I stayed at XOC-Ha for my Intro to Cave diving course and some guided cave dives. As a scuba Instructor myself I could not have better words to describe Roger approach to diving. It is fun, it is safe and overall very enjoyable (even the part were you actually need to survive the infamous bubble gun!!). As a guest, the facilities are amazing and super cozy. They even have their own private micro cenote!! As a non-vegan, the food was beyond amazing. Nelly convinced me that vegan food can be awesome! Also, the prices are pretty fantastic. TL;DR. BOOK IT NOW.

In an area congested with dive operators and cenotes, Xoc-ha stands out from the crowd. Proprietors Nelly and Roger Williams are charming, fun, smart, irreverent and super knowledgable about local diving as well as most aspects of both recreational and technical diving. We were a group of 4 experienced North East divers and 1 newbie, whom they were able to accommodate with an instructor for AOW certification, while the rest of us did Cavern/Cenote tours. They custom fit our itinerary and skill level to caverns that changed every day and left us wanting more, to the point of planning a return trip for 2020 to complete Intro To Cave Certification. After being a scared, cave skeptic, I found myself making a quick transition from cautiously exploring cavern diving to thirsting to learn the skills to penetrate past the cavern zone, safely. Roger is a funny, engaging, knowledgable and opinionated guide and deeply skilled as a diver and as an instructor. You can’t not learn something from him, just be hanging around him, a type of instructional banter is just embedded into his personality. I am quite looking forward to class in May of 2020. Nelly is also an amazing cook. While being an ominvore, I don’t eat vegan much, but was quite happy, and full at all meals they provided, which are all vegan. In particular the lunch burritos, quiches, and tamales were quite tasty and filling. Hearty and healthy food for serious diving. Accomodations are inexpexpensive and comfortable. They would also alllow the budget traveller to be able to cook at home, if desired with kitchenettes in each of the casitas that they rent out as a B&B. To that end, the entire experience, from equipment rental, guide fees, food and lodging are well priced with tremendous value. For the taco fiend, and for nighttime activities, Tulum, Akumal, or Playa Del Carmen are just a short drive away. Psyched to get back down there and start training for Cave diving…

Where to even begin with this magical place? A group of 5 northeast divers for NYC stayed at Xoc-Ha for an 8 day trip diving the local cenotes. We would have stayed forever if we didn't have jobs to attend to back home. This place is truly a hidden gem that truly caters to divers, complete with lines/hangers to dry your gear, bins to transport your kit, a classroom "palapa" overlooking a beautiful pool and "ear beer" in the first aid basket in the bathroom. Nelly and Roger have left no detail unturned. Rooms: Since we were a big group we took over both guest houses, Casaroja and Casablanca both were clean, adorable and well appointed. The beds were comfy and there were plenty of towels. Casablanca is much bigger and will likely be more comfortable if you have two or more people. While we didn't cook on our trip, everything you could need to do so was provided including a full fridge, stove, coffee maker and microwave. Food: Nelly is an incredibly talented cook. She will stuff you silly with the best vegan cooking I have ever had. We were five meat eaters and still loved everything she made. Breakfasts of pancakes, waffles, chia pudding, avocado toast all delivered to your "palapa" each morning. Packed dive lunches were full 3 course meals, burritos, tamales, quiche with a delicious side and a grand finale of Nelly's amazing cakes and scones. The chocolate pound cake was out of this world. At night we would head into Playa del Carmen, Akumal or Tulum in search of tacos. Bring your stretchy pants! Diving: Mind-blowing. You won't believe this stuff lives underground! Roger is an amazing guide and his knowledge of the cenotes is unprecedented. He can cater locations to your skill level and each day you do 2 dives at a given cenote but each dive feels different as you go upstream and then downstream. His passion for cave diving is infectious. You feel like you are getting a private tour of the coolest hidden spots and you just want to learn everything you can from him. Since he only takes a small group you get a lot of personal attention and never feel like you are crammed into a packed tour. When he gives instruction he is kind, patient and encouraging. His stories of diving in the area are fascinating and we just couldn't get enough. At least 3 of us are planning to come back in 2020 to do Intro to Cave class with him because we were just so impressed with the caverns and with him as an instructor. Overall, just go! Roger and Nelly will wrap you up and make you feel like family. Their jungle retreat is just so relaxing. Away from all of the touristy resorts but centrally located to easily bop around to the surrounding towns to explore. Most of all, you get to dive and spend time with two amazing humans who are so passionate about what they do and just want to share it with you. We will be back!

Xoc-Ha is one of those hidden gems that’s so good, you almost hesitate to write the review out-of-fear to many others will discover just how incredible it is and then it’ll be harder to book yourself. But... it’s also simply to good not to share. If you love big resorts, this is not your place. If you LOVE diving, home comfort, home cooking, and passionate real people- you’ve struck gold. Roger and Nelly love diving almost as much as they love hosting. The diving is simply beyond words- and Roger’s passion for diving is infectious (although in my case perhaps it was more like Roger poured gasoline on the Pre-existing fire that is my love of diving). But the specialness doesn’t stop out of the water. You get home comforts combined with home warmth. And lastly, I gotta mention the food. I fall under the category of, “Adult who never learned to eat his vegetables” and yet Nelly’s cooking had me craving vegan food. Words even I am shocked I just typed. To put it simply, If you love diving and mind-blowing experiences- look no further.

Xoc-Ha BNB is a total package. Roger was our guide through cavern tours of the cenotes. He was incredibly patient as I worked out my proper weighting and also was an excellent role model with his perfect form in the water. The briefings provided before each dive was filled with geologic details about each cave/cavern. After a week of cavern diving my group rambled on about exploring the idea of possible cave certification our next trip (which Roger is capable of teaching). You will be inspired to want more! Roger's wife Nelly is also a guide and runs the BNB and cooks amazing meals. I am an omnivore but thoroughly enjoyed all our Vegan meals. Breakfast waffles, pancakes, french toast were the perfect start to any day. As a coffee snob I sometimes struggle when I travel but not this week. Your coffee will be strong and robust. My group chose to include lunch and dinner most days as well. The lunches were awesome burritos, quiche and more. Lunch also came with a nice sweet treat (cookies or peach cobbler). Dinners were yummy as well and also ended in a delicious dessert. We stayed in Casa Blanca which is a beautiful one bedroom cottage. You can sleep more than 2 with a roll away bed in living room (my group chose to do this). I had the cot and was very comfortable. The mattress was not a one inch foam pad but a real comfy thick mattress. The home was decorated by Nelly who has a beautiful vision for unique finds. The Xoc-Ha hospitality will make any level diver feel at home, wish we could have stayed longer than 7 days.
