While painters are born, travellers are made and no land has aroused the curiosity, the enthusiasm and the culture of entire generations more than Tuscany. Certainly, not all of them have had the luck to begin their journey in the enchantment of Castel Monastero. In fact a few kilometres from our village, along roads of pure delight, can be found masterpieces of art and of the highest culinary tradition.Every day, a discovery. Every day a different itinerary passing through unspoiled scenery. Every day, on your return, a massage and a candle-lit dinner. And together, over a romantic meal for two or with your friends, you will recall the frescoes of Piero della Francesca and the perfect walls of Monteriggioni, the Renaissance utopia of Pienza and the gastronomic glory of Castellina in Chianti. And again, to surprise you, there’ll be a sunset over Pitigliano and a stroll around the Etruscan necropolises of Sovana.

I am in hotels over 250 mights a year and am privileged to stay in some of the world's very best hotels.

This hotel nestled in the beautiful and scenic hills of Tuscany strikes a perfect balance of quietly letting guests enjoy their privacy while ensuring that every need is quietly catered for. To me the mark of an excellent hotel is a hotel that learns a guests individual needs and likes and then just takes care of them for the guest, this property excels in this way.

I stayed here 4 nights and came with my bike ("bici") in the back of my car. Siena is a short distance bike able by anyone, for the mire intrepid biker Arezzo is easy ro reach from the property. I returned form my trip to Arezzo in time for what was frankly the best massage I have had anywhere in the world (though one of their massage therapists does seem better than the rest it would be very hard to find a duplicate for her anywhere on the planet, Asia included).

Sunday night saw amazing live opera in the hotel's idillic medieval courtyard. While they were sold our for dinner that night the hotel made special accommodations to give me dinner on a "long table" and a front row seat. In New York people would have paid USD 500 easily for a ticket to such an event.

The restaurant manager is the absolute best. In thousands of hotel stays at some of the most expensive hotels in the world I have never seen a restaurant manager pay so much attention to guests. Amazing, I just hope he stays in good cardiac health running around after all of his guests so much. That said, while the dinners were very good it's the one area where there could be some improvement, the menu didn't change and the food quality while very very grid did't match the otherwise world-leading experience the hotel offers.

The pools are really wonderful for relaxation and enjoying a wonderful Tuscan afternoon while waited on by a fully attentive and well stocked poolside bar staff. That said, I like to swim a number of laps each day and the pools are not really large enough for that. The gym also has older treadmills that could do with an update and the equipment is very limited but the gym is not why guests come to the hotel and I did'nt see anyone using the facilities.

As a result of my stay, the law firm I own will be hosting a retreat here for our senior staff and we will add this hotel as a "priority" for locations we take special private clients to when we need seclusion to review their affairs over a weekend.

Overall this is a new favorite for me and is perfect for couples and families.

We stayed so we could visit the Palio which was arranged by the hotel. The hotel and grounds are so attractive and room excellent. We stayed in the old part. The Palio was cancelled at short notice due to rain, but the hotel gave us a free room and arranged for us to view from the same window over looking the race track the next day. Staff could not do enough. A couple of strange things, when you have paid so much for a room they charge 10 euros for a fried egg. Breakfast is good but never had to pay for a fried egg. They also have an excellent spa with salt pool and indoor pool with jets etc. But some days they wanted to charge 40 euros to use. This ment we only ever saw 2 other people in it the whole of our stay. A small bottle of beer was 16 euros. Its not all so much the cost but the hassle of not knowing whats included and what you have to sign for. I mention this as it might irratate some people. But we had an excellent stay and cant thank them enough.

This was an extremely nice hotel that had a breathtaking historical campus, Delicious Michelin star restaurants, And I had an amazing time there! There are only two drawbacks:

1. The cleaning. It was ok Just not up to par with other hotels I’ve been in and I found a broken bowl full of dirt under my bed.

2. The Wi-Fi. It had probably one of the worst Wi-Fis ever and I had to use lots of my precious roaming data.

That is why I’m only giving it four stars. But other than that it was a great and wonderful experience we made lots of memories and I definitely recommend.

We hadn’t visited Tuscany before and found it difficult to find a hotel outside of Florence that we thought would really deliver what we were looking for, we thought from the website Castel Monastero was it, but were overall disappointed. The remote location was tranquil and much of the surrounding area stunningly beautiful. The hotel was smaller than it appears on the website, particularly the courtyard area, we booked a prestige room expecting something a bit special, what we got was a room poorly laid out and lacking any real charm.
Staff were polite and courteous but overall not making your stay special, the room was often cleaned late in the day and there was always a feeling that they knew you had to travel to get anything yourself so anything you requested was at a price, the Spa at €40 Euros a day per person was a complete rip off. The room had no outside space and due to being an old Monastery was dark inside, not much can be done about this, but an outside space could have easily been created.
We ate twice in the restaurant, normally there are two, but COVID reduced this to one, we understand the reasons, but no one told this before we turned up! The restaurant that served us was poor, the food was bland but at prices you would expect far better. When we ate out the standard was far higher and much better value.
It is difficult to know how much of the failings we experienced were down to COVID and how much was just how it was, probably somewhere in the middle. However this is not a 5 star hotel, it has 5 star prices but the overall experience is well below this. After our stay we travelled to Lake Garda and stayed at Hotel Fasano (also reviewed) where our faith was restored, this is a gem and they understand the importance of the customer, Castel Monastero did not.

We booked a deluxe room for three nights. When we arrived there was no one around and we had too look for the reception which was very underwhelming. We were shown to a dark gloomy room with a step up to the bathroom which we found really dangerous during the night. In addition the bed was right next the french window and the guests sunbathing down below could see into our bed.! We asked for next category up, they showed us a suite, but it was gloomy and 200 euros more per night so we stayed in this miserable small room.

There were no tea or coffee making facilities in the room and the tiniest bottles of water left at night, with no welcome amenity on arrival apart from a glass of prosecco at the bar. We don't like prosecco and asked could we swap for wine. There was nearly world war 3! The young waiter took the wine order but the young bar manager told us we could not do it as the wine cost more! The is when we are paying 490 euros per night!! We asked for actual manager, and he relented and gave us a small quantity of wine each.

The pool was average, guests very close together. The senior waiter came round at 12.30 an threw the lunch menus on the tables around the pool saying 'this is the menu'! Really rude. We had eaten lunch on the first day and we had caeser salads which were very dry and tasteless.

No bottled water offered to guests at the pool, nor anyone offering any pleasantries such as fruit or even putting towels out for us.

Dinner at restaurant was very nice .

Breakfast was average. Breakfast was included in the room rate, however they wanted an extra 10 euros for eggs! Outrageous at those room rates.

This place is also in the middle of nowhere so difficult to find anywhere to eat outside.

There are many many beautiful places to stay at half this price who offer wonderful small touches at no charge.

How this place is rated as 5 star is beyond us. We have travelled to hundreds of places to stay including old castles such as this, at lesser rates but offering much more.

We booked this hotel through Amex Platinum, assuming it would be top notch service since it is listed as part of the Leading Hotels of the World collection. The moment we arrived at the hotel, the front desk staff were nothing short of rude and dismissive to our questions about the facilities, hotel history, and capacity. At one point, the front desk woman sneered at our questions because she claimed we had booked our reservation through Expedia. When we showed her that we had booked through Amex platinum, her entire demeanor changed. She upgraded our room which was the right thing to do given how poorly she had treated us upon arrival.

The problem was that the hotel continued to treat us like we had booked through Expedia. Anything we asked for was denied bc they claimed we booked through Expedia. I’m not sure what else to say, but regardless of if you book through Expedia or Amex Platinum, all guests should be treated with a level of respect. The “junior” staff by the pool and the restaurant were amazing, but the “senior” staff at the front desk and concierge made this a truly miserable experience. I do not plan to return as it is not enjoyable to have to argue every time we have a request.

Other items to note with the hotel: the electric locks to enter the rooms are impossible to use (other reviewers have noted the same problem), the spa facilities are an additional 40 euro if you want use them, the hotel is used by a lot of businesses for conferences so they rarely have the ability to upgrade or provide a late check out. There are two restaurants but due to COVID - only one is open which they don’t tell you until you arrive. Food at the restaurant was very ok.

Bottom Line - this is not a 5 star experience. Pay extra and stay at Borgo San Felice which is 20 min down the road. I have stayed at Borgo San Felice 3x and should have stayed there instead of trying this place.

My husband and I spent our honeymoon at this resort and couldn’t have been more disappointed with how things went.

Let’s start with the most disgusting thing we saw. While eating breakfast one morning, I saw a huge black rat scurry across the floor while we were eating. I don’t know what kind of health standards Italy has, but in the US this Michelin star restaurant would be shut down immediately for health code violations. We were so disgusted by this, we never ate at the resort from that point forward.

Our room was dark and dungeon esque. We upgrade to a suite, which you think would have the nicest amenities. Our “king” bed was two twin beds pushed together with a noticeable dip in the middle, making sleep next to each other impossible. The beds were also hard as a rock, and neither my husband and I slept well at all. It felt like we were sleeping in coffins for the entire trip.

The icing on the cake was the service of the front desk. They were beyond rude and snarky to us. We were locked out of our room one day because we couldn’t figure out the insanely complex key system they have in place (read the other reviews, it makes zero sense). We asked the front desk to help us and the girl rolled her eyes at us as if we were greatly inconveniencing her. She then rudely shows us how to open the door, and made us felt like peons and fools for not knowing how to operate the door. Not what I expected from a 5 star resort.

All in all, we were saddened that we didn’t have the honeymoon we had hoped and dreamed of having. We wouldn’t ever come back and certainly wouldn’t recommend it to other couples thinking about staying here on their honeymoon or romantic getaway.

Potentially amazing but very poorly managed! I stayed (I’m still here as I’m writing) for 3 days on a road trip in Italy with the family. The service before coming gave me very high expectations with pre-check-in and a nice brochure of activities to do while we are here.

Unfortunately that’s not what happened, here are some of my experiences:

1. We booked 2 prestige rooms but nowhere it states that some rooms are inside the 13th century building and others are in an extension outside the main gate, the beautiful view from the pics you see in the photo gallery are obviously different. So make sure to ask when you book.

2. The day we arrived we went straight to the pools which are great for family with beautiful environment but we first ordered sparkling water and were given plastic bottles without glasses or ice. I ordered a burger which arrived without any topping like salad or sauce , we then realized that the burger was probably for another table. I didn’t care, just thought that waiter couldn’t speak English or was inexperienced but no problem we are on holidays after all. Bear in mind that the burger was something like 25 euro.

3. Breakfast- that was one of the most comical scene, the waiters looked confused, we asked for coffee multiple times after 20 min we get served a full coffee cup of espresso instead of coffee, after trying the fake orange juice from the “fresh orange juice” I asked are real fresh juice which arrived at the end where people asked us twice if we had finished, making us wanting to leave so they could clear the table. There is very little selection of fruits, very average selection of breads and the most crazy thing in a luxury hotel, if you don’t want the commercial scramble eggs you have to pay to get an omelette!!! The service was so poor I decided to cancel our dinner at the hotel not wanting to relive that same experience.

4. The jacuzzi area is closing at 7pm, so today we swam till 6:30pm but when we tried to reach the jacuzzi I was told by a lady that she closed it because she had no one to look after it. You can come back tomorrow. What kind of answer is that?

5. The mini bar & laundry service prices are just ridiculous, I ll upload it here later but from memory it’s like 12 euro to was one underwear.

I went to complain to front office following another lady who was doing the same. The table next to us at breakfast were laughing about it as it was so bizarre.

The facilities are amazing but at this level of pricing you expect a very different level of service.

Dear Antoine, Good afternoon from Castel Monastero and thank you for sharing your experience in our Resort. First and foremost, please rest assured we highly evaluate every feedback we receive from our guests regardless of their “positive” or “negative” outcome as we believe they are a great incentive to help us improving our service. As a matter of fact, after reading your review we decided to take enough time to further investigate what happened and to be able to give you the most exhaustive answer. We are happy to read you appreciated our facilities, but on the other had we are sorry to learn your stay didn’t meet your expectation and we are even more sorry to learn you wrote your comments while you were still on property instead of sharing your thoughts with our team. We absolutely understand every client has his/her own experience and that not all experiences can be 100% satisfactory, however we always try our best effort to make our guests happy and we regret when we are not able to make this happen as we put all our passion towards our job. As you experienced first-hand, Castel Monastero is a 13th century complex that features 72 rooms divided into 11 buildings spread out on a 6-hectares wide property; some buildings are located around our medieval piazza, while others are located in areas that complete our Retreat (i.e. the spa/swimming pool) and the room assignment is purely casual as pictures you will find online are indicative of the style we have (if clients inform us about their preference, we always do our best to accommodate their request). We also can count on a wonderful and unique 1000sqm Spa that features an indoor sea oil pool, an indoor pool with jacuzzi, steam bath, 2 saunas, emotional showers, kneipp therapy and relaxing area and that our guests are always excited about. As you have been informed, the use of our wellness facilities is allowed starting from 16 years old and there is a supplement of € 40,00 to be considered; you showed up with your young children and were simply informed by our Spa Supervisor about our policies and that kids couldn’t access exclusively for safety reasons. As anticipated at the very beginning of this post, feedbacks are always welcome, however allow us to underline how more effective they would be if only they are made during a face-to-face conversation as this would give us the chance of finding suitable solutions to turn a client’s stay into a better experience. Again, every client has a subjective point of view that he/she is free to share and every one should be spokesperson for his own personal experience without involving apparent negative comments of third parties. Should you wish to further discuss details of your stay, feel free to reach me at frontoffice.manager@castelmonastero.com and I will be glad to assist you. Best, Luca Giuili Rooms Division Manager

Our expectations were high on arrival as it is a lovely location. Firstly can I say that the staff were very friendly but the Hotel is under staffed and under resourced and very badly managed. The profit for the owners is more important than the guests.
We booked the hotel as it had two great looking restaurants, The day before we were due to arrive the hotel confirmed via email that one restaurant was closed. Not a problem we think as there is an outdoor courtyard. When we checked in we tried to book a table and were told that unless we paid 300 euro for their gala event we couldn't eat at the restaurant. The alternative was a snack menu or there was a pizza restaurant we could drive to. Not what you would expect from a luxury hotel. Following day we had a good time by the pool but wasps were a constant problem with a number of guests being stung and no attempt by the hotel to deal with the issue. Ordered lunch which took an hour to arrive for a salad. We complained then and on departure which was met with a shrug of the shoulders. I challenge the management to justify why the service was so poor. I accept that staffing is a problem but then a good hotel would make an allowance. Please steer clear of this hotel unless you have an assurance that their quality has changed. Also budget for very, very expensive drinks as per other guests comments.

Beautiful hotel but they have overpriced their food and drink menus. €25 for a Gin and Tonic is ridiculous given what you are already spending for the hotel rooms.

Their restaurant and dining menus are very limited. €30 for a basic burger and fries!?!!
No salads at all on the lunch menu and when we did order a green salad for dinner it was literally a plate of romaine lettuce. Just lettuce!!!

Beware that the drink service at the pool bar is very slow. It’s not the staff it’s the set up. When you order wine they have to walk across the property to go to the restaurant to get the wine and then come back. It makes no sense.

The hotel bar service before dinner was dreadfully slow and poorly trained.

It’s a shame as the staff are all so friendly and nice but the management and set up needs some tweaks to make your stay better.

There is no coffee or tea in your room so getting a coffee when you wake up is a bit of an ordeal.

They need to review their service in order to call themselves a leading hotel of the world and review their prices so you don’t feel like you’re being hosed at every turn.

Thank you for your kind words about the Hotel and friendliness of our staff. Espresso coffee Machines are available for all rooms of Prestige category and above. Other rooms have electric kettle and complementary tea/instant coffee available so I am very sorry that was not the case during your stay and we intend to address the issue with our staff. Our best wines are kept in our medieval Cantina for ideal temperature and storage conditions. We have some available at the pool bar of course but will take your feedback in careful consideration and hope to make your stay impeccable during your next visit.
