Situated in the heart of Tuscany, Borgo Santo Pietro was once a healing stopover for medieval pilgrims. Today it continues to provide a sanctuary for modern souls, merging luxury hotel o erings and spa concept with a ‘farm-to-plate’ philosophy on a 300-acre estate. The estate encompasses a Michelin-starred restaurant, a holistic spa, organic skincare range Seed to Skin and an extensive organic farm. A sumptuous feeling of home pervades the 800-year- old luxury farmhouse hotel, with its worn leather armchairs pulled up around open fires, fresh flower arrangements picked straight from the garden and weathered brick wine cellar lined with boutique labels. Each of the boutique hotel’s 22 suites & rooms conveys its signature luxury experience of exquisite furnishings and chandeliers, antique art, bespoke beds, well- appointed bathrooms and a propinquity with nature. Whether the choice be a classic suite in the main 12th century villa, an exclusive suite with garden, or a seclusive villa with pool, the ethereal experience is designed for 5 star gratification and service.

I’ve stopped reviewing hotels for years now but I feel like I needed to write about the service at Borgo Santo Pietro, so that they can look into it. Borgo Santo Pietro is the kind of hotel I have always loved to stay. Rustic-luxe, working farm, antique furnishings, lots of greenery, comfortable room, great food, and a fabulous spa that melts your body mind and soul. I have stayed at numerous top tier hotels similar to this over the years, for example Heckfield Place in England, Soho Farmhouse etc We were warmly welcomed by the owners Claus and Janette as soon as we got off from the helicopter, and had a lovely Florentine marbled making workshop with them. There’s a helipad in BSP so it is very nice and efficient. The hotel, surrounded by farmland and filled with stunning gardens and ponds, completely blew us away by its charm and beauty. The two connecting suites we stayed were simply fab. Extremely comfortable beds and linens, lovely touches here and there, in room floral bath prepped after our spa treatments. And oh yes, the SPA! It’s definitely one of the best I’ve ever been to. The 3 hours facial and massage I had with skillful Sara was everything I needed and beyond. Trattoria sull’Albero, the more casual restaurant as opposed to the 1 star’s Saporium, is better and less stuffy in my opinion. The manager (sorry didn’t get his name) knows his stuff and is the most well trained staff among all staff members in the hotel. He’s warm, friendly and professional. Food was excellent at Trattoria sull’Albero. Speaking of service. Was very let down when the reception staff asked for tips right after him showing us the rooms. I usually tip big but got very disgusted (and honestly shocked) being asked so, especially at a hotel in such high calibre. The beginning of our stay was spoiled by him. And guess what, he asked for tips again the moment we checked out. I did eventually tip the bell boys, not as much as I usually would tho, and definitely did not tip this reception guy. Why? Because tips are meant for great service. Capiche? First night was frustrating - power went out many times and came back on many times. So in between 11pm to 4am the lights went on and off more or less than 15 times. Tried calling the reception but failed to connect due to power outage. Talked to the staff the next day, all she did was brushing it off. Fortunately it got stable the second night. Well so, BSP was bittersweet for us. It’s a shame when the experience was ruined by lack of training, or sometimes just by 1 or 2 staffs, at such magnificent establishment. Sad and disappointing indeed.

Response from Borgo Santo Pietro Pietro, Vendite at Borgo Santo Pietro

Thank you very much for having taken the time to review your experience at Borgo Santo Pietro and for having chosen us for your stay in Tuscany. Please know that your feedback has been taken on board as a part of our commitment to continuous improvement and that the issue has been addressed. We pride ourselves on extending an impeccable level of service to each of our guests and sincerely regret that on this occasion this was not the case. These are not the standards to which we hold ourselves, so please accept our deepest apologies for your experience. Regarding the electricity outage, this was due to the bad weather conditions in the area and the entire locality was affected. The following day our team visited the regional municipality to make a report and ensure that a solution could be found. We hope that on your next visit to Tuscany, we have the pleasure of welcoming you again so that you can experience first-hand the stellar experience for which we have become renowned. Should you have any further questions or concerns, please feel free to contact our team. Yours sincerely, Arianna Cirigliano, Director of Sales and Marketing.

It was absolutely beautiful. I can’t imagine not visiting the grounds while being anywhere near the property! It is an absolute must for anyone looking to spend a romantic Holiday in the beautiful scenic Tuscany. I adore the staff, the grounds and the bartender George’s exceptionally hand crafted drinks! He was an absolute blast! Eleonora was exquisite and prompt. She gave some of the best service I’ve ever seen. Cheers to a beautiful holiday.

Having stayed at some of the world's top hotels & resorts, Borgo Santo Pietro is an uncontested current favorite. My husband and I stayed at Borgo for 3 nights as part of a 17-day honeymoon, and it was the highlight of our trip. I'm always suspicious of the IG vs. Reality factor when traveling, but as stunning as Borgo looks online, it's even better in real life. Every inch of this property is impeccable and otherworldly. I had that 'pinch-me' feeling the entire time we spent there. The attention to detail here is immaculate, and there is so much to discover. One very unique factor is how the many secret gardens make it feel completely private and all yours. We were at Borgo for 3 nights without leaving the property once and I wished we could stay a week, if not forever. The housekeeping was incredible, as were the activities and the Spa. Shout out to Tommy for a fantastic property tour, and to the Spa staff for the best treatments of our lives. I've seen older reviews reference clunky service, but from my experience, it seems this has been mostly worked out. There were a few times we needed to find the staff to order drinks or food at the pool, but overall, the service was wonderful, and it truly didn't matter in the grand scheme of the experience. If you need me, I'll be busy dreaming about Borgo until I have the chance to return.

The property is stunning, however they don’t really care about their guests. My entire experience was spoiled because I was attacked and bitten by one of their dogs on the property the first night my husband and I checked in. We were told by staff to explore the grounds and that nothing was off limits. No warnings were given of any potential dangers or hidden hazards. So as soon as we checked in, off we went to see the farm. It was raining that evening, so we both had umbrellas provided by the hotel. As we were walking around the farm, we saw the signs for sheep and decided to go see the animals. I was walking a little in front of my husband and as I turned the corner where the sheep was supposed to be, I saw a dog sleeping on its side. I’m a dog lover, so I turned and told my husband there was a cute dog here as well. As soon as I said that, I heard the dog running towards me and next thing I know, it attacks me and bites my left calf. I’m left in a frozen state because never have I ever been attacked and bitten by a dog and I was in a shock and excruciating pain and didn’t know what to do. The dog proceeded to aggressively bark and show teeth and kept trying to go after me. My husband tried to save me from further injuries by opening an umbrella and shielding me from the dog. We started to quickly walk away from the site back towards the hotel and I was so scared to examine my inquiry as it felt like the dog took a chunk out of my leg. We made it back to the hotel and I promptly asked to speak to a manager to report what happened. However, we felt like this whole incident was downplayed and weren’t taken with the concern I expected. I was offered a glass of prosecco to “calm my nerves” and was sent to the room to relax with an ice pack, as fortunately the dog didn’t draw blood. My whole calf was left swollen, tender and was purple black for several weeks, nevermind the emotional distress it caused me. This was not an experience I expected when we decided to stay at Borgo Santo Pietro. Hotels of this caliber should take extra steps to provide guests with a safe environment and protect them from any foreseeable risks. I kept asking a couple managers on duty why the dog was not locked up after hours and why there were no signs indicating there was a big guard dog on premises such as “Beware of dog”, “Please don’t enter beyond this point”, etc. Had I known that, I would not have gone over there, but I couldn’t get a straight answer to those questions. I’m thankful that my husband was with me and we had umbrellas to ward the animal off. I can’t even imagine how dire the situation could have been, if I were by myself with no means to defend myself, or if it was an older, frail guest. I understand that it is a working dog and it’s there to do its job protecting the sheep, but appropriate measures should and have to be taken to ensure that the animal is not causing harm to unsuspecting guests. It certainly left me with an acute emotional trauma, as well as a couple persistent bite marks. I wish the hotel would have taken this accident more seriously as I felt that it was dismissed and downplayed. I emailed the hotel about this incident, and heard nothing. Stay at your own risk!

Dear Mrs. Mille, First of all we would like to thank you for taking time to write about your experience at Borgo Santo Pietro, and would like to sincerely apologize for the inconvenience incurred during your stay. We are sorry to learn you did not feel taken care of, as we provided immediate assistance to you and also suggested taking you to the ER to make sure you were fine, and your decision was to stay in your accommodation. Please be assured that we have taken all the necessary precautions in the meantime, and the dog is now in a fence hence can't harm anyone. Once again, we truly regret what happened and we hope we will have the pleasure of welcoming you back to our beautiful Borgo in the near future. Arianna Cirigliano Director of Sales & Marketing

My husband and I stayed on property for 4 days this June. We were in Italy for two weeks and stayed at 3 different “hotels” that are apart of leading hotels of the world. While we throughly enjoyed our stay at the other 2, our stay at Borgo Santo Pietro was unmatched. Their service and food were truly top notch. Their spa was heavenly, and the daily activity options and things to do on property made everyday a new adventure. The thoughtfulness and emphasis on farm fresh food was refreshing and delicious. Their skin care line is to die for. House keeping amazing! We stayed in the smallest room, but no complaints. The bed was the MOST comfortable we slept in all trip. There were a lot of fly’s on property, BUT you are in the country and they do not use pesticides. I am not sure if there is a natural solution they can use, but hopefully they are experimenting! Regardless, 10/10 stay and we will be back!

One of the best hotels in Europe. It combines the Tuscan beauty with implacable Asian-like service and attention to details. A large Tuscan estate with vineyards, farms and two restaurants. But the feeling is like at a top Maldives or Thai hotel, with amazing attention to details, committed service and amazing standards. We planned on touring the area, and ended up barely ever leaving the estate… Perfection.

An exceptional level of place. Bringing together the best of Tuscany with Six Senses-like design, service and attention to details. We planned on traveling around, but the place was so amazing we just stayed in most days (but not all). It’s a large estate, with vineyards, lakes, gardens… two wonderful restaurants, one of which Michelin *, service is wonderful and so is the atmosphere. Recommended for long stays. Only drawback that it is a bit far from Tuscany's point of interest.

This was our third visit to BSP and probably our last. Though the first two times we were impressed by their warm hospitality this time things were very different. For a newcomer it would still feel like an amazing place to be but we could compare with the previous years and we definitely didn’t like the change in staff, they seemed to be less trained, the food was worse, no service by the pool we had to go to the restaurant constantly for drinks or food. Even the change of chef at the michelin star restaurant was for the worse in our opinion. All in all still a good place but for this price range we will be heading elsewhere next year.

This was our fourth stay at BSP over the years and once again our stay was absolutely perfect. The beauty of the surroundings never fails to amaze and the breakfast here remains the best I have ever had in any five star hotel. The latest garden villas are beautifully furnished (we stayed at two - Casa Ellen and Maggiorana) and stylistically a joy to behold. I’ve started using their some of their skincare products regularly after our stay last year and can highly recommend the line. In terms of activities, we’ve had the good fortune to try out most of what they offer over the years. My favorite was probably the pasta making class. The pizza making class is also fun and guests should definitely do a property tour to fully appreciate the surroundings. We’ve also gone on a cheese making demonstration, enjoyed a picnic, and gotten massages at the spa. They organized a wonderful truffle hunt followed by lunch and wine tasting for us this year. A good portion of the food that you’re served is sourced locally or from their own property so the quality of the produce is very high. They make their own olive oil and balsamic vinegar now which are both delicious. They expect to start bottling their own wine from next year. Looking forward to our next visit!

I’m tempted to gatekeep this hotel, however it is indeed very deserving of its high praise and rating. I did meticulous research in looking into our honeymoon comparing to other top rated hotels in the region, and the Borgo met and exceeded expectations. The property is the definition of tranquil luxury and is without question my favorite hotel to date (and may always be.) Reflecting on our stay, we are still asking ourselves, “did that really exist?” From the moment you step out of your car, you’ll be greeted with excellent service, incredible farm fresh food, beautiful florals and interiors, and lovely activities. 20 suites is a perfect hotel size and provides the right opportunity to either socialize if you like, or remain completely secluded. The clientele was generally very amiable and respectful. We loved the pool - quite tranquil and never any competition or hurry to get seats. There are many beautiful gardens and activities to explore and we particularly enjoyed our painting class with John Robert Peck, who was incredibly knowledgeable and kind to us beginners. The breakfast spread is to die for and the best I’ve ever had. Our rooms were sumptuous and well supplied and checked at least twice daily. Do not miss the farmers market dinner, dining at the Saporium with live music, and a trip to the nearby San Galgano abbey. We can’t wait to return.
