When the 1st exchange you have at reception is “wat is jouw naam / and what is your name?” rather than “welcome”, it doesn’t create a friendly atmosphere. The theme carried through to dinner. Staff are not trained to be customer focused, but process driven. Until we asked our waitress to go check with someone, it was ‘impossible’ to have a soup at dinner whilst sitting outside. Overall, the service and connection with guests is pretty poor. We really felt as though we were part of the summer guest production line. This was topped off when we asked for our room key after walking in the village to “if you know your room you can take your own key”. Our dinner was also nothing special. A seafood bisque with a slice of smoked salmon was new to me; and ordinary. Our room on the other hand was fine. Clean, comfortable and quiet. The only thing was the wifi didn’t work in the rooms. But for the rest it was ok. In conclusion, a fine place to stay, but there are much much better places to eat where there is a connection with the staff. …
We had a 3 way course diner at this hotel and were very curious what the quality would be. The menu had limited choices 4 starters and 4 main courses and also 4 desserts. But what a meal we had. Completely surprised by the quality, taste and looks of the food. It was just great. I like going out for dinner but this was something to share. The service was also very good. Never expected that so it was quite a surprise.
In the middle of beautiful Schiermonnikoog a very nice hotel. The rooms are clean and you have youre own bathroom/toilet. You can have also dinner at the hotel. Breakfast is excellent. Nice staff too.
Often enough, hotels in island resort venues forget that they are, first and foremost, hotels. Every island traveler has had the disappointing experience of discovering that what appeared to be a luxury resort property is little more than a scaffold for pictures of local tourist attractions or a warehouse for uncomfortable beds. Not so at the Graaf Bernstorff. This fine facility delivers a lodging experience that would rival that of any upper-echelon hotel in any major city. The first ovation for this fine facility pertains to the rooms. Avoiding the aforementioned temptation to festoon the walls with local images, the designer for the Graaf Bernstorff has opted for a fresh, progressive, and modern approach, deploying contemporary furnishings (with an occasional nostalgic accent piece) and invigorating the major walls with large, robustly colored, and always innovative paintings and mosaics. Beds, although slightly puritanical insofar as what is called a "double" is really two twin beds pushed together, are comfortable and ensure a good night of sleep. Our experience was probably enhanced by selecting a deluxe rather than a regular room, but expectations for that upgrade were also exceeded when we discovered that we also had a charming hedge-enclosed private patio looking out over a verdant courtyard. A second ovation goes to the Graaf Bernstorff staff, which is clearly the best-trained hospitality ensemble on Schiermonnikoog. One of our party unfortunately came down with a cold on the way to the hotel; despite an early arrival, the hotel staff instantly arranged for earl;y check-in without any additional charge. Similarly, to accommodate the departure ferry schedule, the staff graciously extended checkout time by two hours. Overall, the staff evidences a high level of helpfulness as well as discretion. The Graaf Bernstorff is collated with a cheerful cafe that serves some of the best cuisine on the island and that offers al fresco dining right in the town center of Schiermonnokoog. Although the menu is oriented toward sandwiches and pub grub (with a few main courses), the dishes are executed with confidence and skill and could compete with those at any top-quality gastropub. For fans of afternoon tea and coffee time, a scrumptious apple tart is available--and highly recommended. The Graaf Bernstorff is remarkably economical for a high-quality hotel in a high-volume resort area. Costing only a few Euros more than the run-of-the-mill hotels in the same area, it is well worth the minimal extra expense. A stay at the Graaf Bernstorff is a delightful experience, from check-in to departure.…
We booked the 2bedroom apartment and had ample space for the three of us. 2 twin beds in each bedroom, a large wardrobe in one and multiple coat hooks in the other. Bathroom had a shower in a bath and some basics like shower gel and shampoo. The living room with kitchen (with electric hub, but no oven) had a sofa and 2 comfy chairs, large tv, dining table and a small balcony with 2 chairs. Location in the middle of the small town was excellent. We bought our fresh bread rolls each morning at the supermarket across the street. Would recommend.
