We initially booked Banshokaku through a hotel reservation site, which allows us to make cancellations up till 3 days prior to the actual stay. We have always booked hotels through these sites, and none of the hotels in Japan gave us this queer treatment, except for this unique hotel of Kaga Onsen. Shortly after placing a reservation, we received an email from this hotel warning us that we will have to pay upfront via credit card first (we usually choose to pay cash at the concierge), or they will nullify our reservation. The primary reason being we are foreigners - and that foreigners tend to not show up on the day itself, causing a lot of inconvenience to the hotel. I find this reason difficult to accept as no-show happens regardless of nationality. In addition to that, the reservation site charges us 100% of the hotel stay for no-show, and at least 30% if we decide to cancel abruptly a few days before the stay. Why do foreigners receive a different treatment (i.e the emails) which overrides all terms and conditions promised on the reservation site? We received two more email warnings after that, and after the distasteful experience with their rude emails (Both Japanese and English emails were very hostile), we decided to cancel our stay and put up at other foreigner-welcoming hotels of Kaga Onsen.

The hotel is a bit off from the main street and if you do not have a car, you need to walk up the hill for around 8-10 mins to reach the hotel. One sacrifices the convenience for a quiet and nice environment. The outdoor onsen is really good because if is on a hill slope, there is no view to build high walls to block the view. Instead, when you soak in the hot bath, you have a view of trees. Food is average and nothing special. I always enjoy having dinner in my own room instead of going the the restaurant and the service is good. Nothing impressive but no complaint!
