Built in the mid 1980s this hotel comprising 51 suites/bungalows does appear a bit dated in places but it has a quiet charm. The rooms are spacious and comfortable with an emphasis on the bathrooms which have shower, bidet, twin basins and jacuzzi. The fittings could do with updating but there was always a plentiful supply of hot water and everything was beautifully clean. Our suite had a bigger private terrace, with outside shower, carefully designed to have full sun all day. It was completely unoverlooked and perfect for relaxed naked sunbathing. Breakfast is excellent except for the quality of tea and coffee; a new coffee machine - or at least a second one - would be a good investment. The food at dinner was average; service was friendly but the staff were clearly keen to finish as quickly as possible and we always felt rushed. There are two sittings for dinner, the latter starting at 20.15; on buffet evenings the food is beginning to be cleared away well before the official end of service. If you are expecting a relaxed Spanish-style dining experience you will be disappointed. This is a hotel where you need to be self-sufficient; there is no bar, no evening entertainment. It is wonderfully quiet and relaxing and exceeded our expectations in this respect.

If you are looking for peace and quiet, friendly, old fashioned good service, this is the place. The rooms, which stand alone and look a bit like terracotta igloos, are excellent. They each have a private courtyard as well as a more public patio overlooking the sea. Breakfast is excellent and dinner, waiter served on 4 out of 7 nights much better than I expected. There is a choice of main courses on the menu which wasn't repeated in the 14 nights we were there. The 3 buffet nights were not as good, but more than acceptable. The staff in the restaurant, led by Paco, were first class as were all the other members of staff we met. Even the lady gardener who tended the many cacti in the grounds was pleasant to chat to. We played tennis nearly every day, but the court is in need of attention and is bit too close to the local sewage works. Access to the beach is not too easy and beware the nudists. Some might find the atmosphere a little too quiet, but for us, wanting a couple of weeks away from the English winter, it was ideal.

This was our second visit. This time, we celebrated our 40th - José González, Director General, kindly sent a really nice note and a bottle of bubbly to help us celebrate. On both our visits, the oddest thing was that hardly anyone was around any of the pools during the day. Maybe they (mostly Germans and Spanish) were on the nudist beach (fabulous, fine and sandy, apparently gently sloping into the sea, beach bars, etc.) just across the road and to the left of the H10 Hotel. That entertainment aside, the suites are a really good size, with a separate lounge area, a large bedroom with two double beds, and a very large bathroom with a Jacuzzi bath plus shower. There are two TVs - no idea what was showing; we didn't switch them on. Housekeeping was faultless, thanks to Carmen, who takes really good care. We were half-board guests. Breakfasts and dinners are excellent, freshly cooked meals served by a great, hard-working team. The dinner menu varies daily - everything was gloriously tasty - fresh salad buffet, fresh fish, duck on sweet potato mash type food - (no chips), and there's a chef's corner where you can have your breakfast eggs/bacon cooked in front of you any way, pancakes of whatever. As mentioned above, the beach isn't far. There are shops/supermarkets around a 10-15 minute stroll. The only negative is that the greenery that lines the roads is kept watered via what appears to be an irrigation system. We could only imagine what was being pumped through the pipes. Let's say that the stench when walking along could, in some places, be unbelievably breathtaking. Unfortunately, that means that we would be unlikely to return. It's such a shame. Other walkers appeared unphased. Maybe it was just us. Footpaths are not easy for wheelchair users. We had to help one couple; the elderly gent faced getting his stranded wife down from a very high kerb. We had to lift her down. The hotels are great, but the infrastructure around them is much less so.

This place is so different. Lovely spacious accommodation. Very clean and comfortable. Offering some nights a la carte some buffet and BBQ. Choice of meat ,fish or vegetarian for main courses . Salads help yourself . Beautiful homemade soups of which I do not normally partake in hotels, but this was so fresh and gluten-free. Accommodated my allergies and gluten-free without problems. Excellent service by the waiting on staff. Breakfast with live cooking station for bacon and eggs not sitting in a ban marie but served fresh and hot. Lovely wines not overly priced. Private out door sitting area with sun beds and outdoor shower but we also used the garden which outside our gate was also private without public path if you needed to move with the sun ( block 3 ) Only 1 hiccup involving the bathroom jacuzzi tap flooding the corridor but the offending tap was isolated the next morning leaving the spray head only for filling which was not a problem, a change of room was offered if I was not happy with the repair which I declined as I loved block 3 best. All in all one of the best experiences we have had in a long time. Only thing missing was the bar which was in a lovely area but never open.would have been a nice change than going back to our room after din ner as we were put on second sitting for dinner . There was one bar near the hotel but we preferred to go into costa cama before dinner or to the beach bar with occasional live singer then taxi back when dark as the pavements are very dangerous to navigate even with a torch. We found Esmerelda beach perfect for hot days. A fabulous walk to Sotavento lagoon easy enough . Or windy days stay in our garden and laze by the pool which we had mostly to ourselves. I would definitely return with out doubt

We stayed for 6 nights over Christmas. A magical place with a unique style. The place was spotless and the breakfast buffet was the highlight of my day. 10 mins to the beach & Spar Shop. The Junior suites were huge with private terrace and private courtyard. The bathroom was a bit tired with a cracked mirror and a badly placed shore in the centre of the room that I tripped on more than once. The staff were lovely. Would definitely recommend if you peace and privacy and sunshine is what you need.

A lovely and slightly different hotel with rooms in attractive pods well laid out and with sea views. Ours was a junior suite and comprised a large bedroom with 2 double beds, separate lounge with sea view, generous bathroom with a Jacuzzi and separate shower and toilet cubicles. The staff were all very friendly and the food was really tasty with plenty of choice.

Delightful hotel which is very different from the soulless corporate buildings nearby. Lovely gardens and wonderful self contained rooms. The breakfast choice is absolutely wonderful. We had bed and breakfast so did not eat an evening meal in the hotel. The restaurant that adjoins the hotel (Restaurant Del Gato) is outside the security gate - the food was quite good but the building itself is somewhat lacking in atmosphere - it is a pity they could not bring this restaurant into the grounds so that you could eat outside in the cactus garden rather than a dated marquee. It was also a bit strange for a 4 star hotel that you had to pay for coffee in your room - this would normally be free. The hotel itself would benefit from having a bar in the evening where you could chill with a glass of wine.

This is our third visit to Risco del Gato in 13 months. We do not understand why it is so quiet although we are delighted because it means it is such a wonderful relaxing holiday. You can sunbathe completely privately in your own three roomed bungalow apartment with its enclosed large private patio. As usual the food was abundant, and delicious. During the week the offer oscillates between speciality all-you-can eat buffet nights - Italian, Canarian, Barbecue - and set meals with a choice. A few British folk but mainly German, Spanish and French. Probably because the big UK tour operators do not frequent here. We use Secret Escapes. If you are looking for an all night bar, all day drinks at the pool, evening entertainment, or music blaring out all day, this is not the place for you. Hiring a car is cheap and there is so much to see in this quiet beautiful island. The beautiful and long sand beach of Costa Calma is at the foot of the Hotel's landscaped gardens but there are very many other fabulous and isolated sandy beaches within a short car ride. Yes the hotel is showing signs of age and is dated but rather quaintly so. But everything is painted regularly, there is no detritus anywhere and it is very clean. We have paid twice as much and stayed in a posh five star hotel in Gran Canaria where no light came into the room and the shower blocked up and overflowed into the room every time it was used. When Risco was built the best of room furnishings were used and they still stand the test of time. No showers overflowing for Risco! Oh did I mention the exclusive outdoor shower on our patios by the way! Love this place.

We stayed for a long weekend mid September. The pods are spacious, clean and comfortable although a little dated (does anyone use cd players anymore?). Having our own loungers and private table with a great view was very nice. There barely seemed to be any other guests around. There were empty loungers by the pool Saturday pm and we swam with the pool to ourselves. It does seem to be a popular place for slightly older guests. I think if we'd bought the kids with us they would have ruined the other guests peace and been frowned apon! The food was great, huge selection for breakfast. My favourite was all the fresh fruit. Four courses for dinner and all nice. The waiters were great, I was impressed how they switched from English to German with ease. The walk down to the beach outside the hotel is through a rough unappealing carpark but the beach was sandy and the sea good for swimming. The bit directly below the hotel did seem to be the naturist part but if that's not your thing you can easily walk round to the next bit of beach. If you're after night life and entertainment then this isn't the place for you but if you want peace and quiet and relaxing then it's great! The only negatives for me are that you have to pay extra for the coffee in your room and we did have to move pods due to none of the plug sockets working for the first day/night we were there.

This was our fourth visit to Risco del Gato where you can just relax and enjoy peace in a wonderful environment . The pods are such a good way of finding peace and quiet but still allow you to use the facilities of the hotel but if you are looking for music , entertainment or late night bars this is not for you . What also makes this place so special are the staff , from the brilliant Paco and his colleagues in the restaurant and the cheerful housekeepers everyone has a smile . In previous years the restaurant was their weakness but this time the meals were excellent and more varied . A car is a must and I would recommend a visit to Betancuria , probably the prettiest village on the island and for shopping Morro Jable , a town fifteen minutes away with branches of Mango and Hilfiger etc . We will certainly be coming back again next year.
