The setting in which this hotel is wonderful, at 1350 meters high, at the foot of the mountain range, the landscapes are impressive, and the flora and fauna very beautiful. The hotel has comfortable facilities, highlighting its first class restaurant, with spa, jacuzzi, vats, outdoor pool. The staff is very friendly and attentive. I think you can improve the experience more if you install air conditioning in the rooms.

My wife and I spent 3 nights at the Puma Lodge in April, 2013. I recommend the hotel, with some cautions.

The strength of the Puma Lodge is its location. In traveling to Chile over the past 20 years, I’ve looked to find hotels and inns in the middle part of Chile that take advantage of the spectacular scenery and remote locations of the Andes. Certainly such properties have been developed in the far north Atacama desert (in San Pedro de Atacama, among other place) and in Patagonia in the far south (any number of properties, including explora Salto Chico within the Torres del Paine National Park). However, outside of the Lake District, I hadn’t been able to find first class properties in remote locations relatively close to Santiago and the Metropolitan District.

Finding Puma Lodge changed that. It is about 3 hours south of Santiago (one hour (plus or minus) on paved roads, and two hours on gravel roads). As the website suggests, Puma Lodge was intended for heli-skiing. However, it is kept open all year, and so hiking opportunities exist outside of the cold months. At least in the dry season, it didn’t appear 4WD was necessary (although I had it). Rather, you’d simply want a high clearance vehicle, mainly for the last 3 or 4 miles of the drive in.

The fact that the warmer months were an after-thought when the lodge was developed is evident from the fact that the rooms aren’t air-conditioned. That wasn’t a problem for us, since the early April temperatures were in the low 50’s-40’s at night, and the daytime temperatures were in the high 60’s, low 70’s. But, I can imagine that the January or February temperatures would make the lack of air conditioning more of an issue (as some have commented). I’ve seen comments from management that something is planned – if you want to go in January or February, I’d find out what has been done on that front.

The warmer season also appears to bring wide fluctuations in occupancy, and thus in levels of staffing. For example, on the first of our three nights, there was only one additional room occupied (out of the 24 total). It was kind of cool having the lodge essentially to ourselves, but there weren’t many people around to provide service if it was needed (no spa attendant, no resident bartender). The second night, the lodge was full (due to a business group having a conference). The third night, roughly 6 or 7 rooms appeared to be occupied. On the second and third nights, many more staff appeared, and thus the level of service increased.

I perceive that Noi spent more in this hotel than they planned, thus necessitating the need to keep it open year round. That seems to have led to strange efforts to cut costs, such as not offering facial tissues in the rooms (so I got to blow my nose with toilet paper, for heaven’s sake). Little things like that leave a bad impression, and don’t really save that much money.

So, with this introduction, let’s cover the basics:

ROOM

Smallish, but comfortable, and more than adequate for the two us. Lighting was decent, except in the bathroom where the lights were strangely dim. The towels and linens were of first class quality. The bed was comfortable. The bathroom had a small high window that opens into the main hallway – given a chance for more air flow, but allowing noise to come into the room if you leave it open at night.

PUBLIC AREAS

Very expansive, generally well lit, and comfortable. The living room, in particular, was a very nice spot to read and relax before dinner each evening.

HOT TUBS

We reserved a hot tub on our second and third evenings. It took a little bit of work to get the temperature right (the small one was too hot, the large one too cool). However, once we figured it out, the setting was spectacular. With no light sources anywhere near, the night skies are unbelievable to those of us who live in metropolitan areas.

FOOD

Decent, with an occasional flash of very good. There were two options available for each course at dinner and lunch. Sometimes, these seemed a bit heavy. I did mention to the manager how we’d love to have a salad on offer, and at our final meal a third, salad, option was added.

The breakfast options were a bit more limited, but adequate.

SERVICE

Uneven. For example, on the first evening and at several of the later meals, there was no English menu card prepared (I know Noi has stated that one is supposed to be prepared in response to other reviews, but we were there, and none were offered even after inquiry on those occasions). That wasn’t too big a problem, since I speak a reasonable amount of Spanish, but could be more problematic for others.

On our second full day, the kitchen did prepare menu cards. At lunch, there was a dish offered as an appetizer that included octopus. We ordered it – it was very good. At dinner, there was a dish with a different name that also included octopus. Having enjoyed pulpo so much as lunch, we decided to try it in a different dish. Alas, it was the same dish – the kitchen had just changed the name.

On the day when the property was full, the waits between courses were fairly long.

During the morning of our second day, no guide was available for our scheduled outing, since the large group had occupied the guide present. That wasn’t a problem (knowing that the problem was going to occur, the guide gave us good directions for a terrific solo hike), but it wouldn’t happen at a property like explora.

Making our reservation was a bit more complicated that it should have been. I sent my initial inquiry, and promptly got a response. However, I wanted a three night package, instead of two nights. So, I asked if that would be possible. There was no response for a week – only after I sent a second email asking if the first had been received did I finally hear back. I almost gave up and booked another property (I’m glad I didn’t).

Our guide, JP, was terrific. I won’t go into more detail since we were there on his last two days. Hopefully, the lodge has found a replacement as good as JP.

THE ACTIVITIES

Fabulous. The hiking and scenery immediately surrounding the lodge are breathtaking. We went on 4 guided and one self-directed hikes. All of them were absolutely terrific. From the website, it appears that there are some hikes that start from locations at a distance from the lodge – in our case, every hike started from within a mile or so of the property. These hikes made our trip – pictures are attached.

THE CONCLUSION

The location of Puma Lodge makes up for many of the failings I’ve outlined here. The young manager is personable and interested in the well-being of his guests (he spent time at an explora property, so he knows what’s involved in a first class operation). I’m hoping that Noi will invest more in getting the word out about the warm-weather activities at the Lodge, since a higher occupancy rate would allow for better staffing – alleviating some of the quibbles I’m mentioned above. At a minimum, they can’t allow reservations to go a week without getting back to an inquiry.

If you like outdoor activities, and love hiking in spectacular settings, and are willing to be a bit flexible about your arrangements, by all means come for a stay at Puma Lodge (I’d recommend three nights, but not more). It’s worth whatever hassles you might experience.

After almost 2 hours of travel from Requínoa we arrived at the hotel, a terrible road but we looked for it. It is not the first time I went, I was struck by how neglected it was, a hotel from the Noi chain, even if it is winter, cannot have a swimming pool with green water, the neglected garden, the truth is that it is very disappointing and in bad taste. We asked for a coffee and something to drink… the girl who was at the bar kindly told us that she couldn't sell us anything since they could only serve the people who were staying at the hotel, and due to limited supplies they couldn't serve them… in the end They sold us 4 watery mocachinos with no taste at all… it would be good if the hotel reported on their website or here that they only serve people staying there! I would never go back again! What a lack of judgment on the part of the person in charge not to have foreseen that people may come simply to have lunch or drink tea.
Bad experience

We went from Rancagua along a long and bad dirt road with the idea of getting there to have tea and the manager treated us very poorly, very uncritical, although we did not call before to say that we were going to have tea, that does not justify not being able to offer a delicious coffee with something to eat. They didn't have anything, the only thing we could have was disgusting coffee. Very unfortunate, a wonderful mountain range environment, but the gardens look neglected, the pool green with dirt, a fiberglass hot tub that looked horrible from the living room, the truth is very far from recommending this place. It looks like a very bad place. A shame.

I understand the difficult situation for a hotel to keep running in a pandemic, but I was a little disappointed with details that should not be overlooked, such as the restaurant cleanliness. The hotel needs a general uplift, after a long period of probably no investment in renovations. The location of the hotel is magnificent. The fact that there is very limited connectivity contributes to a very resting stay.

It seems the hotel is going through financial problems. Very few employees for a hotel totally booked. The service at the restaurant and bar was poor. The food and drinks quality, also poor. Very nice horseback riding!

My Wife and I were looking forward to our stay here; the hype about this new lodge, the idillic location, were all very enticing. I took 2 days off my busy schedule for a one-night escape here, for what was to be a quite and secluded birthday away from it all. Unfortunately, this lodge is very far from being the great place to stay they advertise; mostly due to a ridiculous management attitude problem.

I called the Hotel the day before arrival, asking if it would be possible to get a quite room, away from any noise at the hotel. I was reassured, specially since I was told we'd probably be the one of the only guests there on that evening.

We arrived in the mid-afternoon, again referring to the importance of wanting a quiet room (this time, in person, to the girl checking us in at the front desk). We were 1 of 2 rooms booked on the entire lodge that evening. Our series of dissapointments culminating on a terrible experience here were about to start.

"The devil is in the details"... this is what all the really successful professional Hotel Managers of this world copiously know. It is attention to detail that makes the best hotels. Puma Lodge is very far from this. First of all, The NOI Hotel chain should really take more care and not induce guests into false advertising; All of the Lodge's rooms on booking.com are described as having "40 m2", when in actuality, the rooms are 28 m2, at the most (including bathroom and closet). I'm an Architect by schooling so of this I'm certain.

- It is very disenchanting (to say the least) to travel to such a hard-to-reach location, only to realise the rooms are almost half the advertised size. We couldn't believe how much smaller the rooms are from what's advertised when we walked into our room.

- There was a soiled piece of underwear (!!) from a (former guest??) in our closet. I promptly called the chamber maid's attention. They came in and grabbed the garment out of the closet, using a paper towel so their hands wouldn't touch the garment, but they couldn't care less about actually cleaning the area of the closet where this garment was laying...

- No minibar in the room. At almost USD $500 / night, one would expect a minibar in the room... The safe deposit boxes are so ridiculously small, they may just about fit an i-pod. There were all sorts of signs of cheap cost-cutting everywhere one looked...

- Time for dinner; on our way to the restaurant, we were simply "told" (not asked... told) that dinner would be served at the Lobby bar, since the restaurant was closed. When I called the day before and learnt the hotel would be empty, I specifically asked if the restaurant would be opened, and was told it would.... I complained, and thus they opened the restaurant for us. When we arrived, the restaurant was cold, since they'd clearly shut down the heating given the few customers around. Very, very unprofessional. We chose to walk back to the Lounge bar, where we ended up having our dinner, since it was warmer there....

- Next morning, we were very much looking forward to sleeping in, having breakfast in the room, and leaving for our exploratory trip. Unfortunately, our day was marred from very early on. It turns out that, despite being 1 of only 2 guests in the ENTIRE LODGE, we were placed side-by-side next to the ONLY OTHER guests in the Hotel !!! Very Noisy guests at that, who woke us up with incredible amounts of chit-chat and loud talking at 7am... Paper-thin walls, with ZERO sound insulation. I called reception and demanded to speak to the Hotel Manager, to get an explanation of WHY ON EARTH we were placed neck-to-neck with the only other guests staying there, specially when we asked the opposite. It was like it was done on Purpose...

- After several calls to reception and not a word from the resident manager for over 1 hour, I walked over to the reception. The Hotel's manager showed up; I explained the situation; I got a lame excuse about the booking having been automatically made by the hotel's SW. Not a SINGLE word of apology of even sympathy, uttered from the hotel's "manager"... not a single gesture of remedy, compensation, absolutely NOTHING. Only indifference and arrogance.

- I went back to the room, this time called front desk again, to have our breakfast brought earlier than anticipated, since we'd just been rudely awakened and no one gave a hoot, so we just wanted to have our breakfast and leave ASAP. My call served no purpose; breakfast was brought an hour later, not a minute before our originally scheduled time from the night before. A pungent smell of burnt food was the main scent of the breakfast brought in; a crisply charred fried egg. For heaven's sake...

- Wild cows were free to roam into the Hotel's garden and pool area, stomping on top of the few little decorative plants in the garden. Not a single employee cared enough to shoo the cows away while they tore the garden and happily drank water from them pool.

- We promptly left the room and proceeded to check out, where the same front desk clerk - as unapologetic as her boss - checked us out and charged us for what ended up being almost USD$ 600 for a single night stay plus a dinned we weren't even able to choose from, since there was only 1 dish available...

- Had to wait another few minutes before leaving, since 2 of the hotel employees had simply blocked the Hotel's front driveway with their parked trucks, having left them there all evening, under the entrance's awning, while the only guests' car (my car) was parked out in the uncovered area, waiting for the employees to move their trucks from the covered area, so I could leave...

- I Hope the proprietors of this lodge realise what a useless management they have here. And please fix the false room area advertising issue. I hope it's not the (unfortunately often usual case of) someone having been appointed manager here for family ties or other unprofessional reasons. But the way this place is being run now, it certainly looks that way.

What an experience... Dont know where should I start... the warm bottle of Veuve Clicquot in a bucket with no ice, but filled with breadcrumbs, waiters that didnt understand what was wrong with that, they even had to bring the bartender from upstairs to understand what was wrong with the champagne. A copy paper menu cut in half with scissors, filled of mistakes "sopa de cAbolla (cebolla) " and " cEnelones de jamon" (canelones) , no salad option....
The experience was flooded with things such as no bottled water in the bedroom, the hot tub damaged, the pool is not heated (their website indicates it is heated), the acustics of the room allowed us to hear the TV and shower of the room right next to us..... And to finalize the night there was a power outage ....

The directions we were provided proved to be pretty inadequate resulting in us not getting close to the hotel until about 10PM. After negotiating the tricky roads we arrived at a locked gate. The directions had told us a guard would be there but this wasn't the case. This meant I had to climb over the gate and trek 1.5 miles up a steep, rock strewn path while my wife waited in the car.
A very helpful and pleasant staff member took me back in a vehicle to open the gate and allow us entry. The staff in the restaurant also were able to provide dinner even though the restaurant was closed.
When my wife made the reservation she had enquired about booking a hell-fishing excision. She was told that this would be taken care of at the hotel. In the morning when we went to book a fishing excursion we were told that it was not fishing season. Very disappointing to make this kind of a trip and not be informed when making the reservation that fishing would not be possible.
The person that helped me the night before driving back to my wife was a guide, and we went out with him and another guest for a fantastic hike. The guide was very knowledgable and friendly and we really enjoyed the 4 hour hike into the surrounding mountains.
The restaurant staff were friendly and efficient, the food basic but well prepared and what we were expecting in a lodge. The bar area provided stunning views across the mountain range with a nice fire crackling away in the middle.
The following day we decided to do a solo hike up to the flat top rock that our guide had told us about. As we started this hike the first gate we came to was locked, meaning that once again my wife and i had to figure out a way to climb over a 10' high gate.
I did not hear from a manager during our stay about our initial problems.
I think the hotel has marvelous staff, is situated in an incredible location but seems tho suffer from some basic management type issues.
If you go do not rely on the directions provided, ensure that any activity you want to do is available when making the reservation and stress to someone that the gate needs to be unlocked. You may end up ruining a very nice pair of shoes as i did making that final climb on foot!

Es necesario un 4x4, pero terminarás con amortiguación dañada, neumático dañados, etc. El camino es muy malo. Tienes muchos lugares donde ir, donde el acceso es mucho mejor y en precio/calidad no vale la pena y el daño al vehículo.
