Hotel Luar is often celebrated for its excellent location, with guests frequently applauding its close proximity to beaches and offering stunning views. The hotel's traditional Portuguese charm contributes to a unique atmosphere, although there are mentions of it feeling slightly dated. Guests consistently commend the staff's friendliness and professionalism, adding to the welcoming vibe. While the hotel is generally regarded as clean and providing good value, some reviewers suggest that certain amenities, like the breakfast and pool, could use enhancements. Room updates are also recommended, despite their spaciousness and cleanliness.

The hotel has a slightly tired feel, but is very clean and everything works including the WiFi.. Just bathroom needed better ventilation and smelled funky. Position is excellent, close to beach and sea view side of hotel is quiet except for the sound of the sea. Staff helpful and street parking was plentiful and free outside the main doors. Rooms need double beds (twins don't do it) and a kettle would really make a big difference. Breakfast was adequate, but minimal and almost the same every day. I'd recommend for a cheap week in a beautiful place.

I chose this hotel as a late substitute for a trip to Spain as Portugal was a Green country as rated by the UK. The less said about that the better 🤬

I think the reviews are fair. It is a good 3 star hotel. No thrills but the rooms are clean with good balconies. I had a side sea view room (they don't have full sea views rooms) on the third floor (317). This room has sun from early afternoon until the sun sets behind a very nice neighbouring apartment block (currently empty). This is what I asked for and was very happy with it. It had great views. I also think it is at the nicer end of Praia de Rocha where the better restaurants are.

The free WiFi worked in the room and by the pool. Better than expected. The pool area is great. Lots of space and always sun loungers available. The pool was a tad fresh but still way warmer than the sea! The beach couldn't be closer. Down some cliff steps just outside the hotel rear garden exit. Note, all the beaches are down steps so not the best resort if you have mobility issues.

I had no need to use reception as I had no problems at all throughout my stay. The cleaners cleaned my room daily changing the towels every other day and the bed linen every third day.

Breakfast was fine and is the same every day. Cereals, bread/toast/rolls, marmalade, jam, honey, ham, cheese, scrambled egg, streaky bacon (lightly cooked, not crispy), apples, oranges, orange squash (not juice), tea and coffee. I bought fresh figs from a fruit seller very close to the hotel and Greek yogurt from the Spar to jazz up my breakfast! Please, please, please provide orange juice and not squash next time!

Top Tip - go on a 12 cafe boat trip......simply stunning!! Also bring a travel kettle if you like tea/coffee in your room. I do and I did! You have a fridge in your room for milk, beer, wine, etc, which you can drink on your balcony but not by the pool (as you must purchase food and drink from the pool cafe/bar).

Warnings - the fridge hums a bit and the Aircon hums to so if you are a light sleeper be warned/ bring earplugs. The rooms at the front of the hotel with no seaview are also on a busiest room so you'll get a bit of noise from that too.

Overall I'd recommend this hotel for a budget break and I would use it again 🤩

The location is excellent, just across from the beach and a few hundred meters from the main town with all the restaurants, pubs and night life. The Hotel is really great - we found it to be very clean, and really comfortable, very quiet at night even though our room was adjacent to the main lift - we were not disturbed once in the 4 nights we stayed there. The pool is very well kept, clean and deep (it is well over 2 meters at the deep end); plenty of sunbeds as many go across the walkway to the beach. The reception wait was long to check in but very helpful when we did and with the minor issues we had they were resolved immediately. The pool bar was in our opinion a bit expensive and food wasn't to our liking, but was open until late and opened early from 9am with the pool. The breakfast had little choice, but was very busy and although people complained about it, many sat down and seemed to eat plenty with many also making provisions for the day to take out with them; the quality of what was provided was to a high standard.
Would highly recommend this hotel and staying there, and we hope to return again for a short stay in 2024.

The hotel is excellently located just near to the beach. It is well priced and the rooms are a good size. However the interior of the rooms is quite tired, the television in the room is small by 2010 sizes and the breakfast is exceptionally limited. There is no fresh juice, no pastries and little in the way of hot food asides from scambled eggs and bacon. Simply adding a croissant option would have transformed the breakfast experience. The staff were pleasant and attentive. Parking is on road and free but can be difficult to find if checking in in the middle of the day

The hotel is ideally located - it is very close to the beach, shops and restaurants. The hotel itself has a small bar/restaurant which is perfect for lunch and snacks. Due to the close proximity of the beach we rarely used the pool but it was very clean and well maintained. Note that the depth of the pool drops to about 2.1M/7ft quite sharply. The hotel itself is very clean and has a lovely spacious reception area and a separate reading room which has a small library selection and really comfy seats. The hotel bedrooms are comfortable although a bit dated. All rooms are fitted with twin beds, i.e. no doubles/kind size beds. The room is fitted with a small fridge. There is also a safe in the room and you pay a small charge to use it (€1 per night rental fee plus €15 deposit).

We stayed at the Hotel Luar for six nights in early May. Although the hotel is located on a busy road, it is excellently situated for the beautiful beaches of Praia da Rocha, and is in a quiet area away from the busy resort centre. The design of the hotel is somewhat strange as there are very few rooms with direct sea views despite the proximity of the hotel to the coastline. Nonetheless, our room on the front of the hotel overlooking the road was spacious and simply finished, and had a balcony to catch the morning sun. The hotel is a bit dated but is well maintained and clean throughout. The breakfast, as others have commented, is not the best, but is adequate to set you up for the day. There is a nice pool area with sun loungers and a snack bar. The back gate takes you directly to the broad walk - turn left and walk a couple of minutes to find a good selection of restaurants and a few minutes further on, you are in the resort centre. Alternatively, take the steps down to the beach or turn right and walk for about 10 minutes to reach Vau. I would recommend the Hotel Luar to anyone seeking simple good value accommodation in a good location.

Neil, Thank you kindly for your review and rating. We love how the sun reaches each one of our front facing rooms either in the morning time or afternoon. While I understand your comments about the orientation of the balconies, the hotel was built in the late 1800's where it was common to have lots of sharing spaces for people to spend time together. We have a few ideas to restructure these spaces over the coming years that I am sure everyone will love. The location is certainly one of the best in the area and I am delighted you were able to maximise your time around the hotel. Hopefully we will see you again soon!

The hotel from the outside actually looks very good and the outdoor facilities are quite reasonable, the swimming pool is fantastic and the bar offers some snacks and snacks options although they are not of very good quality but it is enough to have fun. The worst of all is the cleanliness of the hotel inside, especially the rooms, which is horrible!! Worst hotel I've ever been to in terms of cleanliness. The rooms didn't smell clean, they just had to make the beds, the balconies weren't clean and the bathrooms sometimes didn't even clean the floors. I even had empty and open soap wrappers in the bathtub and they were able to clean the bathtub and not even throw the wrappers in the trash. We used a glass to act as an ashtray that went without being emptied all week and they never took it away or came to put an ashtray on the balcony. The glasses in the room, which are two, were never changed or washed by any of the employees who were cleaning there.
We stayed on the first floor and sometimes we went up the stairs and there was a can and a bottle of beer hanging from a lamp for a whole week and no one removed them!!!
I don't think the 3 stars are justified at all. The hotel urgently needs renovation, especially in the rooms and bathroom!!! I haven't seen bathrooms like that in hotels for over 10 years
I think it would be much more valued with a small interior renovation that goes a little sideways when you see the hotel from the outside...

Great location, we had been here in June 2022 and had no complaints, however this year Sept 2024 the cleanliness of the rooms not so good, we were here for 10nights and only had our bed linen changed once, towels were changed twice and for the last four days of our stay towels werent changed, bins got emptied but that was it, the floors werent swept inside or in the balcony. The fridge was very dusty and hadnt been wiped down the balcony door was dirty with what looked like grease wasnt like it was in 2022 when it was swept and moped every day and towels especially were replenished more often, love the location and the staff are ok, but i think it may be a change in hotel next year. Its very quiet around the pool, no music and no pool attendant which is a bit of a concern, the towel being put on beds early in the morning by guest is a pain as there isnt many sunbeds, we saw people put their towels on beds and they headed out of hotel and didnt come back for some time, its not the best trying to get around the pull, we only managed once in the 10 days to get 2 sunbeds. There is a place called Intermarche on the strip in behind the shops on the strip, you need to look above the shops for the sign, its a supermarket so cheap and a very nice shop so much cheaper than the Spars, its like a Tesco but cheaper, sells all the foods you need plus toiletries just as ive said its like Tesco. Sells alcohol aswel which again is cheaper than the other shops. Love the location of the Luar as its near the cliff walks. Cleanliness is key for any stay and this year we were disappointed

Thank you for your thorough and very detailed review – including your shopping recommendations! We're glad you found Intermarché a great spot for those vacation essentials, and we might just ask them for a commission with all this free advertising! 😉 Now, about the hotel side of things – we truly apologize for your experience with the cleanliness standards this time around. That's definitely not what we aim for. We’ll be sweeping through (pun intended!) our housekeeping routines to make sure everything is spotless on your next visit. As for the sunbeds, we feel your pain. It’s like trying to win a game of "sunbed bingo!" We'll work on improving the experience around the pool area so it’s fair and enjoyable for all. We hope to welcome you back next year, and promise it’ll be better—cleaner rooms, easier sunbeds, and maybe even a pool attendant doing a little dance to liven things up! 🕺

The hotel is in a lovely spot and the gardens and pool are well kept, the reception staff were lovely and very helpful. I know we stayed at the end of the season but things were a little tired both in the public areas and in our bathroom. Our room had a view of the sea and the pool and a good large balcony and the room itself was large with good storage. It was clean on arrival but the maid turning up 10 mins after we returned to the room every day at times ranging from 2:20 to 5:00 became a joke. The bathroom was an adventure the shower head fell off every time the shower was turned off so you quickly learned to duck or catch, the bath was very slippy and there were a lot of broken tiles. Breakfast was adequate at best, it would help if they turned the warmer on to keep the 'hot' food hot.

Thank you for your detailed feedback! We’re so glad to hear you enjoyed our beautiful location, gardens, and the helpfulness of our reception team — they always aim to bring a bit of sunshine to each guest's stay. 🌞 We appreciate your patience with the “adventurous” bathroom; we like to keep things exciting, but perhaps a bit too much this time! We’ll definitely look into the shower head situation and the breakfast warmers to make sure everything is as enjoyable as those stunning sea views you mentioned. We’re grateful for your feedback and hope to welcome you back for a smoother, even more comfortable stay in the future!

Stayed here twice now in October 2018 and 2019. It is what it says it is. Not a 5 star deluxe by any means but it is clean, quiet, relaxing and the staff are good. plus it is ideally located at the end of the strip close to several restaurants and ideal for strolling around Praia de Rocha. Could do with a little makeover as is getting a little old and is quite basic but it filled all our needs. Bruno deserves a mention as we find him to be quite precise with information and probably the most professional aspect of the Hotel.
