay. Best regards Quality department

Vacation | Family Experience in August 2023 as a family with a baby.
Very good experience at this hotel but some small flaws.
The hotel is far from the shops and the beaches are quite difficult to access. A car is more than recommended to be able to go out a little because there is not much nearby, especially in the evening. However, there are electric scooters almost everywhere.
The hotel is very clean, the services at the reception are excellent, they speak all the languages really great.
Downside for the restaurant! Some servers (not all of them very pleasant) but others are angry, take 10 years to bring you a drink and complain when you ask for something again after waiting 15 minutes while they are just clearing it up! The food there is a choice for everyone, even gluten-free bread! It's quite varied and on par with an all-you-can-eat buffet, however the plates are poorly washed...!
The rooms are dated but very clean, the maintenance service is excellent! And the smart TV offers Netflix YouTube and a large choice of channels in the evening!
The swimming pool, the strong point of this hotel! Magnificent view, well maintained (children's swimming pool sand), one of the swimming pools is heated, it's very pleasant, really perfect šš½
But people reserve their deckchairs in the morning, itās just annoyingā¦!
Costa Calm lives up to its name but the hotel is quite good with a few flaws.

OK experience, pretty typical of large 4* all inclusive. Poor experience in Jazz Bar last night, no queue system so anarchy at the bar and a barman who panicked when a few people walked in simultaneously. Explained to him after waiting an age for service that he was serving out of sequence and he took offence, told me I was at the back of the queue, despite the man next to me telling him he had jumped the queue! Instead of owning the mistake with an apology he was smug. I was only in the queue to return a glass of wine that was from a corked bottle. He struggled to understand me and had no more Rose wine to offer! 300 odd rooms but only one bottle of Rose in this particular bar? Following day he is my waiter at lunch, I order a carafe of Rose only to be told āitās the same wine I gave you yesterday ā! Well it wasnāt from the same bottle, he just completely couldnāt accept it was the bottle he served that was corked, not the entire cellar, training basics. Better trained staff would help and he wasnāt typical of the team members generally but should not have been in charge of a bar solo. The hotel itself is adequate, food generally good enough but lacking imagination rather than quality. Nothing in the surrounding area as an alternative drinking hole or tapas bar so if youāre booking you need to be aware that unless youāre up for a long taxi journey this is it. BTW cleaners great, general hygiene good, could use mattresses on the sun beds.

The resort itself is five stars, absolutely beautiful place and the pools are lovely, room is pretty standard but no faults. Everything else however was a complete disappointment. If you book all inclusive, you have to pay for food and drinks after 11pm. Your all inclusive band will also stop working at midday on your final day, so no drinks or food by the pool after then unless you want to pay a ridiculous amount of money. The food was absolutely shocking. Breakfast wasnāt too bad but lunch and dinner left me feeling miserable whenever the time came around. Food meant to be hot (like reheated lasagna ) was cold. Everything tasted as though it came out of a can. āCleanā plates available to use were still dirty. Dinner service took forever to be served a drink - they are incredibly understaffed for the amount of tables they had. Then the location too isnāt the greatest, we resorted to having to eat out for dinners and the nearest restaurant was a 35 minute walk away. And finally our last day was horrific. To start, we couldnāt eat or drink all inclusive after 12 oāclock. We were due to leave for our flight home at 6:30pm so we were told weād have a room reserved for us between 4:30-6:00 to shower and get ready. When we went to get the room key the lady at reception then told us that was not the case and that weād have to use a tiny cramped bathroom on a random hallway, and we only had half an hour. The bathroom was flooded by the end of the shower, leaving my bags wet, the stall was tiny and with no ventilation, no towels were provided, and due to the light sensor I kept being left in the pitch black darkness every 2 minutes of my shower. This holiday that I was really looking forward to left me totally unimpressed and looking forward to coming home by the end of it. The management and the service is really what let it down.

Dear Alicia, We are pleased to read that you liked our hotel complex and its pools very much, but we are very sorry that you had some negative impressions during your holiday with us. Upon arrival, all AI guests receive the AI āāfood & drinks menu. Either as a black and white copy or the guests take a photo with their cell phone. There is exactly what and until when ALL In is. From 10:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. You will also receive this information from the tour operator before you make the booking, we are not a 24-hour all-inclusive hotel. Check-in is from 2 p.m. and check-out is at 12 p.m. The booked service begins and ends at these times in the hotel. However, our late departures get free lunch and a drink from the hotel. We have a large selection of AI drinks with branded drinks such as Smirnoff, Havana Club 3, Bacardi, Martini, Gordons, John Haig, Carlos III, etc.. Also cocktails like PiƱa Colada, San Francisco, Gin Fizz, Planters Punch, etc. are included. It is a pity that this card was not sufficient for you. Also in the restaurant, our breakfast from 07:30-10:30, lunch from 13:00-15:00 and dinner from 18:45-22:00 is included as well as the all-inclusive drinks, as well as the snacks from 12:30-16:30 at the Pool bar Like hotdogs, hamburgers, fries and sandwiches and ice cream and cakes from 10:30-18:30. Our service staff goes out of their way to make our guests as comfortable as possible. Since our check-out is at 12 p.m. and you have to leave the room at 12 p.m., our guests have the option of paying for a late check-out if available. This means you can stay in the room until you leave and thus continue to use the all-inclusive program or you can reserve a shower room free of charge. This is near the gym. you get the towels at the reception at the booked time and have 30 minutes per person to get ready for the start of the flight. Thank you for your review. We also thank you for bringing some improvement opportunities to our attention. Now we hope that during your next stay we can show our improvements. We always do our best to meet and, if possible, exceed our guests' expectations, even if we don't always seem to succeed. We sincerely apologize for this. Kind regards Quality department

Where to begin, I have so many great things to say about this hotel! I and my fiance had such a great experience staying at this hotel! It was beautiful inside and out! The pools although a little chilly at first, are a nice cooling break from the sun! One is heated and there's a kids pool also! We were all inclusive and there was many things to choose from(drinks and food) There's the buffet that serves breakfast, lunch and tea(dinner) and we could not get over how big the area was. So much yummy food to try! There's lots of food involving fish which I like, my fiance not so much but there was so much more to choose from, such as: every pasta you could think of, beef stew, salads, deli meats/olives etc and many other hot foods that I can't remember off the top of my head. We alot went to the restaurant which resembled a botanic garden! The food, wine and the waiter were incredible!
The room was fantastic and clean with a view of the pools, hotel and sea! Everytime we came back to the room the room was immaculate, everything folded and even our beach towels had been folded into different shapes which made us smile!
I don't have words to describe how much we loved conversing with the staff! They were so warm and welcoming and we had many laughs with them!
Although the area is quiet, there's alot of different tours you can go on! We went on the pirate ship and glass bottom boat which is just a trip on the bus to the harbour. The wild north tour you can see the volcano, popcorn beach, sand dunes and many other things and the oasis wildlife centre which we got to experience alot of different new things like feeding giraffes and camels and seeing hippos for the first time.
We will definitely be back in the future! Thank you for the great stay, we miss it already!

NOTHING recommended. Given all the viable options you have in mind for your trip, even if it is an offer or cheaper, I advise you to choose other options. āCheapā is expensive.
Misleading advertising since you make the reservation. I booked a room with sea views, the price being ā¬249.37, and it had 4 various discounts and it ended up at ā¬172.17. When I check the bill, only ādouble roomā appears. Thinking that it was something normal and that they had other information in the system.
We arrived at reception, I had already checked in online, and the girl couldn't find us. After being informed that the check-in was already done. He was talking to other customers as well as me. I ask her to confirm that we have views of the sea, and she tells me that we have views and that she likes this room a lot. Maybe to pray or go on strike is fine. They give us a corner, which faces another building and with a hallway in between where everyone passes by. The perfect thing for a couple's break.
After refusing to sleep in that room, we are informed that there are no rooms available with sea views. Nor any other with better views (this is a hotel that faces directly the sea, shameful). The head of reception says out loud āthere are not many reservations left to arriveā, as if the problem is that you are late. When my reservation is made.
After several attempts, he finally informs us that there are rooms available by paying the difference of ā¬40. Which is not a matter of availability, but of money. My reservation with sea views cost the same as what was reported from the reservation center, but with discounts it was a lower amount. Finally paying that, it is like having lost the right to discounts.
Starting the holiday quite angry, and paying for the sea views, but obviously making a claim. The girl at the reception denies my complaint form and informs me that only the director can give it to me. Something illegal entry, for your information. It is mandatory that they deliver it if they ask for it.
We go out to dinner and when we return, the girl at the reception calls me running that they have spoken with the director, who was not present when we checked in, and informs us that they give us all-inclusive at the hotel.
If the director, who will be reading this review, thinks he is buying my silence, he is very wrong. Apart from having to pay ā¬40 which they have not even bothered to refund us, like a serious establishment; They give us all inclusive, in a hotel where the food is HORRIBLE. It tastes like refrigerated pasta and pasta mixed from the day before with lunch. A real shame.
I attach photos of everything for you to check.
Shame on the chain and establishment. They think that all customers are like foreigners, that we are satisfied with food and drink.
