Detailed Reviews
We stayed at the Bastion for three nights. Breakfast buffet was a bit expensive. McDonald's was next door so we had breakfast there. The shower for the bathroom was a nozzle extending from the wall with a shower curtain. There was no enclosed area for the shower so the whole bathroom floor was constantly wet.
Bus stop was within walking distance and took us directly to the train station.
Basically, this was a place to rest our heads and not to spend too much time in. The price was reasonable for quality of the hotel.

This hotel was easy enough to get to, with kind staff and good amenities within the place. From central station, it is easy enough to navigate as you get a sprinter train straight through to Haarlem and from there you can get a choice of a few buses that travel out the way to the hotel.
The total travel time with consideration of beginning at Amsterdam central, it took approximately 40 minutes, which isn’t bad considering it is a reasonably priced hotel.
The hotel itself is clean with everything you need, equipped with a hairdryer, safe and even a gym, Which I found useful.
My only concerns about the rooms were the bed size. The double room itself is a decent size with wiggle room, however it would be concerning for larger guests to squeeze themselves into the narrow bed. This was not an issue for myself or my friend staying, however would have liked to have a little more comfort. Nevertheless-we did sleep well.
Check out time was 12pm, which was good considering our later flight and didn’t need to rush ourselves to get out, and was able to take our time.
Overall would recommend as the price is affordable for a nice weekend away to stay safely close to the centre.

We were in Haarlem for 5 days for a family wedding in the area. The hotel was well positioned for both the wedding venue and for taking public transport to Haarlem and Amsterdam in the few extra days we had. We were on the top floor and had great views. Although there's a drive in Macdonald's downstairs, we were not disturbed by any noise, either from outside or inside the hitel. We had a deluxe bed which was very wide and comfortable. The staff were very helpful and attentive. The manager Dionne was extremely understanding regarding a booking issue and sorted it for me.
We would receive and stay again.

We have just had a week at the Bastion Hotel Haarlem Velsen. We arrived about 11pm and the desk was open and the staff was so helpful. After 26 hours travelling it was so good to have a welcoming face to register us. I lost my mobile phone while in Netherlands and the day manager was able to locate it for me and I got it returned. I can highly recommend this hotel for your stay in Netherlands. It is not located in the city so was quite rural and quiet. Will stay there again next year when we travel with a party to a conference.

Just under two weeks so got to know the place quite well
Good Points
Location, free internet, parking, motorway access, reasonable breakfast, soundproofing
Bad Points
The hotel is a bit dated, needs some serious spend and investment, bowls and spoons always need to be asked for at breakfast (why?), towels that were past their best 5 years ago, rooms and decor a bit worn, single beds very narrow, don't bother asking for them to make you eggs/ omelette for breakfast - really not worth it, restaurant food not great nor value for money, laundry service not acceptable (cost of and non-delivery), expensive stay for what it was.
It was a busy time so I was booked there by others as availability of other places was very poor. Would I stay there again?....no.

I joined a friend to stay in this hotel. The location is not near the centrum but convenient to catch a bus since the stop bus in front of the hotel. It take less than 15 minutes to go to train station or centrum with the bus. Beside the hotel there is MC Donald so it is convenient when you need a quick bite and on emergency. The hotel lobby is simple and the room is big enough for European size and very clean. The bath room is big and clean with hotel amenities.
The price is reasonable for European / Holland price. It is worth it to try when you have to stay in the area

It's a budget hotel and so there's no faffing about and there's no frills. Being pleasantly greeted on arrival by reception staff with flawless English was nice.
Despite being a budget hotel, the room was surprisingly large, and the bathroom was excellent.
I and a colleague ate in the restaurant which serves simple food done well (I had schnitzel, my colleague had beef stew; both were tasty and filling) at a reasonable price.
Breakfast, though, was little short of chaos, and I think I know why. There's a line for the buffet and it terminates at the coffee machine. The problem arises because you can get your breakfast from the buffet before the person in front of you has got their coffee - because the machine is a bit slow (makes great coffee, though). A logjam builds up and even those people who don't want coffee are now stuck.
Being a Briton, I am automatically a world expert at orderly queuing, and I would suggest separating the food buffet from the coffee machine. This would remove the bottleneck and let people who don't want coffee with their breakfast to get to their table quickly.
