I, my wife and our 7 years old daughter stayed in this hotel for 11 days at the end of August 2021.
We stayed in a family superior suite, large enough but with only one toilet.
The room and the public areas were very clean and well maintained. The breakfast and lunch gave us more of a "canteen" feeling rather than a high standard 5*S cuisine. The dinners were better presented but not very tasty.
I may say, good wine (we tested only some kinds of rose), but very expensive compared with other 5 stars resorts in Tyrol.
Very good service of the personnel and especially waiters who were very friendly, well trained and very good English speakers (special mention to Sandra and Thomas).
Very good and interesting childcare at kids club. Also interesting outside activities with Pavol who also is dedicated for this job. In the evening no activities for kids (disco, playing games, shows…) so the majority of kids are running between tables or sleeping in the restaurant or small bar. The indoor sport activities, very early in the morning or during lunch. Not enough activities for adults in the evening, just live music sometimes.
The service of the reception was very good.
Overall, with some points to be improved (evening activities and entertainment, schedule of the sports activities, the restaurant menu), we keep nice memories about this hotel, being a nice, quiet and kids very friendly place.

What an amazing level of service, on the same level with the most luxurious 5* service. Nothing was too much trouble and everything request was possible - prompt, courteous and caring service, amazing food, extremely friendly staff, attention to detail for children (not to mention a huge play area and fun swimming pool), fantastic wellness area, and the owner himself greeting us every evening and upon departure. What more is there to wish for from a family ski hotel? Perfect. Look forward to staying again next year.

My family is staying here on 11 -18 Feb 2024 for our Ski holiday.
First of all, the hotel and room looks nice. We like the room so much.

Back to reality:

To go skiing, we have to take the subway and carry ski by ourselves. I asked myself a question…is it a five star service? To be honest, we have been staying in many five star hotels. It is the first hotel that provides no services on this regard. The other 5 star will bring you to the slope or at least to the Tal station.
Also, the ski locker cannot be locked. Hmm, don’t ask me why.

You should not have any extra request from this hotel. They are not flexible to fulfill your request. Otherwise they will scare you. For example, my kids would like to see more options of DVD to select, the receptionist said to me: “We are not a DVD shop.” I got shocked when I heard this. Sorry to interrupt you with our problem!

To conclude, so far I think it is a 5 star for the price, but the service mindset of some staff needs to be improved a lot. I don’t agree that it is 5 star or even 5 star plus.

In light of the above experience, I don’t think I can recommend this hotel.

Response from Georg Schalber, Inhaber at Wellness-Residenz Schalber
Responded Feb 22, 2024
Dear Katethisanf. Thank you for your comments. As you should know it is not allowed in Serfaus to go to the Cable Cars by car. Serfaus is famous for its unique subway, which you can not find anywhere else. Thanks to it our guests and especially the children enjoy a village with very less personal traffic by car. So I am wondering what you ask us to do?? As a matter of fact we have no possibility to bring our guests to the skiresorts by car, as you wish.... We offered you a wide range of DVDs which we organized just for you, because our guests normally do not use this technology anymore. I can not see our mistake, sorry. So maybe Serfaus and our hotel is not the perfect place for you especially if you want to to go by car to the slopes and expect our staff to carry your equipment? Thank you for your friendly words on our rooms. With kind regards, Family Schalber

We stayed in Schalber for 10 days during the Christmas holidays. The food is amazing, the spa has everything what you can think of. There is a wide inside kids area with a lot of activities. The location is perfect - 20 m from the underground. The service is on a very high level. We were very lucky that we were served by Peter in the restaurant. Happy to come again in the summer.

I tagged along with my sister and her family to Serfaus earlier this month and we stayed at the Wellness-Residenz Schalber. I ski mostly in the Western US and Canada and have skied a bit in Switzerland. Serfaus was a completely new experience for me, which after four days I am ready to return again soon. This review would be especially beneficial for anyone who has never been to Serfaus, as it not only covers this hotel, but how it interfaces with the overall experience at Serfaus.

The brilliance of Serfaus and specifically this hotel is that they have looked at the skiing experience from the customer's point-of-view and they have optimized that experience. From the Dorfbahn (a darling four-stop subway) that takes you almost directly to the gondola boarding area, to the afternoon "tea" in the restaurant, to the luxurious spa, every detail has been thought out to smooth out any rough edges for the guests. While it is not a ski-in-ski-out property, there is no driving nor any long walks in ski boots.

We did not want to stay an entire week, and this property is one of the few who allow stays outside the week-long Saturday-to-Saturday format. It comes as no surprise that Saturday is a very chaotic day with traffic jams on the limited roads to and from the resort. The dominant nationality in Serfaus depends on the European school holiday schedule. The day we left, there was a huge infusion of Dutch.

Serfaus is on one street town, and the Schalber is the first property as you come into town. The gondolas are on the other end of the street. The first stop on the Dorfbahn is about 100 meters from the hotel. I literally never walked through the town of Serfaus, as the hotel catered to my every need outside of skiing,

Do not come here for après-ski. Serfaus is a family resort. The ski school is large and apparently well-respected. The slopes on which the school operates are only a small percentage of the overall mountain so it was easy to get away from the serpentine groups of young skiers. The better lifts (Pezidbahn & Masnerkopfbahn) are closer to Serfaus than to neighboring Fiss and Ladis, and minimized the time to get to the best skiing.

Most of the slopes are above the tree-line, which posed some real challenges during the first two days of skiing which oscillated between total white-out conditions and a maximum visibility of about 25 meters. I didn't care as I was knee-deep in fresh powder. The last two days opened up and were bluebird days, with classic Austrian views straight out of "The Sound of Music".

Speaking of the "The Sound of Music," the design of the hotel is clearly inspired by that aesthetic. There is a remarkably wide range of decorating styles and periods represented throughout the hotel, but they are all done with a complete commitment and, in a surprising way, work together in this environment.

In truth, who cares what the place looks like when you are soaking under the stars in an exquisite salt-water tub, or lounging in a Japanese steam room. The spa was absolute perfection and just an elevator ride away from our room. The spa has an older and a newer section, and although it is not enormous it has a wide variety of heat options that offer something for everyone. There were no children in the "over 16" spa as there was a separate spa for families.

Our room was the capacious "Schalbersuite" a two-bedroom suite with a pull-out bed in the living area located on the fourth floor overlooking the mountains. It was comfortable and well-thought out, with one exception: the room was as hot as a furnace. This was great for drying out the ski paraphernalia, but required us to open multiple windows every night to bring down the temperature to sleep comfortably..

The package included breakfast, a post-ski "afternoon tea" [more accurately a "snack"] and dinner in the restaurant. What a joy to make no decision other than what time we wanted to saunter down to "our" table. The food was was very attractively presented and creatively prepared with enough variation that we did not grow tired of it over the course of four days. Breakfast and "tea" were both served as a buffet, and dinner was a combination of table-service and buffet.

The staff was extremely courteous and helpful and for the most part spoke impeccable English. A gentleman in traditional Austrian dress, who I assume was Herr Schalber, made the rounds at dinner each evening. The presence of a family owner/operator seems to have maintained a high level of service throughout the hotel in a way you would never get at a Starwood property.

So in a nutshell, take me back (not on a Saturday), but please, turn down the heat!

The hotel is great for a family skiing week. The kids pool and the kids play area (with climbing walls, mini golf, basketball and tennis court) are really good features for the kids. The adults Spa, pool and gym are also excellent.

The food needs a bit of innovation, it all tastes quite similar and hasn't really changed over the years.

The free afternoon coffee is one of the best I have known.

The service in the restaurant is very good and friendly. At the reception they could make more of an effort and be more friendly.

The rooms are ok but it has gotten a bit dated, 90s style I would say.

The main drawback is that you always have to take the train to get to the slopes, with waiting and then getting the skies it takes 30 minutes and a lot of effort, especially with kids. Ski in and Ski out is what we really missed!

Also, Serfaus itself is lacking any kind of atmosphere.

We visited Hotel Schalber for a 5 nights stay in august 2015 and was more than pleased with the stay.

The room is typically Austrian with lots og wood. Very charming, very clean and always serviced to perfection. The view from the balcony is truely beautiful.

The food and the service was amongst the best we have ever experienced. The staff is very attentive in a professional and nice way. The food - breakfast and dinner - is outstanding, tasteful and served to offer you a feast for the eye as well as the palet. A huge winelist and the ability to get "something else" other than todays menu is a great plus.

The hotel facilities include a huge welness area, a nice fitness room, several dining rooms, a bar and if that's not enough you can enjoy a stroll in the village or the mountains.

The hotel charge includes the price of the lifts to the mountain and there are a plenthora of paths to walk along. All-in-all a hotel that must have a lot of return guests and we will join the flok at the first opportunity that comes along.

Tips:
If you want to eat outside during the summer mohths, remember to reserve a table in the morning. Also parking is a bit tricky so remember to reserve a parking lot in the "Tief Garage"

My children and I just spend 5 days at the Schalber.

The Plus: decor of the hotel (many small and cosy areas, with different moods and atmospheres), friendliness and efficiency of the staff, great quality of the food (plus delicious snacks at 4PM), fun kids menu, outstanding wine selection, amazing spa with incredible selection of saunas/steam rooms/relax rooms (even an outside salt water plunge pool and outside pool), great treatments (and possibility to get same day bookings).

The Minus: not located on the slopes (10 minute train ride to the slopes), no ski equipment rental facility in premises, all explanations in the spa (on the front of the various saunas, hammams, ice grotto) are in German (mostly german speaking clientele), rooms and bathrooms rather small (my children and I took turns in the bathroom).

Overall: recommended if you don't mind not having direct access to the slopes.

How do I get to the lifts? Where and how do I park my car? How much does it cost?
Answer from Familie-Schalber
You can use the "Dorfbahn" of Serfaus. The Dorfbahn is an underground driverless cable railway with air cushion suspension which operates in the municipality of Serfaus. Distance to The next station "Parkplatz" is about 50 m from the hotel. Parking: You can park your car in front of the hotel for free (outdoor) or in our parking-garage for € 10.00 per day Kind Regards
