The two of us went to Gente de mar three days ago for the day. Pros: two lovely quiet beaches on a small island. The water is turquoise and atmosphere relaxing. The food was great. Cons: where do I begin. We only read the first few reviews here before going ahead with the reservation and I really regret that. The booking process was annoying in every sense. Because we’re from North America and don’t have an international data plan, I called the resort’s WhatsApp number several times, no on answered, so I messaged the same number. No answer. Messaged again later. It took hours for the first response. The person was insanely slow at responding to any of my questions about the day trip. They made me fill out an online form requesting full payment in order to reserve our spots which was only in Spanish so I wasn’t confident I filled it out correctly (and they weren’t answering). Once done, the WhatsApp person didn’t bother sending me a confirmation and I was left wondering whether it even went through. Which brings me to my next point, lack of communication. They said to meet at the marina for 8:30am but never mentioned how busy it gets at the gates where you’re required to pay a fee to get in. It was absolute chaos there, the line was out of control and there was one man selling tickets with a stack of cash in his hands so of course once we finally came up to pay, he had to go find the right change to give back which took time (while he let other people ahead of us and flirted with the women behind us) so were stressing hard thinking we’d miss the boat. We made it in, in the end and the boat didn’t actually leave until just before 10 so we got on the island at 11 leaving just a few hours to enjoy the beach. It also wasn’t communicated that the boat ride back would be absolute hell. They mentioned that we would need to leave earlier (by 2:45) because the waves get higher later, but they failed to mention that we would be getting drenched head to toe. The two of us initially sat all the way at the front of the boat, and the resort’s massage therapist approached us and said we should move to the back because the front would feel bumpiest. Thinking she knew best, we listened and went to the only available seats which were all the way at the back. Pretty much as soon as the ride started, we were flying over MASSIVE waves and hitting them so hard that the water was splashing us. About 2/3 of the boat was getting slapped by the water but us 4 at the very back row had it the worst. I could barely even hold onto the seat in front of me as I swallowed water over and over and it was hitting my face leaving me unable to see. Our things were soaked as well, purses with phones, wallets etc which got damaged. Everyone around us was screaming intensely and most were soaked except the few people (who were ALL RESORT STAFF) all the way at the front where we originally sat. I’m a thrill seeking kind of person but I never thought my life was actually in danger- until this moment. And the fact that one of THEIR worker told us specifically to move out of our initial seats, where we would have been completely unscathed, to the ones at the back where it was the absolute worst, is all the more concerning. It was terrifying, intense and “the most fu***d up thing ever” according to the woman beside me who was screaming the entire time. Oh and this torture lasted a full hour. Which bring me to my final point. Don’t bother, it’s not worth it. By the time you get to the beach you really only enjoy it for maybe 3 full hours at most. They ring the bells when it’s lunch time and time to leave (which makes you feel like they’re herding cattle) so everything just feels rushed. It feels as though as soon as you settle your bill with them at the end of the day, they stop caring about providing you any service or even safety. For that same amount and possibly even less, save yourself the hassle and trauma and go to Blue Apple beach club which is much closer, offers incredible service and everything is organized seamlessly (we were there yesterday). Don’t go through the unnecessary stress and torture.

Cordialmente ,

This day trip went well. It was a little difficult to initially book the trip, as you had to go through a hefty online process, however it was all well worth it as the island and beaches were beautiful. I only have 2 real complaints about the entire experience. First, the morning meeting point was very disorganized. We were suppose to be there for 8:30, and you had to pay a fee to get inside the dock area where the boat leaves. The lineups were long, the man that you buy your entrance fee from was rude, and we thought we were going to miss our boat. However, we didn’t miss it, and the boat didn’t leave until 10, which only left us with a few hours to really enjoy the island experience, as the boat ride there and back is an hour long. Second, the workers kept telling us how we had to leave to come back at 2:45, because it gets dangerous. As we got on the boat, we sat at the very front, and one of the workers told us that it gets very wavy and it’s not best to sit at the front. The only space left for us was at the very back row. As the boat started going, more than half of the boat continuously got completely drenched from the waves, and we got hit the most at the very back row. There was even a couple with a baby who got wet. All of our belongings were soaked. They didn’t warn us at all about this, and all of the workers on the boat were sitting at the front, without a single drop on them. People were screaming, and we had to endure water splashing on us for an hour. We were freezing and it was overall an extremely dangerous experience. We are still in shock that a worker would tell us to sit elsewhere, while they knew this would happen. It’s really unfortunate that they didn’t tell us about this, because the trip was so nice and relaxing, and this just left a really bad after thought on the entire day.

Visited Gente De Mar for a day trip (9am to 3pm)with 5 other family members. Beautiful and quiet which might have been because it was out of season. Booked through hotel reception which was hassle free. Snorkelling was an extra 50 thousand peso but well worth it, instructor was great (but no English) and the fish and coral was beautiful. Lunch was a bit slap up but tasty enough and big portions. 10/10 would reccomend.

We did a lot of research before heading to the Rosario Islands. The first lesson we followed from the blogs and research we read was to *not* buy tickets or passes in advance but rather arrive at the ports early morning around 8:00 am and negotiate with resort office counters on the spot for the best price. Best decision! Spent half the price on entry rather than what we would have paid online. We got a really good deal on Gente de Mar that included return boat trip with speed boats, welcome drinks, lunch, access to private beaches and towels. Overall a deal totally worth it. Gente de Mar is a great way to spend your day a little outside of Cartagena. however I was glad we didn’t choose to spend the night here as its literally quite dead after the day tourists leave and there is so much more happening in Cartagena that you won’t want to miss. Overall, recommended for a day visit to enjoy the sun and beaches. For vegetarians, they offered us a veg spaghetti while everyone was enjoying their fried fish which looked pretty good. The veg food was just ok and the pet dog and parakeets were initially cute but then became a real nuisance when we were eating as they would literally come and dot on our table which I found quite annoying. The resort also offers snorkeling, SUP, kayak etc at an additional price which is negotiable.

The only concerns are the short time spent on the beach and the numerous seaweed in the water that made some spots less crystal clear. Nevertheless the place is a small paradise, well organized and to enjoy sea, rest, food, drinks and music and even plunge into a hammock. It would deserve a longer stay!
