Gitonia tis Irinis on Koufonisi is a characteristic example of Cycladic hospitality and harmony, an artistic and architectural creation of Antonios Mavros. Each house is autonomous and from its veranda offers guests a sea view of tranquility and an aura of sea breeze. It is an ideal destination for those who love and respect man as an integral part of nature.
Places to stay are graded on a 0-100 scale. The higher the grade, the easier it is for travelers to find restaurants and things to do within walking distance.
The name of this "village of houses" means "the neighborhood of peace" and describes it perfectly: many houses painted blue immersed in lush vegetation (figs, vines, prickly pears, especially bougainvillea) and silence. In the evening I loved to stay and read and drink ouzo on the veranda (every studio has it) enjoying the sound of the sea. The location is great: just outside the village, which can be reached on foot in a few minutes. our studio ("Amartia", a studio apartment for two people) is painted blue even inside, which creates a pleasant dim light even in broad daylight. There is no air conditioning, but the shovel on the bed is more than enough. The furniture is essential (two chairs and a table both inside and on the veranda, a fairly capacious wardrobe); there are various points for hanging clothes and other things (which is never obvious), even in the bathroom. We must emphasize the courtesy, sympathy and helpfulness of Florian (the handyman of Gitonia) and his wife. Much appreciated the pack of six bottles of water that made us find on arrival and the daily change of sheets and towels. It 'was a stay of pure relaxation and tranquility; if I ever return to Koufonissi I would book here again.

We spent 5 fantastic days in Gitonia is Irinis last week. The place is unique, it looks like a tiny old Kicladic village with a small church in the middle, all the rooms have a sort of private little garden with plenty of flowers and a patio where you can enjoy your breakfast and relax. You have everything you need in the small kitchen and now everything is painted in light blu. The only little limit is the bathroom, the shower has no curtains . The staff is fantastic. Thanks Florian and see you soon 😊

After a great stay here in 2018 we decided to return. So glad we did. This unique and picturesque "complex" of traditional Greek rooms is just as gorgeous. The blue painted rooms all have their own shady verandahs and the whole site is extremely pretty, complete with small church in the middle. See the website which accurately describes the complex and how the rooms were designed and constructed. Gitonia tis Irinis is well managed and it shows. Rooms are immaculately clean and well maintained and very comfortable. We were able to book the same room we had 2 years ago and it's as lovely now as it was then. There are different sizes/styles of rooms, but ours had a spacious bedroom (fridge in one corner with kettle and few cups and plates) and bathroom. Some have a kitchen area. A very comfortable room with screens on the windows and a fan (no aircon). From Gitonia tis Irinis it's less than 10 minutes walk to Chora and the port, passing one of the beaches. If you go in the other direction it's a 10 minute walk to Finikas Beach where there's a restaurant right next to the beach. Location could not be better and value for money is outstanding. Highly recommended.

in June I was in this resort in koufonisia, beautiful island to visit completely on foot with beautiful beaches although very breezy. the resort is located in the center of the village near the most beautiful beaches of the island. Rigurdo at the resort to say gorgeous is little, it is fabulous in Chalkidiki style all colored blue with gardens full of flowers of all colors. The apartments all have their own entrance with a terrace with a beautiful view of the sea. The interiors are fabulous with a small kitchen with fridge and stove with a bed or double and a private bathroom with shower. Beauty lies in the attention to detail designed by a good architect. Driving around the island I noticed that the aforementioned structure has no comparison with any other in its truly unique architecture. Cleaning as a 4-star hotel with linen change every 2 days. Dear manager and his family. Thank you for all the attention and guidance provided.

Had an absolutely cozy and well serviced time at this awesome place. The hosts were very attentive, and the studio was unique in design and functionality (today's architects no longer build such beautiful spaces). Porch shaded by beautiful trees, at a secluded location, and at an optimum distance from both the town and the beaches. Truly a beautiful place with excellent hosts!

If you are looking for a quiet and very beautiful place to stay with your family or friends I highly recommend Gitonia tis irinis. The moment we arrived to their place was really perfect moment for us because we were looking for a calm, quiet, peace and relaxed atmosphere. You'll surely feel the restfulness and tranquility by the sound of the sea and all the flowers that are around the houses. The houses are beautifully built and unique, where each one has its own features that stick in your mind and make you feel relaxed. The owners and staff are very polite and correct. We took a lot of photos and videos. we had a great time and we are very happy that we went there and we can't wait to do it again. 10/10 🤍💙

A truly special place and an oasis of authentic Cycladic beauty. Gitonia tis Eirinis is a series of independent carefully crafted houses each with unique architectural features designed by Anthony Mavros aka the Greek Anthony Gaudi. Each house is private with its own veranda with trellises covered in bougainvilleas, jasmines, and grapes.
We come here every year all the way from California for several years to recharge and recuperate. Year after year we end up extending our stay at Geitonia tis Eirinis. Every time it’s hard to say goodbye every and every time we keep returning to a place where we can feel connected to the history of Cyclades and the wild beauty of Koufonisi. Highly recommended to those in search of reconnecting with what’s important in life.

Our stay was awful, on check out the receptionist charged us a different amount than the one that was agreed on booking by phone and he told us to solve this misunderstanding with the owner. Indeed we found the owner inside the complex and he was very rude he started yelling at us and became very hostile and started moving very agressivly towards us. we were three girls and we got really scared.we travelled quite a lot and this was the worst experience by far. I wouldn't recommend anyone to stay there. This owner is a disgrace for the well known Greek hospitality he should be ashamed.

Response from mhadzipetrou, Guest Relations Manager at Gitonia tis Irinis
Responded Aug 6, 2016
Indeed, the stay of these three women in my accommodation was by far my worst experience in 17 years of operating. They invaded my personal space and threatened to vilify me and my business on the internet in front of a well-known Greek director whose name I won’t mention as a witness. They refused to pay the cancellation fee for their early departure and it is worth noting that they were getting a discount of 10€ per day. They were bothersome and noisy and behaved offensively towards me and their neighbors for the duration of their stay.

When visiting Koufonisi in general, or an apartment-hotel like this one on Koufonisi, you should leave your standards behind - and not in a bad way! Let me explain why:
Koufonisi is a very relaxed, laid-back island in the Cyclades. One might call it under-developed or one might claim that this is just the character of the island.. It is really quiet, there are really few (REALLY few) shops, few taverns, only 2 super-markets ("super" being an exaggeration), one bakery (with delicious bread, but still, only one).. Of course it is a beautiful island, very, very small, but beautiful, with dreamy beaches and the bluest sea you've ever seen.. Seriously. BUT, again, it is really, really quiet. So, you might need to make your peace with this before visiting this island. Though, I must say that the visitors on the island were not your average tourists: even the crowd on the island are also laid-back, civilised and quiet. Luckily there were no children and no elder people (probably due to the lack of the basic infrastructure), so this is actually a plus. The could also be described as trendy or alternative. Or something. You get the picture.
This particular hotel (apartment-hotel perhaps??) is no different than the rest of the island. It comprises several smaller houses, built in the typical Cycladic architecture, so that you'll get the full Cycladic experience. It is a really quiet place, since in the vast expansion the houses are scattered here and there. There is a domestic feel to it; there is no breakfast, no TV, and in general it is NOT your typical hotel. This might also be an advantage. There is a smaller house that serves as reception. Yet, I must say that the owners were more than happy to oblige whenever we requested anything: from a hair dryer, to a ride with their van. They even offered us rakomelo (a local, traditional drink), and may I add, in abundance! The cleaning ladies would clean our house daily and provide clean towels and sheets. So, yes, this is neither your typical island nor your typical hotel, but you must understand that this is the character of the island in general. This is not the place to seek and meet your typical standards, to satisfy your 'urban' demands. This is a place to reunite with the simpler life and relax. Definitely not my type of holidays, but in the end me and friends did have a good time, because we got to get away from the urban scenery, or the typical urban, perfect hotel, and perhaps this is partly the magic and appeal of the island. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone who travels to Koufonisi.
(don't bother bringing a car, you can go anywhere on foot. And also, don't mind locking also.. Noone is going to steal anything, because honestly, where would they go...?)

I recently had the pleasure of experiencing Koufonisi and in particular, Gitonia tis Irini’s, or Irene’s Neighbourhood. The name “Irini” in Greek means “peace.” And indeed, this complex of single-level studios is the definition of a neighbourhood of peace.
The owner and creator of Irene’s Neighbourhood is Antonis Mavros, who is sensitive about preserving traditional architecture and design. He built and designed each studio to reflect a previous era where construction materials were gathered from the immediate environment, hence the rooms have thatched ceilings with reeds and wooden beams. The interior is adorned with an archway and windows with wooden shutters that close from the inside. There are no TVs in this neighbourhood, nor is there any AC. I was there in April so it wasn’t a thought, but I was told that in the summer heat, the rooms are cool given that the windows were deliberately set in a way to take advantage of the wind direction so there is a constant draft. The showers spill out rain water which leaves you feeling great and the studios are equipped with a kitchenette so you can prepare your own coffee or food and enjoy it on your private balcony.
The complex was built in harmony with the natural landscape of the island and includes a lavish garden that is wonderful to stroll through. It is dominated by mature geraniums with hot pink and red flowers mingled with rosemary bushes, other herbs and palm trees.
A stay at Gitonia tis Irinis is like going to another world, an ideal place to enjoy peace and tranquility, along with the company of others who appreciate its surroundings. My camera wasn't working while I was there so to see photos visit the Gitonia tis Irinis website at www.koufonisia-diakopes.gr
Koufonisi is a wonderful island to explore on foot. It has spectacular beaches, cliffs and crystal clear tourquoise and blue waters. Pori, located on the north-east coast of the island is a stunning oasis and there is a bar/restaurant called Kalofego, that serves scrumptious meals and thirst quenching drinks in an ambience that makes you realize how privileged you are to be there.
And in the town center, Stella’s Taverna. Everything on her menu is worthwhile especially her cheese pie, fried squid and fresh fish!!
