An oasis of peace, equipped with all amenities. Near the beach (walking distance). Small but cozy town within walking distance. And a great base for trips in the Coromandel.
Delicious breakfast, friendly staff. You can cook in your own chalet and you can even wash and dry there

The setting is very good, with private cabins set in the bush around a central restaurant and bar area, the rooms are well appointed and clean. The staff were all friendly and helpful. It would have got 4-5 stars, but the pillows in the rooms were terribly uncomfortable, and the food was distinctly ordinary for the price. We only ate in the restaurant on the first night of a three night stay.

Wow this place was amazing, the accom room was fantastic, we checked in and our little chalet was amazingly cute, all wood panelling and just beautiful. We had everything we needed - fridge cooker, washer, dryer, all the necessities, was great after we had been travelling a few days.
We couldnt sit on balconey as too many mozzies :( this was dissapointing as it was in like bushland and you almost felt like you were in a rainforest environment.
Had a drink at the rooftop bar and quite pricey and you could only order hot chips - no cute cheese plate or anything yum, just chips, a lot of the guests were moaning about this as we were told to go here for happy hour and so we did but didnt realise you couldnt order food.
Very private and nice
You have to park far away but they do offer a shuttle if need be.

Dear isjoelost, We very much appreciate your comments regarding your stay at the Grand Mercure Puka Park Resort. It is always a pleasure to receive positive feedback. We are custodian of a beautiful native land filled with native flora and fauna and thankful to be in the vicinity of this, i am glad that you were able to enjoy the Chalet amenities and the environment. As we live a la natural in the native garden does attract natural habitat invaders like the mozzies, especially when we have had such a tropical weather and rains have gushed all the lands wet. We are looking at our F&B offering and hoping to expand this in due time and serve NZ on a plate and unique to this destination, as our team numbers build up we should be able to achieve this in coming time. Thank you for staying with us and enjoying the space we call Puka Park. We hope your next visit will be as pleasant as the previous one. Sincerely, Rajat Sharma General Manager

Luckily we called the hotel to say we would be very late, and they left a note and key for us outside as they close at 9pm (which we thought was rather strange for a hotel of this calibre.)
That said, when we did deal with the Receptionists, they were all excellent.
Breakfast: undrinkable coffee from the machine, and the cooked breakfast was lukewarm and unappetising. I couldn't even bring myself to try it.
This was true on the three mornings we ate there, so we had fruit and toast/pastries instead.
The service here was haphazard, and we had to ask for our replacement coffees 20 min after we arrived on the first morning, despite being only one of two couples in the restaurant.
Our bedroom and en suite were spacious and welcoming though the ancient loo brush was a big no no. We didn't eat in the restaurant in the evening as our breakfast experience was so poor.
The location of the hotel is some distance from the 'town’, so do take this into account.
It wouldn't take much to take this hotel up a notch, and replacing the coffee machine (and the loo brush) would be a good start.
I would have given the hotel 4 stars had it not been for the very poor breakfasts.

Loved the tree house feel of the rooms. We sat on our balcony with a drink surrounded by tree ferns and birds.
All of the staff were lovely and very helpful, but like many places, they were obviously struggling with a lack of staff.
The guest laundry was very useful. $10 for use of the washing machine and tumble dryer (including washing liquid). It took about 1 hour 40 which we spent by the pool.
Food choice in the restaurant at dinner was limited, but that meant that the quality was excellent. Breakfast options included fresh fruit, yoghurt, pastries, and hot choices (eggs, bacon, sausages, hash browns).

We had a 13 day stay that we booked 12 months ago. Stayed as part of the Accor Vacation Club. We feel as though we were given the worst room in the property. Poorly maintained room and facilities. Had to clean all kitchen items before using and wipe the thick film of dust out of kitchen cupboards. Told there was a communal laundry and led to believe that was it. Other members had washing machine facilities in their room. Housekeeping staff were the heroes of the stay.
Poorly maintained garden beds and overgrown vegetation, causing more bugs and bees to inhabit the property than should be. The room was damp and smelt mouldy. This was like glamping, not a resort.
Would have left earlier if we could have flown home. Would not recommend, nor return. EVER!.

Room was a cabin located in wooden area of forest. Lovely location. Room was large and comfortable. Nicely appointed. Very comfortable bed/pillows. Small kitchen area to cook, washing machine/dryer and a large bathroom. Restuarant was fabulous and the food was amazing. Despite the noted lack of staff, the staff that were present while busy were attentive and provided high level of service. Breakfast was good too despite no coffee (ran out) on a public holiday weekend. The location of the property is hilly and parking not available near the cabins. Not a bother to us, but might be an issue to others who may have mobility issues. Sitting/reading/bar area was lovely with a fire (not on while we stayed but could see how lovely it would be on a cold day). Would recommend. Hotel located in nice seaside town, close to many tourist attractions. Would stay again.

What an amazing locale and wonderful experience. The accommodation units are spacious and comfortable, and we especially loved the many windows which brought in the spectacular forest views surrounding our unit. With both kitchen and laundry facilities as well as a comfortable bed this truly felt like a home away from home in a little slice of paradise in Pauanui!

Booked in for 3 nights over the Christmas period. First the positives. Every single member of staff we encountered were super friendly and really helpful. The room was certainly large enough, the bed was huge and comfortable and the wi-fi and TV channels were great. Water pressure in the shower was just about OK and it's a good job we weren't afraid of the spiders in bathroom (I realise that being in the bush, we could expect and number of critters). The pool, spa and sauna were all very good. Nothing wrong with the location.
My main gripe about our stay would be to do with the restaurant. We ate in the there on our first evening and, honestly, we paid a lot of money for some very average food. (I should note that we ate breakfast there as well, and they were fine, your usual hotel breakfast fare.) We also paid for the Christmas lunch buffet, which, I have to say, was disappointing. How can you do a Christmas lunch without turkey, stuffing, brussel sprouts or roast parsnips? The individual items were good though and we definitely left very bloated.
Overall, a pleasant, if costly, stay.

Dear FatRat121212, thank you very much for staying with us on the beautiful Coromandel. We greatly appreciate your wonderful feedback, thank you for taking the time to share with me and the team. Our food and beverage experience has let you down a bit, we are in the building stage with the shortage in the qualified staff we are pivoting to what we can do with the resources we do have. I thank you for your constructive feedback around it. We are thrilled you enjoyed your stay. Many thanks again and we hope to be able to welcome you back in the future. Best wishes, Rajat Sharma General Manager

This is a difficult review to write. I had never heard of the Puka Park before booking. It was a member of Accor and seemed pretty nice. A few days before arriving two separate friends in the Tauranga area were in awe that we were staying there. Exclusive accommodations, helicopters ferrying guests to Rotorua. It's not really my crowd but I was curious to see what we had arranged.
Alas, the jet setting glory days have passed, and the Lodge seems to be struggling to find its place. Overall I was quite pleased, the location and views were good, the main lodge had some great features, our chalet was large with a modern bathroom and a private deck. The staff were very pleasant and meals were fine (a new chef started the day of our arrival). My Accor membership provided a nice discount on dining.
However, the Lodge is lacking in certain areas if it want to get back to the level of service it appears to once have. The rooms and lounge area have a musty smell (I know, there has been a historic amount of rain this month but I suspect that may not be the culprit). This must be addressed. There is clearly a staff shortage. The very personable staff are working hard but need more experience and training in providing this level of service. Menu and food and beverage offerings need to be expanded and upgraded (breakfast).
Good luck, I am cheering for you and hope to one day return.

I am pleased to see overall your experience was a positive and yo are right with the comment around finding its place as we are starting to build the place back with its acumen and service. Summer has been more like a monsoon and the vicinity we reside in is full of beautiful native bush ahs made the dampness quadrupled. Out fittings in the rooms especially our carpets and curtains has absorbed the humidity and made everything wetter. Something we are working on now. Thank you again for sharing your experience, and we hope your next visit will be as pleasant as the previous one. Sincerely, Rajat Sharma

Dear Gena,
yes, of course this is a common issue and Cadgiebin explained it very well. The only problem is if the conference room is in use the entrance will have to be through the back of house area, which we can organise, however please note this is not the guest experience we aim to offer. To answer your question, we would love to welcome you to Grand Mercure Puka Park and we do have a lot of guests with walking problems staying as long as you are aware if it that it is a very hilly terrain with steps.
Best regards,
Mareile Jerosch-Hoehn

The drive from Auckland airport was under 2 hours, we got lost and I'm hopeless with GPS's, and to say I was the passenger! If you hire a car, you will benefit as you can stop and go where ever, and believe you me, there is pretty spots along the way that are just gorgeous. Coastal routes are very scenic, they have a few bridges that are one way only, so beware, but otherwise its a beautiful country and easy country to get around, I'm sure you will love it, like we did.
Hi there
Sorry I'm not too sure. It is a long way from any airports so my advice would be to get a rental car as it will be the easiest way to get around.
Hi, e pool is open. We heat is by solar at the moment but changing to heat pump early in the new year so should be heated. I would check again in the new year to check the timing of the installation
The Resort Restaurant is fantastic, or there is the option of dining in Pauanui which has several reasonable Restaurants.
There is also the Golf Resort Restaurant 10 minutes drive from the Resort.
Whittianga is around 45 Minutes Drive and there are 6 or 7 very nice restaurants located there.
