I was spending 5 nights at Sultan Palace last month, alone, whilst travelling with some friends in Tanzania. I had decided last minute to join them in Zanzibar at the end of my trip, however their hotel was fully booked. I researched hotels close to theirs and came across sultan. It looked amazing. Everyone was very nice and the room and food was always lovely. However on the 3rd night I was walking back to the hotel room from the restaurant in the main building and a man came out of the bush with a mask and knife in his hand demanding money and my phone. He pushed me into my hotel room and told me I was to find all the money I had. He proceeded to threaten me with the knife whilst searching through my room. After what felt like a very long time, he left with all my cash and my phone. I quickly bolted the door and rang reception. No one answered for around 10 minutes. When someone did answer, they were not shocked or in any hurry. I continued to wait for the manager, petrified and alone, to come to my room, but she had no sense of urgency. When the manager came (Paula) she was telling me to calm down and tried accusing me of bringing it upon myself because I was a young girl (21) staying alone. Excuse me? Where was your hotel security? Why was someone able to come onto the hotel premises and rob a young girl under your watch? We went through many procedures with the police that same evening. During this time I was asking people if I could use their phones to ring my friend, which they were all very reluctant to. No one was offering to help, they were all carrying on like it was a normal occurrence? Even Paula went back and continued eating her dinner in the restaurant!! They were all so rude and I cannot complain enough. I feared for my life and no one even cared? Eventually I got hold of my friend and arranged to stay with her for the rest of my time in Zanzibar. The manager of my friends hotel (The Sands Beach Resort) helped me massively and was the complete opposite of Paula. IF YOU ARE GOING TO DONGWE, STAY AT THE SANDS BEACH RESORT!! Hopefully the police will manage to investigate more into the hotel security and Paula!! What if I was stabbed? And no one answered the phone for 10 minutes? Then what? I am only just writing this review as it has taken me a while to come to terms with what happened and sort things back home. However I will never be staying here again, especially after how Paula treated me. I was meant to be her customer, how dare she make out I am the criminal!!…
Ewcellent stay in Sultan Palace. The service of restaurant was perfect. Paola is great manager. Recommandation: The wifi could be improve in the restaurant area. You can put close shoes inside the room to go on the Beach ( sea urchins)
Bring on adventures in Kenya and on mainland Tanzania, we needed a place to relaxing and enjoying sun and snorkling. This was the right place and can be recommended from the heart. It is like coming home to home and mum’s affection. Accommodations superb, meny’s changing every day, allways service and a smile. Wi-fi could be better, but maybe it is the situation on the island that males it weak, snorkling was allright but marked by ebb and flod. Conclution; it is hard to find better place to relax and enjoy manorial conditions.
The hotel is in a great location overlooking the ocean and the pier. It is spacious, exquisitely decorated and the food is amazing. Each room has a flower or tree name and its own path to the beach. Breakfast and lunch is served near the beach, dinner upstairs. The Infinity pool is big enough and in a quite space. Paola is so nice, and accomodating. She's been one of the first ones to arrive in Zanzibar 20 years ago and knows it all. She really takes good care of her clients and is a delight to be around! Paola, thank you so much for the time spent together, see you soon! Jessica (i came with Michele Papa and Father Stephen)
Legendary Zanzibar can still transport you back in time. You visit the rooms of the palace , where once the Sultans of Zanzibar once lived. The rooms where once the intrepid explorers such as Livingstone, Burton and Stanley were guests. Today, it's very run down, but still retains a magic of its own. The rooms overlooking the sea. Some original furniture, still there. The garden where some of the sultans are buried.. Afterwards you can walk the winding streets of stone town, and marvel at the old buildings and spice shops. Or sit at the bar of a luxury hotel with a drink in your hand and watch the dhows sail by, as the sun sets over Africa.
Rarely could you meet such a professional yet friendly manager as Paola. She was the purest jewel in this treasure chest! Wonderful, enormous rooms, very clean, extremely pleasant personnel, beautiful location... wonderful for couples, this hotel was a paradise for me and my daughter, too!
We were welcomed by the manager, Paola and showed to our room/hut. The quality of the room was very good with view of the blue ocean and the beach. The beach was private so there where no salespersons disturbing while we where sunbathing and it was cleaned every day. Breakfast was nice with fresh fruits every day before the rest of the breakfast. After the breakfast we could choose our lunch and dinner from a new meny every day. Lunch and dinner was therefore fresh made and very tasteful. Afternoon tea with bisquits by the pool at 5 o'clock every day was allso very nice. The place was so romantic that i proposed to my girlfriend to marrie me! I got help from Paola to put together a nice surprise with a balcony full of flowers and a bottle of champagne for the proposal! Thank you a lot Paola. A most memorable stay.…
After just over a week in Dar es Salaam and on safari in Selous we wanted to end our 2 week holiday in Tanzania on the beach in Zanzibar. A friend recommended Sultan Palace. After an hour's drive from the airport we arrived at what could only be described as paradise! White sandy beaches, an infinity pool, brilliantly spacious and decorated bungalows with direct access onto the beach, and staff who were attentive to our every need. Nothing was too much for Paola and her team, including organising a trip to Stone Town with a guide. Our children, 9 & 8 loved every moment including the snorkelling. We stayed for 4 days and vowed to spread the word of this gem as widely as possible. A little known hotel but well worth a visit! We will be back.
Excellent owner and Manager Paola provided us with a great service. The stay was very nice and the rooms were perfect. Our only complain was that we were expecting to do some activities like diving, but they don´t offer any. Still, completely recommendable
This was our first holiday in over 4,1/2 years, further more we were holidaying with our 18 month year old daughter, (obviously her 1st traveling experience, and ours with a child). All these new stresses, worries and responsibilities of life were lifted from our minds immediately on our arrival at the Sultan Palace Hotel. As with everything in life it is more difficult to spot the good bits when done well, However we did think the following were note worthy. Very clean rooms every day. Water in fridge replaced, (to help with previous review) Good Air-con to help with sleeping etc With young daughter eating at funny times and with a more "basic" diet, Paola and her staff couldn't have been more accommodating, And whilst we were feeding little'n early at 6.00 the house keeping invisibly tended to turning down our beds and preparing the mosi nets early in our room. Paola recommended one of her staff should we require baby sitting, and for those nights that we had our dinner on our own veranda Paola arranged a very kind and personalized format for this part of the bill......So don't let all the talk of honey moons and couples put you off bringing a little one, just perhaps make contact in advance to confirm your requirements as we did. Really good structure to the hospitality, breakfast with a view from the hotel balcony, Lunch down on the beach, afternoon tea at 5/6pm at the pool, and dinner back in the main restaurant building. I've never been a beach holiday person, and our 8 nights just flew by. I merely repeat all of the other comments on here, by highlighting the owners hospitality. She was always tending to her guests ensuring that the staff were providing all that was required, and for us they always were. Paola is a remarkable women, and the kindest warmest host you could wish for. She is most amazing for having created such a hotel from the ground up over the last 20 years. Her attention to detail and sense of style are visible everywhere. The main hotel building was designed to reflect Swahili architecture, and offers a genuine Tanzanian feel, with its timber log structure reaching up some 30 meters above the dinning area. The 15 guest suites are all separate buildings suitably spaced and within easy access to the beach and the hotel, very boutique. You can tell that we were very taken by our holiday here and my wife and i are happy to admit our levels of pretension and expectations are very high. I don't think the photos on the website do the Sultan Palace Hotel Justice. I don't wish to sound like a salesman, however I'm a business owner myself, and like to shout loudly when i encounter somebody else doing a lot right!! Thank you so very much Paola…
