We arrived at the Epavlis hotel at 2300 on a Saturday evening to be greeted by a very unfriendly lady. There was no greeting or any conversation what so ever. We got our room key and got told breakfast time and where the lift was. We were thirsty so asked if we could buy water, we got a abruptly told the pool bar was open until 11. We quickly put our bags in the room and rushed to the pool bar as we had been told it shut at 2300 and it was now 2305. As we expected the bar was shut. My husband and I went back to the lady at reception, we felt that we were a huge inconvenience. Throughout our holiday the lady and younger guy with long hair were just so rude and just made us feel so uncomfortable. To the point their unfriendly attitude was actually scary. It got to the stage that we would make jokes about whether they would actually say hello or thank you to them as we had to hand in our key to reception. It says that there is a 24 hour reception. As the hotel does not provide an evening restaurant we went out for food and drinks every night. Some nights we were late in returning to the hotel. Some nights we returned to the hotel to wait a while to get our key and on one of the last nights were told to take our key with us in future (when it clearly states in the hotel to not take any hotel property out-with the hotel). We were in Santorini for a wedding so we really needed an iron. Again it’s advertise on the Epavlis website under room services and hotel services that they can provide an iron. We asked the long haired guy at reception for the iron and he told us they didn’t have one. I challenge the fact that it was advertised that the hotel could provide an iron, he reluctantly said he would check. We did, in the end, come back that day to find an iron on the room!!! The advertised WiFi does not work in the rooms. The taps in the room are so tight and difficult to use and at times we had to run the taps for about 20 minutes to get hot water to come through. The hotel location is great. As it’s on the hill it gives a great view. The pool area is very nice and peaceful. Dimitri in the pool bar was the nicest person we met. There is a simple pool menu and he works hard to serve customers and provide what we asked for. He also made conversation and didn’t make us feel that we were an inconvenience. We had breakfast once. There is a nice range to choose from. The hotel is very clean and could have been such a great place to stay for the week if the staff were friendly and inviting.

Prior to our arrival in Santorini, I had booked a private transfer with the hotel from the ferry port to the hotel. On arrival there was no sign of a driver from the hotel or a sign with my name. After 20 minutes I rang the hotel. I was told to “look for a black van with a young man driving it”. (To give context tens of vehicles pass through the port, it’s very busy and a large majority are black vans). This made it impossible to find the driver. After another 40 minutes I rang the hotel again. This time the staff member said “I don’t know what else to tell you”. I asked the staff member to please ring the driver and get him to meet us outside one of the ferry offices. After another 10-15 minutes the driver found us...we received no apology for the mistake and were informed we would receive €5 off our transfer. On arrival to the hotel, the staff member that I dealt with over the phone was at reception. He didn’t apologise for the hour long wait in mid day heat either. We received absolutely no information on the hotel facilities, breakfast times etc. When we checked into our room we realised that there was no phone service or WiFi in the room which meant we had to sit out at the pool day or night if we wished to use our phones at all. There was no batteries in our safe or in the air conditioning remote so we had to request these the next day. The pool facilities are nice and the breakfast was plentiful and had a wide choice which was good. There is a bar at the hotel which serves a small selection of food which we didn’t try. In terms of location it’s situated very near Kamari beach which was very nice, especially at night for going out to eat at the beach restaurants. The customer service leaves a lot to be desired. We found the staff generally uninterested, unhelpful and unfriendly. When we were checking out, the hotel tried to charge us €200 more than the agreed price and I had to show my confirmation email to prove the agreed price- which again we received no apology for. Overall, the facilities are good except for the lack of WiFi and phone reception in the room, great location in Kamari. However, given the bad service we won’t be staying again.

Having traveled to a lot of places, this hotel is typical Greek standard. Do not expect anything special. Rooms very basic, you get what you pay for. Very steep walk up to it and a lot of visitors struggling to get up the hill. Cleaning staff work hard to keep the out of date rooms we were put in clean and tidy and looks nice from outside. Continental breakfast a let down however as you are on the edge of the village, you can walk in for a brekkie. As for the manageress / owner, not sure, her attitude and customer service skills absolutely disgusting. A confrontational, argumentative, screaming at her staff from her front desk so loud we could hear her in our room. It got so bad I tried my best to see if I could make her smile at least once. No eye contact, please or thank you, and in my opinion of 30 years customer face to face experience totally in the wrong job! If you are going here do not expect good customer service from this woman! Dimitri in the bar always smiling and Chris also good on front desk.
