I arrived to stay here today, 26th July. Not very friendly at reception so I took myself off to the pool bar until my room was ready. A very noisy pool bar and seriously overcrowded. No spacing between sunbeds and the typical 'this is my sunbed' scenario with towels down and not occupied. Got to my room (badly signposted)...did not look like the photos!! Really old and dated. Very disappointed for a 4* hotel. Only here for 2 nights so I really wanted something special. Went for lunch and it was awful...chewy chicken, small range of salads and deserts. That was it...went straight to reception and checked out. Booked myself in elsewhere...superb.

I had a 14 day stay booked and paid for, but due to the Covid19 outbreak the Hotel had to close. Thank you Barcelo group a full refund has been received, still my group of choice. Excellent customer service

From arrival to departure, a series of unfortunate experiences. We arrived in Lanzarote for a long weekend via a booked tour i.e flight and hotel package. The tour agency had a shuttle to transport us from the airport to the hotel. When we got to Occidental Mar, the shuttle couldn't drive in, as the barrier gate won't yield. The driver tried calling with no luck and after some minutes of waiting ,we were dropped off on the road in front of the hotel. If only we had taken that as a sign of things being not well coordinated in this resort, we might have been less disappointed. We dragged in our luggage from the street to the hotel, still optimistic. Got to the reception and had a queue which took forever because only one person was at the reception. Perhaps that explains why the shuttle driver couldn't get anyone to help with the barriers to let us in. The receptionist was very slow at attending to people and obviously looked stressed. After a long wait, we finally had our turn, and she told us check in was only possible from 2pm. We offered to drop our bags while we wait out the 1 hr ish left. She gave us the room number, did all the paperwork etc so slowly. She took our bags, and gave us the assigned room details and key holder. We came back after 2pm to complete the check in. They told us the room was ready. No typical welcome/information about hotel/resort sevices etc. She didn't even point us to which direction our room was. At this point another colleague was there assisting at the reception, so I had to ask him which way to the room. Since they didn't give any welcome talk etc, I also had to ask about facilities, accesses etc, and was told all information was on the app, I should scan the bar code. Good luck to older folks using that app!!! Well we got to the room, and found out the key card was not in the key holder given to us. By this time we were already kind of tired with the whole disorganised and uncoordinated way things were going. We went back, they apologised and gave us the key cards. We got to the room again and it was dirty!!!. It was obvious someone had left earlier and the room hadn't been cleaned. While we were still in shock wondering what was happening, the cleaning staff came in. Well that confirmed it for us. We went back all the way to reception again. By the way, the distance from the assigned rooms to the reception was some minutes walk, so going back and forth was frustrating. Another apologising moment, and they told us they would prepare another room. We had to sit and wait again. By this time, the secret surprise my husband had requested for me had to be revealed because it was not done. He had requested some nice set-up including cake in the room for our arrival. One of the staff came to apologise and said she remembered his call few days earlier etc and we would get all of that in the new room. Surprise ruined ofcourse, but I was too tired to care. Finally they came to give us new cards for another room. We finally checked in after several hours since arrival. The surprise package was no where to be seen in the new room, and we were exhausted. All seemed well with the room till night time when cockroaches came out to play. I first noticed it in the bathroom on the first day, and throughout our stay, we had cockroach sightings daily in the room, bathroom and balcony. 3nights at the Occidental Mar, our room special request cake never arrived. On the 2nd day, we asked and was told it might have been sent to the first assigned room by mistake and we would have it in our room. Well second day passed again with nothing. By 3rd day, no one said a word to us, and we didn't bother. Well 4 days, 3 nights, we checked out and the special request was not fulfilled. We had a pcr test scheduled at the hotel, and asking the receptionist for directions was a terrible idea. Let's just say I had to take multiple trips to ask for the Pcr Doctor's office. This is supposedly a 4star hotel/resort, but it's either the staff are not trained on how to receive and welcome guests, or they are too overwhelmed with work to do things properly. You expect to arrive and have some handy tips given during check in e.g where to find the restaurant for breakfast, what time food is served, number to dial to reach the reception etc and some welcome smile at least. None of this. On the positive note, food was good and the hotel is located in an ok location but I won't recommend it. From the first minute of stepping into the hotel/resort to the last minute of check out, it was definitely not a 4star experience.

In relation to the incidents regarding the cleaning of your room, we would like to offer our sincere apologies as clearly we were not performing to our usual standards on this occasion; we also would like to inform you that since receiving your review a meeting has been held with our entire house keeping department with your review being used as the example to guarantee nothing like this ever happens again at our hotel and we thank you for bringing them to our attention as we have taken them extremely seriously and have learned from them. Please accept our most sincere apologies for the service imperfection you describe when ordering your welcome detail, and we regret the ones provided were not of your pleasantness. Lovely hotel, very clean and good staff, luckily the bus stops are just outside to take you north and south very cheap, I say this as because of covid there wasn't anywhere open nearby, we were all inc., good animation team, Anton, Luka,Lidiya, we also had a sea view, so not overlooked, you can go through a gate to the coast road but cannot get back in with your card and it is a fair walk round back to the hotel

We travelled in a quiet time with the pandemic, so our first few days were wonderfully peaceful. Then the crowds arrived and it became a bit Hi-de-Hi!!! Which I am sure if you have kids is wonderful, but not so great when escaping for some peace. The music was so loud by the pool - I asked many times for it to be reduced, and eventually it was reduced. Tuesday was day off for the Animation crew - Anton and Luca had amazing energy and great fun - so it was nice and quiet. Other days we found some peace by the sea. either on the rocks close to the hotel, or a walk / bus (very efficient) in the town. Its windy so great for windsurfing!!!! Food is plentiful and great choice. Lots of health safety, hand sanitising, distancing and mask wearing. There wasn't much gluten free food easily accessible. Stations for water and teas coffee etc. The pool is split in half and one side is heated, when we arrived it was nice and warm, but by time we left, it was not that warm. Lots of choice of activities in pool and out, dance class, yoga, interesting pool classes eg bouncing in the pool and cycling and SUP yoga. Bedrooms clean and bright and nice balcony - though it appears smoking is allowed on the balcony, so you had to breathe in others smoke. Bed comfy, has a topper, requested a duvet. Not sure the Air conditioning would be efficient in the hot hot summer but was ok for October. Big lines for checking in etc as often only one person at the desk Glad for the hotel that more people booking in as the one over the road (with the olympic pool) was closed down and felt like a ghost town.
