This is a very comfortable Pousada, within easy walking distance of all of the local points of interest. Although it is a historic building it has been cleverly converted to provide modern amenities. We enjoyed our short stay very much.

It was heartening to see the effort of everyone, without exception, to make our stay memorable!

We had an amazing short vacation at the “D. Joao IV – Pousada Convento de Vila Viçosa”. We were excited about lodging in a special hotel, a former Covent of the Chagas de Cristo, built in 1514.
We were warmly greeted at the reception. All the staff was friendly and polite. We are specially thankful to Inês.
The pousada and our suite did not disappoint. The frescoes along the corridors and the main halls were beautiful and every detail like the altars and the grilled windows made us imagining how was life in the convent.
Our rooms were spacious, nicely decorated and with a view to the cloister.
As for the meals, the breakfast buffet was very good and varied. We dined twice in the hotel’s restaurant and the traditional food in the menu was good. The wine list was extensive, with several wines from the region (Alentejo). The service was excellent. We thank the waiters and the Maître D’, Nuno Marques. We were surprised however by the limited choices in the menu.
Parking was easy and inside the premises.
The pousada is next to the Ducal Palace which is a must to visit.
Overall, we liked it and we appreciated the relaxing atmosphere.

We paid 209.70€ for 1 night, breakfast included and received a room where fridge was not on (when it was on, it has only worked on 30% and this with a heat outside of 35°), bathroom was in very bad condition, all the bedroom equipment was old. Our room was really the opposite of Luxury. The staff in reception was friendly. The breakfast was poor. We received a couple of things to eat on the table, no choice and quality was poor. On our trip we have been in 12 different hotels, in 11 we got a breakfast buffet with a good choice, in Vila Vicosa not. When we arrived the parking was full, the pool was also very busy. We suppose that people from outside was using the pool and the parking as when it was dark, the parking was a lot less busy.

When we checked in we were informed that the restaurant was closed but that the bar served light meals. On the 7th we tried to go to the bar to eat something at 10pm but it was closed and today what I can call a lack of respect for guests happened. We tried to have lunch at the bar and were told by the receptionist (no one came to the bar) that it shouldn't be possible to eat because they were serving lunch for the dukes!!! We had to go to Estremoz for lunch. I consider it a tremendous lack of respect for the customer. Unfortunately, we will still be here until Sunday.

After check-in, it was not allowed to rest as the noise from housekeeping in the corridors is absolutely UNACCEPTABLE. At night, the same situation happens but with children running and slamming doors close to midnight!! It is aggravated by cars spending the whole night under the window of room 105.
Restaurant closed, BAR with only the basics.
Facilities (cultural heritage) somewhat sloppy.
Breakfast - good but full of mosquitoes landing on the food....
At checkout, no one asked how the stay went and they frowned for refusing the donation pre-inserted into the account.
